To stream ambient music continuously with FFmpeg, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then publish a looping audio source—and optionally a still image—to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key. The example below is a template, not a tested command: verify your FFmpeg build and test the actual media in a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the required input and encoder support, including
libx264for the example below. Available encoders vary by build; check yours before you plan a long-running broadcast. - Prepare an audio file and, if desired, artwork or another visual. You need the right to use both in a live broadcast.
- Use a stable internet connection with upload capacity above the combined stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream using an encoder.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. The key is a credential that lets your encoder send video to your channel; keep it private.
- Use the ingest URL and key exactly as shown in Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. Its encoder setup is described in YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
Prepare a looping audio-and-image command
This example loops one audio file with a still image. Replace artwork.png, ambient-audio.m4a, and the output value with your files and the RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio.

-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'FFmpeg’s documentation defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. Input options apply to the next input, so the loop option must precede -i ambient-audio.m4a. The image loop is separately configured before its input. The command uses real-time input pacing and FLV output for publishing to an RTMP-family server.
The sample’s 3 Mbps video bitrate is only an illustrative 720p-class starting point if you configure a 720p output; it does not scale the artwork or guarantee a resolution. Choose a resolution and bitrate together. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 480p30, 6 Mbps for 720p30, and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Consult the full YouTube live encoder settings and leave upload headroom rather than matching your connection’s maximum speed.

Choose settings for a stable stream
Video resolution and bitrate
Use the bitrate recommendation that corresponds to your intended resolution and frame rate. The command above encodes at 30 fps, but it does not include a scaling filter: artwork dimensions determine the encoded image dimensions. If you need a specific output resolution, add an appropriate scale filter and confirm the resulting frame size in a short test.
Codec, rate control, and keyframes
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP—two seconds. The example sets a target bitrate and maximum rate, but a short private test is prudent to verify behavior with your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest.

Latency and playback
An ambient broadcast usually does not need real-time audience interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; the exact tradeoff depends on the setup, so choose a latency mode in Studio based on whether interaction matters more than smooth playback.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the FFmpeg command and open the stream’s preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that both audio and image are arriving, then listen for gaps, clipping, unexpected silence, or repeated transitions. Use media representative of the planned stream.
- Confirm that the stream is accessible as intended before promoting it. YouTube recommends testing the stream and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
- Watch the upload connection and stream health while live. Network disruptions can break an FFmpeg feed; the encoder process alone does not guarantee continuous availability.
Clear music rights before going live
Use ambient recordings, music, and artwork you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can cause YouTube to replace the image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the stream not to be interrupted. Check the terms of your license and resolve allowlisting with the rights holder before scheduling a long broadcast. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Plan for the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If you need a durable recording, keep a separate local archive of the source or recording process.
