Trace the signal from the music source to the encoder, then YouTube’s ingest and finally the viewer’s device. Check the encoder’s actual output before changing settings: a song playing on your computer does not prove that the encoder is sending it.
First, find out whether the silence is local or stream-wide
Listen to the stream from another device or network, or ask a viewer on a different connection to check it. If only one person hears silence, the cause is more likely that viewer’s device or connection. If several viewers on different connections report the same problem, investigate the encoder and stream. YouTube describes this distinction in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Check the signal in order
1. Confirm the source and audio routing
Make sure the intended music, playlist, or other audio source is actually active and routed to the encoder’s stream output. A track playing through your computer speakers or headphones may not be selected as the encoder’s input. Listen to or inspect the stream output directly in the encoder; YouTube’s advice is to check the stream’s look and sound there.
2. Verify the encoder is sending audio
Check the encoder’s audio input, track selection, and output controls. Some encoders have a separate checkbox or option to enable audio. A video preview or a stream marked live does not establish that an audio stream is being sent. If the encoder itself has no audio output, fix the source or routing before investigating YouTube.

3. Read YouTube’s health messages
Open the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and its timestamped errors. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance includes a specific no-audio ingest message, as well as errors for multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, and incorrect audio settings. Address the error it reports rather than changing unrelated settings.
4. Check audio format and channel layout
For the documented H.264 video ingest context, YouTube’s error guidance identifies AAC audio and gives 128 Kbps as the recommended audio bitrate; it also includes a 44.1 kHz sample-rate correction message. These are guidance for that ingest and error context, not universal settings for every encoder configuration. Follow the message shown for your stream and verify the encoder’s actual output settings.

YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1-channel ingestion. Other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. A radio stream generally does not need 5.1, so if multichannel output is enabled, check that the channel layout and encoder mode are deliberate. See YouTube’s 5.1 surround sound guidance.
5. Check encoder load and the outbound connection
If the encoder output sounds correct but viewers still report trouble, check encoder errors and CPU load, inspect a local recording if available, and test the strength of the outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends these checks when troubleshooting a live stream.

6. Recheck the stream destination and key if ingest is not clean
If the encoder cannot establish a clean ingest or its saved settings may be wrong, confirm that its stream settings match the selected YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains that the YouTube Live server URL and stream key must be entered in the encoder’s stream settings. Check the selected stream and key in Live Control Room and the corresponding encoder configuration.
