For prerecorded video, an OBS Media Source can loop a local file. This setup can run without a home computer, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted encoding, network access, or automatic recovery: test the VPS’s resources, connection, and restart behavior before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, and the minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before setup.
- A Windows VPS with remote access and enough actual CPU, GPU or virtual-encoder capacity and sustained outbound network capacity for your chosen stream.
- OBS Studio installed on that VPS, a prepared scene, and a YouTube stream URL and key.
- A media file stored on the VPS if you are streaming prerecorded video. A local file on your home PC will not be available to OBS on the remote machine unless you transfer it or provide another accessible storage path.
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic system requirements, but meeting those requirements does not mean a system can handle every stream. Encoding load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A VPS may expose virtual graphics hardware differently from a physical PC, so check the provider’s current specifications and test the exact configuration you plan to use. OBS’s system requirements explain the baseline and its limits.
Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
1. Create a scene and add the video
- Install and open OBS Studio on the VPS.
- In the Scenes panel, create a scene for the broadcast. Add a source for the content you want to show.
- For a prerecorded file, add a Media Source, select the file stored on the VPS, and enable Loop if it should repeat. OBS supports common audio and video formats; review its Media Sources guide for source options.
- Preview the scene and confirm that both video and audio work. Check the transition between the end and beginning of the file; a loop setting does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio join.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers scene setup and testing. If the scene includes overlays or multiple sources, test their behavior over an entire loop rather than only checking the opening frame.
2. Set the stream destination and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a livestream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open the stream settings, select YouTube or a custom server as appropriate, and enter the URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start streaming from OBS and check Live Control Room. Depending on the stream setup, you may still need to click Go live in YouTube Studio after the encoder signal arrives; do not assume the incoming signal automatically publishes the broadcast.

Choose settings that the VPS can sustain
There is no single safe bitrate or resolution for every Windows VPS. The right settings depend on the available upload capacity, resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder, and scene workload. Choose a quality that the connection can sustain, then test with representative audio and motion. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while testing and during the broadcast. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable, properly configured input from your VPS.
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for codec, bitrate, resolution, and keyframe interval in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Apply them in OBS’s output and video settings, then run a private or otherwise suitable test before switching to a public broadcast. Avoid choosing the highest resolution simply because it appears in the menu: verify that the VPS encoder can maintain it without dropped frames or an unstable connection.

Software or hardware encoding?
Software encoding uses CPU resources; hardware encoding can offload some work to a GPU component. On a VPS, hardware encoding is only an option if the virtual machine actually exposes a supported encoder, and the resulting quality and performance depend on the hardware and encoder generation. Check what the provider supplies and compare the options under the real scene and output settings. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide; do not assume a VPS has the same encoder access as a desktop graphics card.
Start OBS automatically after a planned restart
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can start an already-configured OBS instance and begin streaming, but it does not configure Windows sign-in, ensure the VPS has network access at launch, or guarantee recovery from every failure. Treat automation as a controlled start mechanism, then test the full boot and reconnect sequence on the chosen VPS.

- Configure and save the OBS profile, scene collection, stream destination, and output settings while logged in to the VPS.
- Use Windows Task Scheduler or another Windows launch mechanism to start OBS with the
--startstreamingparameter after the required sign-in and startup conditions are met. - For a scheduled OBS task, set its working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies in its Launch Parameters documentation. - Restart the VPS deliberately and verify that Windows reaches the state your task requires, OBS opens the intended profile, the encoder signal reaches YouTube, and the broadcast is actually live in Live Control Room.
- Test what happens if the VPS loses its connection or OBS closes. Confirm how you will notice and recover from those cases; the launch parameter alone is not a complete monitoring or recovery system.
Windows startup, scheduled-task behavior, VPS maintenance, and network availability vary by configuration and provider. OBS’s overview guide explains its general operation, but the VPS-specific boot and restart behavior must be validated on the machine you use.
Plan for YouTube archives and livestream rules
A continuous stream does not necessarily become one indefinitely archived video. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The official guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams that last 12 hours or more. If replayable archives matter, plan regular stops and restarts under that duration and confirm the resulting videos in YouTube Studio. See the YouTube encoder guide.

Before leaving a broadcast unattended, make sure the material and any music, footage, or other content you use comply with YouTube’s current policies and rights requirements. A VPS and an encoder do not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content, and continuous or repetitive presentation does not guarantee monetization.
