To run an always-on YouTube livestream on a cloud GPU, rent a GPU virtual machine (VM), install a supported GPU driver and encoder such as OBS, connect it to YouTube Live with a stream key, and supervise the stream process so it can recover from failures. Budget for the VM running continuously, storage, and network egress—not just the GPU—and decide whether you need a general-purpose GPU at all: it can suit real-time graphics or compositing, while prerecorded playlists may be simpler to run with a hosted streaming service.
Is a cloud GPU the right way to keep your channel live?
A cloud GPU is a rented computer with a graphics processor in a provider’s data center. You control the operating system and can run OBS or another encoder on it, so your home computer does not need to stay on. This flexibility comes with operating work: you are responsible for the VM, drivers, encoder configuration, credentials, monitoring, and recovery.

There is no single best GPU model or provider established for every stream. Availability and cost vary by provider, configuration, and region. YouTube’s encoder guide lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as a verified encoder and describes support for live processing up to 4Kp60 HEVC; that is an available managed-encoder path, not evidence that it is the cheapest or best fit for an individual creator.
What to prepare before renting a VM
Enable YouTube Live and create a stream
Live streaming must be enabled on your channel before an encoder can send a feed. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and use the encoder setup details provided there. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming.

Define the workload and verify compatibility
Decide the output resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and codec before selecting an instance. A GPU is useful when the workload needs real-time graphics, compositing, or hardware video encoding; it is not automatically necessary for every stream. Check that the selected VM exposes a compatible hardware encoder to its guest operating system and OBS build. Confirm availability and pricing in the region where you intend to run it before making a long-term commitment.
Protect the stream key
Treat the YouTube stream key as a password. NVIDIA warns that anyone with the key can take over the stream. Do not put it in screenshots, public logs, shared cloud-init files, or source code. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.

Set up OBS on the cloud GPU
- Create the VM: Choose a GPU instance and supported guest OS that match the stream’s output and encoding requirements. Confirm the instance’s GPU and encoder are available to that OS before relying on it.
- Install the operating system’s GPU driver: Use the cloud provider’s and GPU vendor’s supported driver instructions for the chosen OS and instance. Verify that the operating system recognizes the GPU and that the encoder software can access its hardware encoder.
- Install OBS: Install a build compatible with the guest OS and GPU driver. Add the required media, scenes, audio, overlays, and other production sources.
- Connect YouTube: In OBS, configure YouTube as the service or ingest destination and use the stream key or an account connection supported by the current OBS workflow. Keep the key private.
- Choose an encoder and codec: Select a hardware encoder only if the GPU, driver, OBS build, and YouTube ingest workflow support it. NVIDIA recommends NVENC for YouTube in its broadcasting guide. Its out-of-the-box guidance recommends AV1 on RTX 40-series GPUs or HEVC otherwise. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every combination is accepted for every stream. Check current compatibility and YouTube ingest options for your specific GPU, OBS version, and stream type.
- Start a test stream: Verify the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room before treating the setup as production-ready. Check that video, audio, overlays, and the selected output are correct.
Keep the stream running and plan for recovery
A continuous broadcast depends on more than OBS: the VM must remain available, the network path must work, source media must be accessible, and the encoder process must stay healthy. Set up a supervised startup and restart method appropriate to your operating system, plus alerts that tell you when the process or stream has stopped. The exact service-manager steps depend on the OS and cloud platform; verify them against their current documentation.
Test recovery before relying on the stream: perform a controlled VM or OBS restart, confirm the encoder starts again, and check that YouTube receives the feed. Interruptible or spot capacity can reduce compute expense but can also be reclaimed. If continuity matters, use capacity whose interruption terms you accept and plan for restart supervision or failover. Do not assume an interruptible instance will keep a 24/7 broadcast uninterrupted.

Estimate the full cost of a month online
For a VM that runs continuously, estimate the month’s running hours multiplied by the selected instance rate, then add the other charges that apply to your configuration:
- Attached storage and snapshots.
- Network egress, which can be material for a continuously transmitted video feed.
- Public IP charges, if applicable.
- Taxes and any region-specific charges.
Rates depend on provider, region, and configuration, so use the provider’s current calculator for the actual instance and disk you plan to use. AWS describes per-second On-Demand billing subject to a minimum billing interval and separately explains data-transfer pricing; Google Cloud lists VM, disk, network, and GPU price components. The available figures do not establish a comparable all-in monthly cost for one specific always-on streaming setup.

Hosted alternatives for prerecorded streams
If your source is uploaded video arranged as a playlist rather than a custom real-time scene, a hosted streamer can avoid managing a general-purpose GPU VM. Streamstead and LiveGoLive market cloud-hosted continuous streaming, automatic reconnect, or playlist playback. Those are vendor claims; check each service’s current limits, pricing, rights requirements, and support before choosing. A hosted playlist service may not provide the control required for a custom real-time application.
