How to Set Resolution and Bitrate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream From a Server

Set a server stream’s resolution and bitrate to match YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, then check encoder settings, upload headroom, and local recording needs for a 24/7 broadcast.

Set your server’s stream to a resolution and frame rate it can encode steadily, then choose the matching bitrate for the codec you send to YouTube. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, RTMPS when available, and enough sustained outbound bandwidth to leave 20% headroom. For a 24/7 broadcast, keep a local recording if you need a complete archive: YouTube warns streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.

Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Match the bitrate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec actually sent by your encoder. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrates, not guarantees of visual quality. They apply to the incoming live stream, not uploaded video files. Source: YouTube encoder settings.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 / H.265 recommendation H.264 recommendation
360p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube also publishes minimum ingest bitrates. For H.264, the minimums for 720p30, 720p60, 1080p30, and 1080p60 are 3, 3, 5, and 6 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265, those minimums are 2, 2, 4, and 4 Mbps. These are minimums, not the recommended targets in the table.

Practical starting points

  • Use H.264 at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps when 30 fps is adequate and the server and connection can sustain it.
  • Use H.264 at 1080p60 and 17 Mbps when smoother motion matters and your server can encode at that rate reliably.
  • Use H.264 at 720p30 and 8 Mbps for a lower-bandwidth option from YouTube’s recommended settings.

These are starting points, not universal quality prescriptions. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings enabled. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Configure the server encoder

  1. Choose the output codec. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, as well as RTMP and RTMPS transport. Select the matching bitrate column above.
  2. Set rate control to CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest.
  3. Set keyframes to every two seconds. Do not use an interval longer than four seconds.
  4. Use RTMPS if supported. Retrieve the RTMPS server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, then enter them in the encoder configuration. RTMPS wraps RTMP in TLS/SSL encryption. Keep the stream key private; do not expose it in scripts, logs, or screenshots. Details: YouTube RTMPS guidance and YouTube live-stream setup.
  5. Set audio appropriately. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; for stereo, its recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.

For SDR, YouTube’s advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC entropy coding, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. Use the settings your encoder exposes and verify the resulting stream in YouTube’s preview.

Check outbound bandwidth and server capacity

Plan around sustained outbound upload bandwidth, not the server’s download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and counting both primary and backup streams in the total. Applying that margin, one 14 Mbps stream needs about 17.5 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity; one 17 Mbps stream needs about 21.25 Mbps. These are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not separate published YouTube thresholds. If you send a backup stream, add its bitrate before calculating capacity. • Run an upload test from the server’s actual network path; a provider’s advertised or download speed alone does not confirm usable outbound capacity.
  • Confirm that the server’s CPU or GPU and encoder can sustain the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s bitrate table does not specify hardware requirements.
  • Test the configuration in a broadcast before relying on it. A bitrate recommendation alone does not prove that a specific server or connection will remain stable.

Test the continuous broadcast before relying on it

YouTube’s guidance recommends preparing the encoder ahead of time and checking the Live Control Room preview. For a server deployment, verify the complete path: encoder output, network, YouTube ingest, and any local recording.

  1. Start a test broadcast and confirm the preview shows the intended picture and audio.
  2. Monitor stream health while the server sends at the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  3. Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, then confirm what viewers and the backup path experience.
  4. Check that local archive files are being created and growing if you need a recording.

These checks are based on YouTube’s operational tips: encoder guidance.

Plan for the archive and DVR limits

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining the complete 24/7 broadcast matters, record locally and do not promise viewers a complete YouTube replay or unrestricted rewind. Sources: YouTube live-stream archiving and YouTube DVR guidance.

The cited guidance does not establish that one live event or stream key can operate continuously without interruption. Treat nonstop operation as something to validate in your specific setup, not a guarantee.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: Check sustained outbound capacity and leave the recommended 20% margin. Reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot support the current configuration.
  • The stream looks poor despite meeting the table value: Confirm that the encoder is sending the codec and resolution you intended. The recommendations are targets, not guaranteed visual outcomes; test a different supported resolution or frame rate against the actual content and server.
  • The stream drops under load: Check server CPU/GPU utilization and encoder health, then test again at a setting the server can sustain. The YouTube table does not certify a particular server specification.
  • The stream key or ingest connection fails: Confirm the server URL and key from Live Control Room and that the encoder is configured for the intended transport. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording when full retention is necessary.
  • Viewers cannot rewind the full broadcast: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; do not treat it as a substitute for local recording.
