Automatic placement does not guarantee that an ad will be served to every viewer—or at every opportunity.
How automatic ads work on a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s automatic setting lets its system choose mid-roll opportunities at natural breakpoints. Once enabled, it does not require someone to stay at the controls and insert each break. This makes it suitable for a continuously running stream, subject to the channel’s monetization eligibility and the stream’s content suitability.
An ad opportunity is not the same as an ad impression: YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Delivery can depend on factors including the slot, advertiser demand and viewer experience. A viewer who is not served an ad continues watching; a viewer who sees one returns to the live stream when the ad ends or is skipped.
Choose an ad-break mode

YouTube’s earnings guidance is platform guidance, not a forecast for a particular channel. Whichever mode you choose, enabling a break creates an opportunity; it does not ensure that an ad will play.

Turn on automatic mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and start or schedule the live stream.
- In the Live Control Room, open Edit → Monetization.
- Turn monetization on for the stream, then choose Automatic mid-rolls. Select low, medium or high frequency if those controls are available in your interface.
- Review the live monetization controls before going live. YouTube may change labels or availability, so follow the current options shown in your Live Control Room.
For eligible monetized channels without rights management, YouTube also provides channel-level defaults for future live streams. When monetization is on, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled; mid-rolls can be set to automatic, scheduled or manual.
Eligibility and situations that can limit ads
- Your channel must be eligible for monetization, and you must accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams viewed on the Watch Page or embedded through the YouTube player.
- Age restriction and advertiser-friendly content rules can limit or prevent monetization.
- YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with autoplay.
- Automatic placement does not mean every viewer receives an ad. YouTube’s systems consider factors such as the slot, advertiser demand and viewer experience.
Reduce disruption without switching to manual breaks
YouTube describes several controls in automatic mode intended to reduce disruption: mid-rolls are limited for channel members, temporarily paused for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats or Stickers, and snoozed for all viewers during high-engagement moments.

The Live Control Room’s Delay ads control postpones automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. Manually placed mid-rolls may still display during that delay, so it is not a blanket block on every type of break.
What YouTube reports about automatic mid-rolls
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. The January 2024 comparison was averaged across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s reported group comparison, not a promised result for an individual channel.
