You can make a YouTube sleep-sounds livestream in OBS by adding your visual file and audio file as separate sources, enabling looping, and sending the scene to YouTube Live with a stream URL and private stream key. Before relying on it overnight, test that both files play and loop as expected, and plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay on for the duration of the broadcast.
- A video or image file for the visual and a separate audio file for the sleep sounds. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV for audio.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, plus the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Stable local paths for both files, a reliable power supply and an upload connection capable of carrying the stream.
The OBS Project describes Media Source as a way to add media files to scenes. Separate sources let you control the visual and sound independently, but they do not guarantee that the two files will remain synchronized or restart together. Test the complete scene before broadcasting.
Set up separate looping sources in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to create a scene for the sleep stream. Give it a recognizable name so you can select it again after a restart.
- Add the visual. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source, choose the video file, and enable its Loop property. Adjust the source in the preview so it fills the canvas as intended. If you want to rotate through multiple visual files, add a VLC Video Source playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies matching 64-bit VLC.
- Add the sound separately. Add another Media Source and select the audio file. Choose the source’s looping behavior as appropriate for that file and setup. Confirm that the source is active and that its level is audible without clipping in the OBS audio mixer.
- Preview a complete cycle. Start the scene and listen while watching the preview long enough to see how both sources behave at their ends and beginnings. Check what happens when you switch away from and back to the scene, and after restarting OBS. Make any required adjustments before going live; independent sources are not documented as restarting in lockstep.
- Set output for YouTube. Configure OBS’s video and output settings to meet YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen resolution and connection. The material available here does not establish a particular bitrate, resolution, frame rate or keyframe interval, so do not treat a generic fixed setting as universally correct. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s Live Control Room and OBS’s output controls for your stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming configuration. The key is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream; reset it in YouTube if you think it has been exposed.
- Start streaming in OBS, then watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that both the image and sound arrive correctly before leaving the broadcast unattended.
Keep the local stream running
With OBS running locally, your computer, media files, power and internet upload connection are all part of the broadcast. Configure the computer so it will not sleep or shut down automatically during the stream, keep source files at stable paths, and monitor the live feed. These are practical operating precautions, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection will run uninterrupted.
- Keep the computer plugged into reliable power and check its sleep and automatic-shutdown settings.
- Avoid moving, renaming or disconnecting the source files while OBS is using them.
- Check OBS and YouTube’s preview periodically, especially after any restart or loss of network connection.
- If you need a replay, make a local recording backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s automatic archive.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube’s current archive guidance says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, record locally and plan a deliberate restart or event schedule before the stream passes that threshold. A restart creates a separate broadcast, so do not promise viewers that one watch page will remain uninterrupted across separate broadcasts. YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, which is an event/video, from a stream, the audio-video feed sent to YouTube. Its API documentation describes an example where a stream continues for a 24/7 feed while a second broadcast is created for a subset event; that example does not establish automatic session management for every creator.

Use sounds and visuals you have the right to stream
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content on Google services, including the relevant music rights, and require compliance with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Use original, licensed or otherwise authorized audio and visuals. Keep license records and check that they cover livestreaming, the territories you intend to reach and any archived replay.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can result in a placeholder image, warning, interruption or termination. Even when you have licensed third-party content, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the owner before going live rather than assuming a license alone will prevent a match.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The visual stops after one play. | The Media Source’s Loop property may be off, or the file path may no longer resolve. | Reopen the source properties, enable Loop, and confirm the file remains at the selected path. |
| The playlist does not advance or repeat. | VLC Video Source requires VLC, and its playlist loop option must be enabled. | Install the matching VLC version (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), check the playlist entries, and enable Loop Playlist. |
| The audio ends while the visual continues, or vice versa. | The sources are independent and may have different durations or restart behavior. | Test the combined scene through each file’s end and adjust the looping arrangement. Do not assume they synchronize or restart together. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed. | The stream URL or key may be missing, incorrect or reset. | Copy the current values from YouTube’s Live Control Room into OBS and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. |
| The live picture is replaced or the broadcast is interrupted. | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the channel may lack rights or an applicable Content ID allowlist entry. | Use authorized material, retain license records, and confirm any necessary allowlisting with the rights owner. |
| The replay is missing after a long broadcast. | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance threshold. | Record a local backup and schedule a planned restart before the threshold if an archive is important. |
| The stream stops when nobody is at the computer. | The computer may sleep, shut down, lose power or lose its upload connection. | Review power and sleep settings, maintain the connection, and monitor the feed; a local setup depends on all of these remaining available. |
