To stream prerecorded videos in a chosen sequence as one YouTube live broadcast, run a playback-and-encoding process on a VPS, then send its continuous output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The VPS handles playback and upload; your home computer does not need to stay on. YouTube documents the encoder connection and output settings, but not a particular VPS playlist command or minimum server size, so those depend on the software and workload you choose.
Choose between a self-managed VPS and a cloud service
| Approach | What it does | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — first option for a managed YouTube loop | Upload videos, add your YouTube stream key once, and start a cloud-hosted stream that loops videos or playlists. | It runs without a computer at home, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60 fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card. See StreamNeo. |
| Self-managed VPS encoder | Store or access the files on a VPS and run software there to sequence and encode them for YouTube. | Sequence and transition control, encoding resources, sustained outbound bandwidth, storage and transfer costs, process supervision, restarts, and maintenance. YouTube does not state a minimum VPS size. |
| Another hosted prerecorded-video service | YouTube’s verified-encoder list includes Gyre and describes it as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. | Check the provider’s current scheduling and sequencing features, quality limits, recovery behavior, archive handling, price, and account portability before choosing; those details are not established here. |
Regardless of which approach you use, the encoder output reaches YouTube through its Live Control Room stream URL and key. A VPS gives you control over your own sequencing process; a hosted service avoids managing that process yourself. No comparative cost or reliability figures are established for VPS hosting and hosted services.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days.
- Allow for activation time if this is the channel’s first live stream: YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the live stream you intend to use. For a scheduled broadcast, set up the event before connecting the encoder so you can check its preview before starting the event.
Eligibility and activation are YouTube account requirements, not VPS settings. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Prepare the video sequence on the VPS
Organize the source files
Put the videos in the order you want them played and decide what should happen at the end of the sequence: stop, restart from the first file, or continue with a longer playlist. The playback software must be configured to produce a continuous output across file boundaries. The exact playlist mechanism depends on the encoder or media software you select; YouTube’s documentation covers ingest and stream settings, not a VPS-side playlist recipe.

Validate the sequence before automating it
- Use representative files, including the formats, resolutions, frame rates, and audio characteristics you expect to stream.
- Check that playback advances to the next file as intended and that transitions do not create an unwanted gap, black frame, or audio interruption.
- Decide how the process should respond if a file is missing, unreadable, or ends unexpectedly. Verify that the sequence does not stall at that point.
- Test the playlist and encoder together on the intended VPS. The required CPU, memory, and storage depend on the chosen software, source media, output settings, and whether encoding is performed in real time; YouTube does not publish a minimum VPS specification for this workflow.
Connect the VPS encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select your stream. Copy the server or ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter the ingest URL and key in the VPS encoder’s streaming destination fields. Select RTMPS if the encoder offers it; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration with the replacement.
- Start the encoder so it sends video to YouTube, then check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, wait until the preview appears and choose Go live when you are ready to begin the broadcast.
- Confirm the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if you use them. They affect whether the event starts or stops in response to the encoder; do not assume that stopping the VPS process always ends the live event in the way you expect.
YouTube describes the connection sequence in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
Set output quality, keyframes, and bandwidth
Match encoder output to YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as the output target rather than assuming the source files are already suitable. Its general guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds.

Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; there is no single correct value for every stream. For example, YouTube lists 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate and 6 Mbps as the maximum for 720p at 30 fps. Use the relevant row in YouTube’s settings guidance for your chosen output.
Check sustained outbound capacity
The VPS must sustain enough upload bandwidth to send the encoded stream continuously. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom and measuring outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. A speed test or provider headline rate is not a guarantee that the VPS can sustain the target bitrate under your actual conditions. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.

Test and monitor the broadcast
- Run a test with a representative sequence before relying on the stream for a long broadcast.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, and correct playback order before going live.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast. If YouTube reports connection or quality problems, check the encoder output and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity against the selected bitrate.
- After changing files, encoder settings, or the playlist process, repeat the test; a change can affect continuity even if the YouTube connection settings are unchanged.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring quality during the stream. Its encoder documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that longer 24/7 sessions will be saved as one complete archive. Plan around that stated limit and check YouTube’s current behavior before depending on an archive of a longer session.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Encoder destination, stream URL, key, or encoder output. | Confirm the encoder is sending to the selected stream’s ingest URL and that the key matches. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Stream health reports a connection or quality problem | Output bitrate or sustained VPS outbound bandwidth. | Check outbound capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate. |
| The stream starts but stops at a file boundary | Playlist or playback process behavior. | Test the sequence outside the live event, including the transition at the failing boundary. Verify that the process is configured to advance or loop as intended. |
| Picture or audio is missing or inconsistent | Source-file compatibility or encoder output configuration. | Test a representative file and check that the output uses supported video and audio codecs. Inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| A scheduled event is not live after the encoder connects | Scheduled-event workflow or auto-start configuration. | Wait for the preview, then select Go live for a scheduled broadcast. Review auto-start and auto-stop settings if you expect the encoder to control event start or stop. |
