Your home computer can stay off. The important limitation: a YouTube playlist page is not itself an encoder input in YouTube’s documented setup. You need authorized source media that your chosen encoder can read.
How the setup works—and what “playlist” means
The EC2 instance takes the place of a computer running an encoder at home. The encoder reads media available to the instance and sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s setup guide describes connecting an encoder with the stream URL and key; it does not describe entering a YouTube playlist page as the video source. A playlist of videos on YouTube and a playlist of source files available to your encoder are different things.
Use recordings you own or are authorized to broadcast, in a format supported by your chosen encoder. Do not download or rebroadcast other creators’ videos without permission. A live stream can still raise copyright concerns, and YouTube’s reused-content policies are separate from whether a stream technically works.

Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube Help says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and that streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Confirm access before building the server workflow, then create or schedule the event in Live Control Room.

Choose the region and estimate the workload
In the AWS console, choose the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, code ap-south-1, when launching the EC2 instance. There is no defensible universal instance size for this job: resource needs depend on the encoder, whether it transcodes or simply sends media, the output resolution and frame rate, and other work on the instance. Start with a controlled test and observe CPU and memory use rather than assuming a particular size will handle continuous streaming.
Plan secure remote access
AWS documents EC2 Instance Connect and SSH, each with its own IAM and network prerequisites. Follow the requirements for the access method you choose. If using SSH, restrict inbound access to the source addresses that need it; do not leave remote access broadly open. Keep the YouTube stream key private: do not put it in screenshots, public repositories, shared shell history, or tutorial examples.

Set up the stream step by step
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and locate its encoder settings. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password and use the stream-specific key intended for this event or channel.
- Launch and access the EC2 instance. Select Linux and the Mumbai region (
ap-south-1). Connect using an AWS-supported method after satisfying its IAM and network prerequisites. Choose an instance based on your test workload; the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed size. - Make authorized media available to the encoder. Put the source recordings somewhere the instance can access, and configure the encoder to read those files or a playlist of files. Do not substitute a YouTube playlist URL unless the encoder’s documentation explicitly supports that input and you have rights to use the content. YouTube’s documented encoder connection alone does not provide a method for ingesting a playlist page.
- Configure encoder output. Set the destination to YouTube’s server URL and supply the stream key. Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it. Use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and sets four seconds as the maximum.
- Choose the bitrate for the actual output. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. Consult its current settings table for the exact combination you intend to send rather than reusing a number from a different format. Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the media and the quality you can sustain.
- Test before going unattended. Start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and verify both picture and audio. YouTube recommends configuring in advance, previewing before going live, testing the setup, and monitoring stream quality. Run the test long enough to observe resource use and stability before relying on it continuously.
- Add operations deliberately. Process supervision, restart behavior, logs, and alerts can help manage a remote encoder, but they are implementation choices—not guarantees provided by YouTube or AWS. Test what happens after an encoder exit, a network interruption, and an instance restart before treating the workflow as unattended.
Estimate AWS costs for your configuration
AWS EC2 pricing is not a single fixed monthly price for this use. The estimate depends on instance type and runtime, storage, outbound data transfer, and any other services selected. Use the AWS pricing page or calculator for the actual configuration and date you plan to run it; the available pricing information does not support a universal all-in monthly figure.
Also consider the operating cost in time: you maintain the Linux environment, encoder configuration, media access, monitoring, and recovery process. EC2 gives you control over the server environment, but the end-to-end workflow remains your responsibility.

Troubleshooting a remote stream
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder uses the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that the event is ready, and that the instance can reach the ingest endpoint. Re-enter the key privately if needed; never paste it into a public log or screenshot.
- The event is not available for streaming: Check channel verification, live-stream enablement, age eligibility, and any live-stream restrictions. If this is the first enablement, YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder cannot open the source: Confirm the media is present and readable on the instance and supported by the encoder. A playlist page on YouTube is not a substitute for accessible source media in the documented encoder workflow.
- The stream buffers or quality is unstable: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the exact resolution and frame rate. Check instance load and network behavior; lower the output settings if the test shows the current configuration is not sustainable.
- Video looks poor or motion stutters: Confirm the encoder is using the intended resolution and frame rate, H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Verify the chosen settings in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Check that the encoder is sending an audio track and that its format is AAC or MP3 as supported in YouTube’s guidance. Listen to the preview rather than relying only on encoder status.
- The process stops when you disconnect: Check whether the encoder was started in a session that ended with your remote connection. Configure and test an appropriate process-management approach, logs, and alerts; automatic recovery is not guaranteed by the basic EC2 or YouTube setup.
