Run your encoder on the remote Linux server inside a named tmux session. Start the stream there, detach with Ctrl+b followed by d, and then close SSH; the encoder continues running in that remote session. Reconnect to the same host and account later and reattach to check its terminal. This protects against an SSH disconnect, not an encoder crash or server reboot.
Keep the encoder running with tmux
tmux keeps a terminal session on the remote host after your SSH client disconnects. The encoder must run inside that remote session: starting tmux only on your laptop will not protect a process running on the server. The tmux manual documents sessions that survive accidental SSH disconnection and can be reattached later: tmux Getting Started.
Start or reconnect to a named session

SSH into the Linux machine that will send the stream to YouTube.

tmux new-session -A -s youtube-live -
If this attaches to an existing session, inspect the terminal before typing. It may already contain a running encoder or another command; blindly entering commands could affect the wrong process.
Start the encoder and confirm the stream
Run your already-configured encoder from the tmux shell. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the stream, and configure the encoder with those values. YouTube’s instructions for encoder setup are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, paste it into a public log, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
Wait until the encoder is sending media and Live Control Room shows the expected incoming preview or status. A tmux session merely shows that a terminal exists; it does not prove the encoder is transmitting or that YouTube has started the broadcast.
Detach without stopping the encoder

Press Ctrl+b, release both keys, then press d. This detaches you from tmux and returns you to the SSH shell while leaving the session on the server.

You can now exit SSH or close the local terminal. Avoid typing a command that stops the encoder before detaching.
Reconnect and reattach
SSH back into the same host as the same user, then list sessions:
tmux list-sessions
Attach to the named session:
tmux attach-session -t youtube-live
You should return to the encoder’s terminal and be able to inspect its output. If youtube-live is missing, first confirm that you used the same hostname and account. Also check whether the host applies logout policies that terminate user processes. A missing session can mean the server restarted or the process/session ended; tmux does not preserve it through those events.
What tmux does—and does not—protect against
Detaching from tmux handles loss of the SSH connection while the remote host and session remain alive. It is not a service supervisor. It does not automatically restart an encoder that exits, guarantee recovery after a server reboot or termination, or keep a process alive if host policy kills it.

YouTube receives media from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance says that stopping content transmission from the encoder ends the stream; it also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a promise that an encoder will remain healthy for 12 hours. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Choose a persistence method for the failure you expect

A project example shows FFmpeg managed by systemd for unattended YouTube streaming: FFmpeg/systemd implementation example. Treat it as an implementation to inspect, not a guarantee about every Linux host. Configure and test the service’s restart policy, startup behavior, logs, and monitoring on the machine you actually use. If your only concern is closing SSH, tmux is the simpler fit; if you need recovery after process failure or reboot, investigate a service manager rather than assuming tmux covers it.
Use RTMPS when supported
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and instructs creators to retrieve the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. Google’s developer guidance specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid ingestion endpoint, port 443, and the hostname used for SNI authentication. Configure the exact endpoint YouTube provides rather than guessing or substituting a URL: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and YouTube Live streaming protocols.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops or disappears

SSH closed and the encoder stopped: It may have been started outside tmux, or tmux may have been running on your local machine instead of the server. Reconnect, start tmux on the remote host, and launch the encoder inside it.

The tmux session is missing: Check the hostname and account, then consider a host reboot, process/session termination, or logout policy. tmux does not restore a session after those events.

The session exists but YouTube shows no incoming video: Inspect encoder output, confirm that it is still transmitting, and verify the stream URL and key against Live Control Room. Do not conclude the stream is live just because the tmux session remains.

The encoder exited while tmux remains: tmux preserves the terminal, not the process. Review the encoder’s output to find the failure; if automatic restart is needed, configure and validate a service manager such as systemd.

The stream key may be exposed: Keep it out of public logs and shared terminals. Use the key and endpoint supplied for the intended YouTube stream, and replace the key through YouTube if it has been disclosed.
