Yes: you can run OBS on a remote Linux server and send its output to YouTube over RTMPS. The server must provide the graphics/display environment OBS needs, enough sustained encoding capacity for your chosen scenes and settings, and reliable network egress. A continuously running OBS process does not guarantee YouTube will preserve one replay archive: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Before you begin: confirm YouTube live access
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room before configuring OBS. YouTube’s setup guidance explains the eligibility requirements and workflow: Get started with live streaming.
Choose a remote host that can actually run OBS
A VPS or dedicated server is a hosting option, not proof that OBS will work well on it. OBS’s published Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and an X window system or Wayland. OBS also cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record a particular workload. Encoding method, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect capacity.
Before choosing a host, verify that its graphics and display setup is suitable, that it can sustain your intended encoder workload, and that its network egress and storage fit your needs. Do not assume a small or headless instance is adequate without testing that actual configuration. There is no universal server size or comparable current provider price established here; check current plan specifications against your workload. The Vultr Ubuntu streaming-server guide is an example of a provider-authored approach, not a performance guarantee or endorsement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install OBS and prepare remote access
Install OBS from a supported source for your chosen Linux distribution and release, and provide the required graphics/display environment. The exact package commands depend on the distribution and version; consult the OBS installation instructions for the system you are using. Arrange secure remote administration so you can inspect OBS, change settings, and recover it if the process or host fails. This setup is not a background-daemon-only task: OBS needs the appropriate display and graphics stack.
Connect OBS to YouTube with RTMPS
-
Open the stream you created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS/SSL. Its current encoder-settings documentation is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
-
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube RTMPS if it is available in the service list, then enter the stream key. If you configure a custom server, use the current RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. OBS’s service list includes
rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, but the URL YouTube supplies for your stream is authoritative. -
Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password and address: do not expose it in public configuration, logs, screenshots, or source control. You can review the YouTube encoder setup at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Set video, bitrate, and audio for the workload
In OBS, configure the output for the resolution and frame rate you intend to deliver, then choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for that combination and codec. Your stable available upload bandwidth must support that bitrate; the right value cannot be selected without knowing your resolution, frame rate, codec, and egress capacity. For standard RTMP/RTMPS streams, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, permits up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). These are platform recommendations, not measurements of your server’s performance. Use the current YouTube table for the exact settings and audio guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
For a basic SDR broadcast, keep the configuration aligned across OBS output, scene content, and the intended playback quality. HDR has separate codec and device constraints and is not needed for a basic setup.
Test the full path before relying on it
-
Start a private or unlisted test stream and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room before going public.
-
Check playback on YouTube for both picture and sound, and verify that the selected resolution and frame rate behave as expected.

-
If you are recording locally as a fallback, confirm that the recording file exists and continues to grow. A stream preview alone does not prove that local recording is working.
-
Monitor audio and video during operation, and arrange alerts and a recovery procedure for OBS or host failure. YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring in its live-streaming tips.
Plan for interruptions, recordings, and long runtimes
Keep the host powered and network-connected, protect the stream key, and plan how you will detect and recover from a stopped OBS process, lost network, or host failure. A server that can run OBS continuously still needs operational monitoring; no particular uptime or automatic recovery behavior is guaranteed by the setup itself.
If you need a durable recording, maintain an independent local recording and check that it is being written successfully. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance is at Archive live streams. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams; see Use DVR on live streams. If a single replay matters, plan archive-friendly segments rather than relying on one uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours.

Common remote OBS problems
-
OBS will not launch or has no usable display: Check that the Linux host provides the required OpenGL-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland environment. A headless server should not be presumed suitable.
-
The stream fails to connect: Recheck the current YouTube RTMPS server URL and stream key in Live Control Room and OBS. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
-
YouTube reports unstable or poor-quality video: Check that the bitrate matches YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate, and that the host has stable egress capacity at that rate.
-
Encoding stutters or drops frames: The host may not sustain the encoder and scene workload. Reassess resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity against the server’s actual capability.

The live stream is available but there is no replay: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use local recording if the archive is important, and verify that files are being written.
-
The broadcast stops while nobody is watching the server: Add process and stream monitoring, alerts, and a recovery plan. A remote host removes dependence on a home computer being on, but does not remove the need to detect failures.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining a remote OBS host, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
