If both drop, investigate the encoder-to-Dacast feed, current ingest URL, encoder, and network. If Dacast stays live while YouTube goes offline, focus on the Simulcast destination, YouTube URL or key, Dacast channel eligibility, and available Simulcast credits.
How Dacast Simulcast reaches YouTube
With Dacast Simulcast, your encoder sends its live feed to a Dacast encoder live channel. Dacast then forwards that existing channel to YouTube using the destination’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key. That gives you two links to diagnose: encoder to Dacast, and Dacast to YouTube. Dacast’s Simulcast documentation describes this forwarding setup.
Dacast Simulcast requires an encoder live channel; HLS-ingest and VOD Rebroadcast channels are not eligible. The account also needs Simulcast credits. If you have just added or removed a destination, its listing may not update immediately, so check again after a short interval.
Find which part of the stream is dropping
- Start a test stream and keep the Dacast preview and YouTube Live Control Room open at the same time. Dacast recommends checking its preview and destination together.
- If the Dacast preview drops too, investigate the encoder-to-Dacast path: confirm the current channel ingest URL, check the encoder’s output and local network, and look for encoder errors or resource strain.
- If the Dacast preview stays live but YouTube drops, inspect the Simulcast destination settings, YouTube ingest URL and key, channel eligibility, and remaining credits.
- Note the times of each drop and compare them with Dacast and YouTube stream-health messages, encoder logs, and upload measurements. Without those details, the symptom alone cannot establish a specific cause.
Use Dacast’s multi-destination setup guide for the preview-and-destination check.

Check for a changed or incorrect Dacast ingest URL
A common configuration lead is a Dacast ingest URL saved before a Simulcast destination was created. Dacast states that the ingest destination URL changes when a multistream destination is configured. Open the current channel’s Encoder Setup and update the encoder to the URL shown there if it differs from the saved value.
Do not copy an ingest URL from another channel or assume the host is the same in every region. Dacast’s Create Stream reference notes that the returned ingest host varies by region. After changing a destination, confirm the active settings against the current channel rather than relying on an old saved configuration.

Verify the YouTube destination and stream key
- Confirm that the YouTube ingest URL and stream key in Dacast belong to the intended live event and are current.
- If YouTube reports an encoder startup or authentication error, create or retrieve a current key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the Dacast destination. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends refreshing the key for startup errors.
- Do not treat a refreshed key as a universal solution for a stream that starts successfully and then drops; investigate the encoder and network for midstream failures too.
- Confirm that the Dacast channel is an eligible encoder live channel and that the account has Simulcast credits. Dacast documents a 403 response when credits run out.
Check upload capacity and streaming settings
Measure upload performance under conditions similar to the actual broadcast, including other people or applications using the connection. Download speed alone does not establish that the stream has enough outbound capacity. YouTube recommends keeping total outgoing bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom; it also warns that shared office traffic can limit an individual connection and that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s published ingestion guidance, then choose settings your connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends CBR encoding, RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular Dacast configuration is correct; select the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, and do not exceed the capacity available to the outgoing stream. See YouTube’s current encoding guidance.

- If upload capacity is tight, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, or reduce competing network traffic.
- If the problem appears only when other people share the connection, retest when that traffic is lower. A wired connection can be a useful diagnostic if you suspect Wi-Fi instability, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- If multiple independent viewer networks report the same issue, investigate the outgoing stream and encoder. If reports are limited to viewers on one shared network, that network may be involved.
Inspect encoder health and YouTube restrictions
Encoder and source
Update the encoder software and check its output, CPU load, error messages, and local recording during the failure. YouTube advises that poor encoder output points toward a source or encoder issue; if output looks healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection. Trying another encoder is useful only as a diagnostic when local evidence points toward the current encoder.
Copyright and Community Guidelines
Check YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines notices. YouTube says a live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated when third-party content continues after a warning or when a relevant strike applies. A policy interruption can resemble a technical failure, so review Studio notices alongside stream-health warnings. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.

Prepare the next broadcast to fail less often
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event and start it at least 15 minutes before airtime, as YouTube recommends.
- Check the YouTube preview before going live, and monitor stream-health messages and audio/video quality during the broadcast.
- Test your failover plan by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the backup behaves as expected.
- Verify that local archive files are growing and check access from a mobile device and the channel or watch page.
- Use representative motion and audio in your test rather than relying only on a static screen, then stop the encoder after ending the event on YouTube.
See YouTube’s live streaming tips for event setup and monitoring guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Dacast Simulcast with an HLS-ingest channel?
No. Dacast documents Simulcast eligibility for encoder live channels, not HLS-ingest or VOD Rebroadcast channels.
Does a new YouTube stream key fix every disconnect?
No. Refreshing the key is relevant to startup or authentication errors; a stream that starts and later drops also calls for encoder and network diagnosis.
