Best FFmpeg Settings for a 24/7 YouTube Stream from an Indian VPS

Use H.264, CBR, AAC stereo, and two-second keyframes for a YouTube loop, then test whether your Indian VPS can sustain the selected output.

For a prerecorded video looping to YouTube from an Indian VPS, start with H.264 video, CBR, AAC stereo audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations, then verify that the VPS can encode and sustain the upload continuously. An Indian server location by itself does not guarantee a stable route or uninterrupted stream.

Recommended YouTube settings

YouTube’s recommendations below are for H.264 live encoding. They are platform settings, not a guarantee of the picture quality or reliability a particular VPS will deliver. Match the setting to your source, encoder capacity, and sustained outbound bandwidth.

Output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube recommends AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. For SDR, use progressive video, square pixels, and Rec. 709. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Starting FFmpeg command for a prerecorded loop

This template re-encodes an MP4 to a 720p30-style bitrate target and loops the input indefinitely. It does not resize or normalize the source, so verify the actual output resolution and frame rate; add a scale filter if you need to change resolution. The example has not been tested against your particular FFmpeg build, VPS, or ingest endpoint.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

The 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps. The optional audio map lets the command continue if the file has no audio; if it does, the output uses AAC stereo settings. The example does not apply a separate scaling or color-conversion filter. Check the resulting stream against the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, especially if you replace encoding with stream copying.

Choose a destination and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its current stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes this workflow.
  2. Substitute the exact URL and key supplied for that stream, using the format required by your ingest endpoint and installed FFmpeg build. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, shared logs, or shell history.
  3. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol and output format. The command uses FLV output; the actual URL form must match the endpoint you selected.

Adjusting quality and frame rate

The command’s 8 Mbps target is YouTube’s recommendation for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps; it is not a universal setting for every source. For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps, but use it only when the source, CPU capacity, and VPS egress can sustain it. If they cannot, step down to a supported format such as 720p30 rather than choosing a target the server cannot maintain. YouTube advises testing representative movement and audio, using a reliable quality for the available connection, and monitoring stream health.

For 1080p60, the platform recommendation is 17 Mbps; the VPS must also encode that output and maintain the outbound rate. Select a frame rate and resolution the source can genuinely provide. A higher target does not restore detail absent from the original video.

What an Indian VPS changes—and what it does not

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not set a different bitrate or ingest address for Indian VPSs, and it does not establish that one Indian provider or route is better. Geographic location alone is not evidence of stable, sustained upload capacity to YouTube. Before relying on a host for continuous streaming, check:

A speed test is useful but does not prove that the route will remain stable for a 24/7 broadcast. Test from the selected server and inspect YouTube’s stream health before depending on it.

Set up and validate the stream

  1. Verify that your YouTube channel is eligible to live stream, then create the stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Choose a resolution and frame rate that your source and VPS can sustain, and use the corresponding H.264 bitrate recommendation above.
  3. Start FFmpeg with the stream URL and protected key. Confirm that the process remains active and YouTube receives the expected video and audio.
  4. Use the Live Control Room preview to check playback, stream health, and any warnings before making the broadcast public.
  5. Test with representative motion and audio. Monitor the FFmpeg process, CPU, network, and—if recording locally—available disk space.
  6. Deliberately test recovery from a temporary network interruption and confirm what happens in Live Control Room before relying on the setup.

YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, checking the preview, and continuing to monitor audio and video quality. Its live streaming tips cover encoder preparation and monitoring.

Recovering from a temporary publishing failure

A basic FFmpeg process may exit when publishing fails. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that can continue real-time processing and attempt to recover from temporary output failures:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This excerpt illustrates documented FIFO recovery options; adapt it to the actual input, bitrate, output, and FFmpeg version. FFmpeg describes attempting recovery every second in its formats and options documentation. Recovery does not guarantee YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted public event after a disconnect. It also does not replace process supervision, monitoring, or a real recovery test. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes reconnect controls, but which options apply depends on the protocol and whether the installed build supports them for the relevant input or output.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room, the URL format, the selected protocol, and whether the FFmpeg build supports the output. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
  • Stream health reports instability or the video buffers: Check sustained outbound capacity and route stability from the VPS, not just its advertised speed. Reduce the output bitrate or step down in resolution or frame rate until the server can sustain the stream.
  • CPU is saturated or the stream cannot maintain its target: Use a less demanding output target or encoding preset, then test again. Do not assume the VPS can encode a resolution merely because it can upload at the corresponding bitrate.
  • Output settings do not match the plan: Inspect the encoded stream. The example does not scale the input, and stream copying will not convert it to the selected resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
  • The process stops after a network interruption: Confirm whether FFmpeg exited and inspect its error output. Configure and test a recovery method such as the FIFO pattern, plus process supervision; then check how YouTube handles the reconnect in Live Control Room.
  • The stream returns but the public event is interrupted: FFmpeg-side recovery cannot guarantee that YouTube preserves a single uninterrupted event. Verify the behavior with a deliberate test and monitor the control room.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo avoids keeping an FFmpeg process and VPS under your own supervision. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
