The tmux server keeps the session’s programs running when your SSH terminal disconnects. Later, SSH back into the same VPS and user account, then reattach to the session.
This protects a running process from an ordinary terminal disconnect; it does not restart a crashed encoder, survive a VPS reboot, or restore a failed connection to YouTube.
Start the stream inside tmux on the VPS

SSH into the VPS where the encoder will run. Start or attach to a named session from that remote shell:
tmux new-session -A -s ytstreamThe
-Aoption attaches to the named session if it already exists, or creates it if it does not. Running tmux locally and then opening SSH inside it is not equivalent: the encoder must be managed by tmux running on the VPS.The Tool Desk

In the tmux window, run your YouTube encoder command. There is no universal command to copy here: it depends on your source media, installed encoder, VPS environment, and YouTube ingest settings. Keep the encoder’s output visible so you can check for errors.

When the stream is running, detach from tmux by pressing Ctrl+b, releasing both keys, then pressing d. This exits the tmux client but leaves the session and its programs running in the background. Do not type
exitin the pane if your intent is to leave the shell and encoder running.
As the tmux project’s Getting Started documentation explains, detaching closes the client connection to the outside terminal while leaving the session’s programs running in the background.
Reconnect and reattach

SSH back into the same VPS with the same user account.

List sessions to check whether the named session is still present:

tmux list-sessions -
Reattach to it:
tmux attach-session -t ytstreamYou should see the session’s terminal, including the encoder output if it is still running. Reattaching confirms access to the tmux session; it does not confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings
A persistent terminal is only one part of a working live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and read any warnings, and inspect the encoder output in tmux. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream before going live, monitoring stream health during the event, and allowing about 20% additional upload bandwidth headroom. A network disruption can interrupt delivery even while tmux and the encoder remain active. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Choose settings for the actual stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table rather than treating one value as universal. For example, YouTube lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 720p at 30 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your VPS or network route can sustain them.

If this is your first live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. The encoder setup flow uses the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it private, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. YouTube says a custom stream key can be reused. What tmux will—and will not—keep running
tmux separates the terminal client from the programs in its session. Closing or losing the SSH terminal normally detaches your view; it does not itself stop the session’s programs. But tmux is not a process supervisor or stream-recovery service.

Ordinary SSH disconnect: the session normally stays alive, and you can reattach later.

Encoder crash: tmux does not restart it. You need a separate supervision or restart strategy if automatic recovery is required.

VPS reboot or tmux server shutdown: the session and its running programs do not survive. Configure appropriate service supervision and startup behavior if recovery after a reboot matters.

Network or YouTube ingest failure: tmux may still show a running encoder process, but it does not repair the connection or prove that viewers are receiving the stream.
Also check for host-specific logout policies or tmux configuration that changes the default behavior. In particular, the tmux remote-session guide notes that an enabled exit-unattached option can make the server exit when its last client detaches.

Troubleshoot a missing session or offline stream

Keep copyright and channel rules in view
A persistent stream is not permission to broadcast its contents. Use video and audio you have rights to stream, and check YouTube’s policies for your content and channel. YouTube’s live-stream checks and continued stream health are separate from whether tmux keeps the encoder process open.
