You can run a 24/7 YouTube music stream from an India-region virtual private server (VPS) by hosting an encoder on the server and sending its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Before you start, secure explicit livestream rights for every track, confirm your channel can go live, and make sure the VPS has enough sustained network transfer for your chosen audio and video bitrate. A low advertised monthly price alone does not establish that a plan will support a continuous stream affordably.
What you need before you start
- Livestream rights: documented permission covering live streaming, the territories where the stream may be available, and any monetization or replay you plan. If a rights holder uses Content ID, arrange channel allowlisting where required.
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube’s current help guidance says live streamers must be at least 16 and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check your channel’s eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio before provisioning a server.
- A VPS and server-compatible encoder: the server hosts the software that reads your lawful source material and sends the stream to YouTube. It does not provide music rights.
- Sufficient upload capacity and transfer allowance: the encoder must sustain the outgoing bitrate, and the plan’s monthly transfer policy must accommodate a connection that runs continuously.
- A monitoring and recovery plan: decide how you will notice an encoder or connection failure, restart or reconnect it, and verify the live player is still available.
Clear the music rights before streaming
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say the creator represents and warrants having all necessary worldwide rights for Live Content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. The terms also require relevant territorial licensing, registration, notification, and approval requirements to be met. Get the rights in writing and check that they explicitly cover continuous livestreaming; do not assume a personal music subscription or an ordinary video-use license is enough.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, issue a warning, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the matched material remains. YouTube notes that even licensed third-party content may require the channel to be allowlisted by the owner in Content ID. Resolve that before going live, rather than relying on a license document alone.
Do not assume Creator Music grants permission for a live feed. YouTube’s cited Creator Music usage guidance describes relevant licensed or revenue-sharing video terms that do not include live streams.

Choose a VPS by total running capacity, not headline price
Compare India-region server options against the full job: a stable encoder process, a reliable network path to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and enough monthly transfer under the provider’s actual policy. A Mumbai VPS may be a practical location to consider for an India-based operation, but location alone does not establish suitability or streaming performance.
- Confirm the region-specific transfer allowance and what happens when it is exceeded. AWS says transfer allowances differ by region.
- Check whether the plan provides IPv4, IPv6, or both, and verify that your encoder and selected YouTube ingest endpoint work with its network configuration.
- Review CPU, memory, and storage against the actual encoder and source files. No specific smallest instance size is established as sufficient here; measure resource use with your chosen software and stream profile.
- Include recurring charges, applicable taxes, and possible transfer overages in your own cost calculation. Provider prices and network terms can change.
As listed on AWS’s pricing page accessed in 2026, Mumbai examples include a 512 MB IPv6-only Lightsail bundle at $3.50 per month with 1 TB of transfer, and a 0.5 GB bundle with public IPv4 at $5 per month with 1 TB of transfer. These are provider-published examples, not recommendations or a complete cost estimate. Check the live AWS Lightsail pricing page for the region, plan, transfer terms, and current price before buying. AWS describes Lightsail bundles as combining CPU, memory, SSD storage, and transfer allowance; see its Lightsail overview.

Estimate bandwidth for a stream that never stops
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so calculate transfer from the bitrate you actually configure rather than assuming a small VPS allowance will be enough. As a planning approximation, monthly decimal gigabytes are:
bitrate in kilobits per second × 0.0108 × 24 × 30

This approximates a 30-day month and counts one continuous encoded output. For example, a 1,000 kbps stream is about 25.9 GB per day and 777.6 GB in 30 days, before protocol overhead or other server traffic. Add audio and video together when they are separate bitrate components; use the total outgoing bitrate. Compare the estimate with the plan’s applicable transfer allowance and overage policy, which may define measurement differently.
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the primary and backup stream bitrates. The VPS needs to sustain the configured outgoing bitrate with that headroom; a transfer cap and an upload-speed limit are separate constraints.

Set up the YouTube live event and encoder
- Enable live streaming and check channel status. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is available for the channel and confirm there is no active restriction. Create or select the live event, set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata, and note whether you will test privately or unlisted before launch.
- Get the ingest details. In the event’s Live Control Room, obtain YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube supports software encoders; use the URL and key generated for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in public scripts, or share it unnecessarily.
- Install a compatible encoder on the VPS. Select software that runs on your server operating system and can play the source material while sending a live output. Configuration details differ by encoder, so use that software’s own current documentation for installation, process management, and restart behavior.
- Configure secure ingest and stream settings. Use RTMPS where supported, enter YouTube’s ingest URL and key, and set a constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set resolution and bitrate to a profile the encoder, server, and available transfer can sustain.
- Test before making it public. Start a private or unlisted test, check the picture and sound in Live Control Room, review stream health, and confirm that the public-facing live player behaves as expected for your chosen visibility. Test how your setup recovers after an encoder stop or connection interruption.
- Keep the service observable. Arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder or unhealthy ingest, restart or reconnect it, and confirm YouTube is receiving the feed again. The exact monitoring and automatic-restart method depends on your operating system and encoder; no particular daemon or restart configuration is established here. Rotate the YouTube stream key if you believe it has been exposed.
Google for Developers describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled over an SSL connection.” Its RTMPS ingest guide documents the secure transport, endpoint, application path, and port 443. YouTube also recommends reliable connectivity and testing, previewing, checking stream health, and monitoring quality in its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

- YouTube shows a copyright warning or placeholder: a track may have matched Content ID or the rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel. Stop or replace the affected material and resolve the rights or allowlisting issue before resuming.
- The encoder cannot connect: verify that the event is live-ready, the ingest URL and stream key are the ones for that event, the VPS can reach the endpoint on the required secure port, and the key has not been changed or revoked.
- Stream health is unstable: check actual sustained server upload capacity against the combined stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Look for resource contention or network limitations at the VPS provider.
- The stream stops after running for a while: check encoder and system logs, server restarts, process status, and transfer or network limits. Configure and test monitoring and recovery for the software you selected rather than assuming a VPS automatically restarts a failed encoder.
- The feed is technically live but not accessible as expected: check event visibility, scheduled/live state, and the player URL in YouTube Studio; a private or unlisted test will not appear publicly like a public stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the feed running without a computer or home connection staying on. It is #1 among the options discussed here for an always-on cloud stream, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and a first day free.
