For a stream that continues without a computer running at home, use a cloud service such as StreamNeo. Before going live, clear the music and visual rights, test the feed, and plan how you will handle interruptions and replays.
What you need for a continuous radio stream
A YouTube live stream is sent by an encoder: software or a service that sends audio and video to YouTube. In a do-it-yourself setup, OBS can encode a looping media file or playlist. For the stream to remain live, the encoder and its host computer must stay on, with a reliable internet connection. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to go live. YouTube’s current requirements include no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum streamer age of 16.
- Audio and visuals you own or have permission to use in the intended live broadcast and any replay.
- An encoder, such as OBS, and a computer that can remain powered and connected for as long as you want the stream to run.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A plan for monitoring, outages, and whether you need the broadcast archived.
Prepare music and visuals before you build the stream
Make sure your rights cover the actual use: a continuous live broadcast, the territories where it will be available, and any replay viewers may watch later. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. If a rights holder has licensed your use, ask whether they also need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for material used on Google services, including music rights. Do not assume that music is cleared just because it is available in a library, a subscription service, or another creator’s video; check the license for live streaming and replay specifically.

Build the looping scene in OBS
Option 1: loop one file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the radio stream.
- Add a Media Source and select the local video file that contains the audio and visual you want to loop.
- Enable the source’s Loop option. Check that the file plays through and restarts as intended.
- Set the scene canvas and source layout so the visual fills the stream frame without unintended black bars or cropped text.
This is the simplest arrangement when you want one prepared video to repeat. The rotation is whatever has been edited into that file; a single static image does not become varied programming just because the stream runs continuously.
Option 2: rotate a playlist
- Prepare the video or audio-visual files you have rights to use, and put them in the order you want them to play.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create a playlist from those files.
- Enable Loop Playlist and preview playback, including the transition from the last item back to the first.
- Install VLC if the VLC source is unavailable; OBS requires VLC for this source type.
Use a playlist when you want visuals or tracks to rotate among multiple assets. Check each file’s sound level, aspect ratio, and playback before relying on it for an unattended broadcast. OBS documents common media formats, but a format being supported does not establish permission to use its contents.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not post it, include it in a recording, or share it with people who should not control your stream. Regenerate it if it is exposed.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if offered, and enter the stream key and connection details. If OBS prompts for a server, use the stream URL from YouTube.
- In OBS, click Start Streaming. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room and review its audio and video in the preview before going live there.
- Start the broadcast in Live Control Room when the preview is correct. Check the public watch page from another device or browser to confirm viewers can see and hear it.
YouTube’s labels and Studio layout can change. Use the current encoder details shown for the specific stream rather than reusing a key or server address copied from an old setup.
Keep it running and recover from interruptions
A local OBS stream is only 24/7 while the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection remain available. YouTube recommends reliable connectivity, a bandwidth margin, previewing the stream, and ongoing quality checks. For an unattended broadcast, arrange monitoring and decide who can restart the encoder or investigate an outage. A stream key gets the encoder connected; it does not make the stream self-healing.

- Keep the host computer from sleeping, and ensure power and network equipment are stable.
- Check both the encoder’s status and YouTube’s Live Control Room; the public watch page is a useful separate check.
- Have a recovery procedure for a dropped connection, computer restart, or OBS crash. After restoring the encoder, verify that YouTube receives the feed and the public stream is playing again.
- Do not assume an uninterrupted stream simply because the playlist is set to loop. The entire delivery chain must remain available.
Plan archives and monetization separately
Replay archives
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on an indefinitely running broadcast producing one complete replay: if a full archive matters, divide the programming into planned streams under 12 hours and verify the resulting archive behavior in Studio.
Monetization and repetitive programming
Running continuously, changing images, or looping a playlist does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program approval or ad revenue. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, describes repetitive or mass-produced work as “inauthentic content” and says monetized videos, including live streams, need materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other value. Design the programming to provide genuine value rather than treating a rotating visual as a policy workaround.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
- Cause: The stream key or URL is incorrect, stale, or entered in the wrong field. Fix: Copy the current encoder details from that stream’s Live Control Room and re-enter them under OBS Settings > Stream.
- Cause: The stream key was exposed or changed. Fix: Regenerate it in YouTube and update OBS. Keep the replacement private.
The playlist stops, or the visual does not rotate
- Cause: Looping is not enabled, the VLC source is unavailable, or a playlist item cannot play. Fix: Check Loop for a Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, install VLC if needed, and test each item and the playlist wraparound in OBS.
The stream drops or plays with interruptions
- Cause: The host, power, or network connection failed, or YouTube interrupted content after a rights match. Fix: Check OBS and Live Control Room first, restore the encoder connection, then review YouTube notices and the music or visual rights. Ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if applicable.
The stream is live but the replay is incomplete or missing
- Cause: The broadcast ran 12 hours or longer, or archive behavior did not match expectations. Fix: Plan separate streams under 12 hours when archive access matters and confirm the result in YouTube Studio.
