Yes—if “free” means no paid streaming software or hosting subscription. A church can use YouTube Live and OBS Studio to loop rights-cleared recordings, but electricity, internet data, a working computer and someone to monitor the stream still have costs. The free route is practical for a small church that can keep its equipment and connection running and manage interruptions.
What the free setup requires
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no current live-stream restrictions.
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and remain on for the planned broadcast.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream, plus spare bandwidth.
- Sermon video or audio and visuals the church owns or is permitted to use.
- Someone able to check the stream and respond if the computer, power, internet or YouTube feed fails.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Its live-stream tips also say the channel must have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before scheduling the first broadcast: YouTube encoder setup and YouTube live-streaming tips.
Set up OBS and start the YouTube stream
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from OBS Project. OBS is free and open source; its Media Source can play a video file and loop it. A church can use a static image with sermon audio or a sequence of recordings, subject to rights for every component.
- Prepare a YouTube broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder workflow. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it could send a feed to the church’s broadcast. YouTube also supports RTMPS, an encrypted transport option for compatible encoders. - Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the relevant custom server option, and enter the server URL and stream key. Do not share the key publicly.
- Add the sermon media. In the scene you will broadcast, add a Media Source, select the file and enable looping if you want that recording to repeat. For a playlist or scheduled rotation, arrange the media and transitions in OBS before going live, then test the order and audio. Keep a local copy of important recordings.
- Test the feed privately or before the public start. Start sending from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public. Listen for intelligible, unclipped audio and confirm that the image, playback and loop behave as intended.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Use YouTube’s live control to go live when the preview is ready. Keep OBS, the computer and the church’s internet connection running, and have a person responsible for checking that the feed remains active.
Choose settings and bandwidth for a stable feed
For a sermon channel, prioritize clear speech and a stable connection over high resolution. Select a resolution and bitrate that the church’s actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload capacity in reserve above the stream’s bitrate; test from the church’s own connection rather than relying on a speed-test result from another location. There is no universal bitrate that will be reliable for every Indian church: available upload speed, congestion, data plans and power conditions vary by location, and no local connection measurement is available here. If OBS or YouTube reports unstable health, reduce the output demand or improve the connection before relying on the stream for continuous service.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A continuous broadcast is not the same as a dependable archive. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 schedule, divide programming into segments shorter than 12 hours and deliberately start the next stream; retain local recordings if preserving sermons matters. There is an operational trade-off: each handoff needs attention, and a stream ending unexpectedly may leave a gap until someone restarts it. OBS and YouTube do not guarantee uninterrupted operation across failures of power, broadband, the computer or the platform.

Clear every part of the program for use
A sermon recording does not automatically clear the rest of a church service. Check rights for worship songs, backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, slides, video clips and any other third-party material. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted if its rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and its Terms of Service before using such material.
Using original sermons and visuals the church created is the simplest way to reduce rights complications; it is not a substitute for checking any music or other third-party material included in the recording.
