How to Run a Nonstop YouTube Livestream from an Ubuntu Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream continuously from Ubuntu by sending an encoder feed to YouTube Live Control Room. For a practical Linux setup, OBS can loop a local media file, but the documented OBS route is a desktop application—not a verified headless server daemon. A stream that stays open in the encoder is not automatically guaranteed to stay live: the server, source, network, encoder and YouTube ingest can all fail. This guide covers the supported setup, the settings to use, and what you need to plan before calling a stream “nonstop.”

Check YouTube Live eligibility first

Before installing an encoder, confirm that the channel can go live. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. Check the channel in YouTube Studio before building an unattended setup; resolving an eligibility issue can take longer than configuring Ubuntu.

Choose a server setup that matches how you will operate it

Ubuntu with a desktop environment and OBS

This is the most approachable path if you want OBS scenes and a graphical interface. OBS is officially distributed for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer through its PPA, according to the OBS Project’s Download page. Its documented Linux Media Source can play local video and audio files and has a Loop option. You will need a desktop session available to configure and operate OBS.

  1. On Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, install OBS using the commands shown by the OBS Project: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio, then sudo apt update, then sudo apt install obs-studio. Check the current OBS Download page before installing because supported Ubuntu versions can change.
  2. Launch OBS in the desktop session and create a scene for the stream.
  3. In the Sources panel, use + and choose Media Source. Select the local video file you have permission to stream and enable Loop in that source’s properties.
  4. Check the preview and confirm the source produces both the intended picture and audio. A loop only repeats a file; it does not recover a failed encoder, server or network connection.

Ubuntu Server without a desktop

Do not assume the OBS desktop application is a robust headless daemon just because it can be installed on Ubuntu. The official OBS material cited here does not establish a supported headless OBS recipe, a tested systemd unit, or guaranteed reconnect behavior. A command-line encoder may suit a genuinely headless server, but use a separately validated encoder and process-supervision recipe for your exact Ubuntu release, media format and hardware rather than copying an unverified command.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Whichever encoder you choose, treat “nonstop” as an operations goal, not a guarantee. Plan for process supervision, monitoring, a way to restore service after a fault, and a source that continues producing valid audio and video. Test the full recovery path before leaving the stream unattended.

Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live. Create or schedule the live event in Live Control Room.
  2. In the encoder settings shown for that event, copy the current stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL when available, and use the URL supplied by YouTube rather than substituting one from another event or guide.
  3. Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: it lets an encoder send video to the channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health before starting the event. For a planned launch, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
  5. For a first run, monitor the stream rather than assuming a successful preview means the entire unattended workflow is reliable. Test a controlled stop, restart and recovery procedure before relying on it for continuous operation.

Set video, audio and bitrate for YouTube

Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec. The recommendations vary by profile, so do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed between the encoder and YouTube’s ingest service.

Example H.264 profile YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps

These two rows are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have different rows in its settings guidance. Choose a profile your source and server can sustain, set CBR, and use the two-second keyframe interval where your encoder exposes that setting. Match the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to the profile you intend to send.

Make sure the server’s upload connection has headroom

YouTube says the stream’s bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. As a planning example, a 10 Mbps stream needs at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload if you reserve 20% of total capacity as headroom; an 8 Mbps stream needs 10 Mbps on the same basis. These are capacity calculations from the listed bitrates, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

  • Measure upload capacity from the server’s actual network location, not only from a different computer or a different time of day.
  • Test under representative network load. Shared connections can leave less capacity for the stream, and a network disruption can break it.
  • A wired Ethernet connection is a sensible way to connect a server to its router when available, but it cannot prevent an ISP, router or upstream outage.
  • If the host is a VPS or dedicated server, check its sustained outbound capacity, traffic policy, encoder hardware support, monitoring access and total cost before committing to continuous traffic.

Plan for interruptions and long-session archives

A continuous encoder process is only one part of continuity. Power loss, operating-system updates, a stopped encoder, an ended or unreadable source file, a failed network path or a YouTube ingest interruption can all interrupt the live feed. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing failover where applicable. A supervisor and restart policy can be part of an operational design, but the setup must be tested on your own host; the YouTube and OBS guidance covered here does not establish a particular systemd configuration or automatic recovery guarantee.

Do not assume that a single 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive for a longer, uninterrupted session. If keeping a recording matters, test the intended duration and your archive workflow separately.

Protect the content and channel

Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music, game footage, overlays and other people’s video. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules can affect a broadcast and its channel; a loop does not make content permissible or guarantee monetization. For game streams, check the game publisher’s streaming policy as well as the rights to any music or other material included in the feed. Review YouTube’s current rules before building a long-running stream around reused or third-party content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain an Ubuntu machine and encoder for an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo sends the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
