He entered after Kevin Lankinen was pulled early in the second period and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced.
How Meriläinen entered the game
Edmonton led 8–2 when Vancouver changed goalies. Lankinen had allowed eight goals on 20 shots before being pulled 8:23 into the second period. Meriläinen came on as a substitute, making this his first appearance for Vancouver rather than a start. He made 10 saves on 11 shots, according to the NHL game recap and CBS Sports’ published recap.
Why Vancouver made the change
Coach Manny Malhotra framed the substitution as a response to the chances Edmonton was generating and as a message to the team, not simply as blame directed at Lankinen. The NHL recap quoted him: “By no means are we blaming ‘Lanks,’” Malhotra said. “There were just far too many (Grade-A chances) in front of him and breakaway opportunities. It was more of a messaging to our group.”
Vancouver had claimed Meriläinen less than a week earlier
The Canucks announced on September 25, 2026, that they had claimed the 24-year-old goalie off waivers from the Ottawa Senators. The team’s transaction announcement listed his 2025–26 regular-season numbers as follows:

| Team | Record | Goals-against average | Save percentage | Shutouts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ottawa Senators (NHL) | 8–10–1 | 3.51 | .860 | not stated (Vancouver announcement, September 25, 2026) |
| Belleville (AHL) | 8–8–2 | 2.77 | .909 | 2 |
Those are historical figures reported in Vancouver’s September 25 announcement, not live statistics. Before his Canucks debut, the same announcement said Meriläinen had played 34 NHL games, all with Ottawa, with a 16–14–3 record, a 3.00 goals-against average, a .885 save percentage and three shutouts. It also listed 84 career AHL games with Belleville and Finland’s silver medal at the 2022 World Junior Hockey Championships.
What the debut does—and does not—show
Meriläinen delivered a strong relief line in a chaotic game, but one appearance does not establish a new order in Vancouver’s crease or indicate who will start next. The documented facts are that he entered with Edmonton far ahead, made 10 saves, and helped Vancouver through the remainder of a game that finished 9–7 after the Canucks’ late push.
