You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from an Indian cloud VM by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, running FFmpeg on the VM at real-time speed, and checking YouTube’s preview and stream health before you make the stream public. First confirm the channel is eligible and that you have the rights to stream the video and audio. A VM does not bypass YouTube’s live-streaming rules.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; age and other policy conditions also apply.
- A video and audio track you have the necessary rights to stream and archive. YouTube’s terms require content providers to have the rights needed for Live Content on Google services, including relevant music rights, and to comply with applicable law and the Community Guidelines.
- An India-region VM with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your selected stream quality, plus CPU capacity if FFmpeg will encode in software.
- FFmpeg installed on the VM, the source media file, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Do not treat a successful upload or an available VM as permission to rebroadcast a song, game soundtrack, broadcast, or other creator’s material. A rights issue can affect the live stream and its archive.
1. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and configure its title, visibility, and other stream details.
- Choose the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the key as the connection value that tells YouTube which encoder feed to accept.
- Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or repository. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
- Use the stream URL and key in FFmpeg’s output destination as described below. Leave the stream in preview mode until YouTube confirms it is receiving the feed.
Prefer RTMPS when supported by your encoder and the ingest URL YouTube provides; YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension of RTMP.
2. Prepare FFmpeg to loop the video
FFmpeg’s main manual documents -re for reading input at its native frame rate, which is useful when packet timing matters for live output. Its loop filter documentation defines loop=-1 as infinite looping. These are building blocks, not a universal command guaranteed to fit every source file or ingest configuration.

Check the source file
- Confirm the file has the video and audio you intend to stream. A video-only source may need an audio input or a deliberate silent-audio track, depending on the chosen output settings.
- Inspect its resolution, frame rate, codecs, and audio duration. Mismatched audio and video lengths, unsupported codecs, or a visible pause at the loop seam may require file-specific preparation.
- Make sure the VM has enough disk space for the media and that FFmpeg can read it continuously. Keep the source somewhere persistent rather than relying on temporary storage.
Build and test the output command
Use FFmpeg’s input, filter, encoding, and output options in the documented order: inputs and their options first, then output options and the destination. Apply the loop filter to the video input, use real-time input pacing where appropriate, and set the output to match YouTube’s supported encoder settings. Insert the stream URL and key from your own Live Control Room; do not copy credentials from an example found online.
Because the right filter graph and audio handling depend on the media, test the actual file before relying on it. Start an unlisted stream, confirm that the preview shows moving video and expected audio, and observe it through at least one loop transition. YouTube’s live encoder settings advise testing with representative motion and audio rather than assuming a static sample is sufficient.

3. Match YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the settings to the selected resolution and frame rate and to the VM’s reliable outbound capacity.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: use YouTube’s published bitrate table for the exact resolution and frame rate you choose. A bitrate suitable for one output is not automatically suitable for another.
- Quality: select a resolution and frame rate the VM can sustain without saturating its outbound network. Test the full combination, including audio.
- Ingest: choose the stream URL and protocol shown for your stream, using RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages during the test. If the feed is unstable, reduce the output bitrate or quality and test again rather than assuming the VM’s advertised bandwidth is continuously available.

4. Run the encoder reliably on the VM
A live stream depends on a process that stays running and an outbound connection that remains usable. Start FFmpeg in a persistent service or process manager appropriate to the VM’s operating system, so a disconnected SSH session does not inadvertently stop it. Configure the service to restart after a process failure, and keep its logs available for diagnosis. Exact service commands depend on the VM’s operating system and init system.
Before leaving the stream unattended, verify that it survives a normal disconnect from your administration session, that a reboot brings the encoder back if that is part of your plan, and that the stream key remains protected. A process restart does not guarantee that YouTube will accept the reconnect or that the media resumes at the desired point; check the Live Control Room after any restart.

5. Choose an India-region VM based on total streaming cost
The VM provider is a separate infrastructure choice; no particular Indian provider or current plan price is established here. Check the provider’s current terms before buying, especially for continuous outbound use.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| India-region availability | Confirm the region is actually available for the plan you intend to use. |
| Sustained outbound bandwidth and transfer allowance | A continuous live feed sends data for as long as it runs. Calculate expected transfer from your chosen bitrate and duration, then verify the provider’s allowance and billing method. |
| CPU capacity | If FFmpeg encodes in software rather than passing through an already suitable stream, encoding can require substantial CPU headroom. Test the actual resolution and frame rate. |
| Uptime and support | Consider how quickly you can diagnose a failed VM or network connection and what support is available. |
| Complete cost | Include the VM, storage, outbound data charges, and any additional costs that apply to continuous operation. |
For a rough transfer calculation, convert the video bitrate from megabits per second to megabytes per second by dividing by eight, then multiply by stream duration in seconds. Add audio bitrate and allow for protocol overhead; the provider’s billing rules determine the final chargeable amount. Confirm its current egress terms rather than treating a VM’s headline network speed as a transfer allowance.

6. Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube receives no video
- Check that FFmpeg is running and its logs show no input or output error.
- Recheck the stream URL and key for the correct Live Control Room event. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Confirm the firewall and provider network permit outbound traffic to the selected ingest endpoint.
The preview appears, then buffers or reports poor health
- Check outbound capacity and transfer limits, then compare the actual output bitrate with the provider’s sustained network terms.
- Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and repeat the unlisted test. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the revised output.
- If encoding on the CPU, check whether the VM can sustain the chosen settings without maxing out.
The stream has no audio or audio ends before video
- Check that the source contains the intended audio track and that FFmpeg maps it to the output.
- Inspect the audio duration and encoding settings. A video-only file or mismatched track lengths needs media-specific handling.
- Test the sound in YouTube’s preview before making the stream public.
The video stops at the end instead of looping
- Confirm the video loop filter is applied to the intended input and uses the documented infinite value,
-1. - Review FFmpeg’s output for filter errors and verify that the process is not exiting when the source reaches its end.
- Observe a complete loop during an unlisted test; source files can have a pause or discontinuity at the join even when looping works.
The stream does not recover after a disconnect
- Check whether FFmpeg exited, whether the VM lost network access, or whether YouTube stopped accepting the connection.
- Review service-manager and FFmpeg logs, then restart the process and confirm the preview returns in the Live Control Room.
- Do not assume that process auto-restart alone guarantees a successful YouTube reconnect.
