Use YouTube Studio to check whether monetization is eligible and enabled, then review Live Control Room settings and post-stream ad revenue in YouTube Analytics. These checks can show whether ads are configured and whether the stream generated ad revenue; they cannot prove that a particular viewer received an ad. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.
What you can—and cannot—verify
You can confirm that your channel is eligible for Watch Page ad revenue, that it has accepted YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module, and that monetization is turned on for the live stream. You can also inspect the selected mid-roll setting and, after the broadcast, review its ad revenue breakdown in Analytics.
None of those checks is a receipt for an individual viewer’s ad experience. YouTube decides whether an ad slot receives an ad, and not every viewer necessarily sees one. Its documentation does not describe a creator-side live indicator that confirms an ad was served to a specific viewer. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream and Tips on how ads work – Live.
Check eligibility and monetization settings
- Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, check that your channel can earn Watch Page ad revenue and has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube describes these as requirements for Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams. See Choose how you want to monetize.
- Open the active broadcast in Live Control Room. Inspect its Monetization setting and confirm it is On. When live-stream monetization is enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled.
- Check the mid-roll mode. The mode determines how breaks are placed, not whether an ad is guaranteed to run. The choices are automatic, scheduled, and manual; their differences are below.
- If using manual mid-rolls, verify insertion. A manual break must actually be inserted during the broadcast for a mid-roll opportunity to be created. An enabled monetization setting alone does not insert one.
For the current controls and details, see YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Choose a mid-roll mode that fits the stream
| Mode | How placement works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube recommends this mode and selects natural breakpoints. | Confirm automatic mid-rolls are selected. A selected mode does not guarantee ad delivery. |
| Scheduled | You can set intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Confirm the intended interval is selected. An interval creates opportunities, not guaranteed ads. |
| Manual | You choose when to insert breaks. | Confirm a break was sent during the stream; without an inserted break, there is no manual mid-roll opportunity. |
Ad delivery remains conditional in all three modes. YouTube’s help page describes the controls and notes that “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Source: YouTube Help, “Monetize your live stream.”
Monitor the stream, then check Analytics
While the stream is live
Use Live Control Room to inspect stream health and available real-time metrics. These help diagnose the broadcast path and stream performance. Healthy stream status does not confirm that an ad was served. YouTube’s instructions are in See your live stream’s metrics.

After the stream
In YouTube Analytics, review the live-stream ad revenue breakdown. Treat aggregate revenue reporting as evidence about monetization performance, not proof of what happened for each viewer. If the report is unavailable with a Live-only filter, follow the report’s filter guidance; a missing report under that filter is not, by itself, evidence of zero ad delivery. See Monetize your live stream and See your live stream’s metrics.
How to interpret an apparent lack of ads
- Monetization is off or eligibility is incomplete: recheck channel eligibility, module acceptance, and the stream’s Monetization setting.
- Manual mode is selected but no break was inserted: the setting does not create mid-rolls automatically; insert a break to make a mid-roll opportunity.
- A slot was created but no ad appeared: a slot is not a promise of an ad. YouTube selects whether slots receive ads, and availability can differ by viewer.
- Content or account restrictions apply: advertiser suitability and age restrictions can limit monetization or ad availability. Check the stream and channel status rather than treating an absent ad as a delivery-system failure.
- Stream health is good but ads are not evident: health describes the broadcast path, not ad delivery. Use Analytics for aggregate post-stream revenue, while keeping conclusions about individual viewers limited.
YouTube does not establish a deterministic creator-side test for whether a particular viewer received an ad. The most reliable diagnosis is therefore a sequence of separate checks—eligibility, settings, break insertion where relevant, stream health, and aggregate revenue—not a single live signal.
