First enable live streaming on your channel, then create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, configure and test OBS, and monitor the stream. Decide early whether you need one uninterrupted live URL or reliable YouTube archives: a 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold and may not be captured.
Before you begin: choose the kind of kirtan stream
The setup depends on whether you are broadcasting a live performance or playing prerecorded material. For a live performance, OBS needs the appropriate camera and audio inputs. For prerecorded kirtan, use a media source and visuals you are authorized to broadcast. Either way, test the specific sources and your OBS version before relying on them unattended; source behavior should not be assumed to loop or recover indefinitely.
- One continuous broadcast: keeps a single live URL available, but requires the local encoder and its power and network to stay available. A broadcast lasting 24 hours exceeds YouTube’s archive window.
- Shorter, separate broadcasts: can provide separate YouTube archives and create natural points for monitoring, but require more operational handling and may interrupt continuity for viewers.
If preserving the full program matters, plan a separate local recording or record and upload content independently. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; check rights for both the live stream and any later upload.
Check channel eligibility and enable YouTube Live
- Verify the YouTube channel and confirm that it has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days.
- Enable live streaming before the planned launch. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until launch day.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, description, and privacy.
- Choose whether to reuse stream settings. If you want a reusable credential, YouTube supports creating a custom stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with unauthorized people.

Build and configure the OBS scene
For prerecorded kirtan
Create a scene in OBS and add a media source for the recording, plus any authorized still image, video, or other visual. Confirm that audio is routed to the stream and is audible in the OBS mixer without clipping. Test how the media source behaves when it reaches the end, when OBS is restarted, and after a connection interruption. Do not rely on an untested loop setting as a guarantee of unattended operation.
For a live performance
Add the camera or other video capture source and the intended microphone or audio input. Check framing, lighting, audio levels, and synchronization in a private or otherwise appropriate test. A prerecorded setup may not need a microphone or mixer; use only equipment that suits the performance.

Set the encoder for the actual upload connection
In OBS, configure the stream output to a bitrate and resolution your sustained upload can support. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps; that is a resolution- and codec-specific recommendation, not a universal setting. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports up to 60 fps and lists supported codecs including H.264. Check the current YouTube recommended encoder settings for the full resolution and codec table.
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point if you are unsure, then run a representative test with the intended audio and motion. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health rather than assuming a setting will work on every connection.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and note the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, or use the provided server URL and stream key. Use RTMPS where available.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview, then check video, audio, and stream health.
- When the preview is correct, start or schedule the broadcast through the YouTube workflow shown for that stream. Keep the Live Control Room open to monitor warnings and health.
- After a test, end the broadcast and check the archive outcome in YouTube Studio before depending on it for replay.

Plan for continuous operation and archives
A 24/7 OBS stream depends on the computer, OBS, source media, local power, and internet connection continuing to work. Decide who will monitor it and how you will respond to a frozen source, dropped connection, power loss, or encoder failure. A UPS may bridge some local power interruptions, but it will not protect against network, computer, encoder, or platform failures. Choose one for the actual equipment load and required runtime; no particular model or runtime is established here.

YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends a local archive backup. That makes a single 24/7 broadcast an unreliable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If a channel archive matters, use shorter broadcasts or record locally and upload separately. The Google production guide states that streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived, but the current Help guidance still does not make a longer continuous stream a dependable archive strategy. YouTube’s live Content ID matching is a restricted rights-management feature for eligible Content Manager partners, not a creator’s license-checking shortcut. The matching documentation requires global rights and exclusive ownership for that specific use; matches can result in warnings, replacement of the stream, or termination. Troubleshoot common OBS and YouTube problems
