How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream with OBS on an AWS Virtual Machine

A practical guide to running OBS on an AWS EC2 machine for YouTube Live, with the settings to check, realistic testing steps, recovery limits, archive caveats, and cost factors.

You can run OBS on an AWS EC2 virtual machine and send its output to YouTube, but launching a VM is only the start: OBS needs a suitable Linux graphics environment, enough capacity for your encoding workload, and a recovery plan for failures. The setup below walks through the components and tests; the cited official guidance does not certify a particular EC2 configuration as a turnkey, guaranteed 24/7 deployment.

What you need before you start

OBS composes scenes and encodes the outgoing video; EC2 provides the computer that runs it; YouTube Studio supplies the ingest server URL and stream key. The VM must support OBS’s Linux graphics requirements and handle the actual scene, resolution, frame rate, and encoder workload. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and an X or Wayland session for Linux, and warns that compatibility alone does not guarantee adequate streaming performance. Check OBS’s system requirements before choosing an instance.

  • An AWS account and an EC2 instance in a Region you choose.
  • A Linux distribution and graphical desktop session compatible with OBS.
  • A way to connect to and manage that desktop securely.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream, plus its stream URL and private stream key.
  • A test plan for encoding performance, network capacity, stream health, and recovery.

This approach is most suitable when you need OBS scenes or other OBS-specific composition on a remotely managed machine. It is not a set-and-forget guarantee: a running VM or open desktop session does not, by itself, establish automatic recovery after a crash, reboot, network interruption, or YouTube disconnect.

Set up the EC2 machine and desktop

1. Choose an instance for the workload

Decide what OBS will encode before selecting an instance: the scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and whether the workload can use available graphics acceleration all affect performance. The OBS requirements page describes Linux compatibility, not a universally sufficient EC2 instance size. Do not assume that an instance that boots OBS can sustain your intended stream.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use AWS’s current EC2 launch flow to choose an AMI, instance type, key pair, and other launch settings, then launch and verify access to the instance. Canonical’s Ubuntu EC2 launch guide documents that sequence for Ubuntu. The appropriate instance type depends on your workload; no single size is established as sufficient for every OBS scene.

2. Provide a graphical session

OBS’s published Linux requirements include a graphical display environment using X or Wayland. A bare headless server should not be treated as if it automatically meets that requirement. Choose and configure a desktop-access method appropriate to your security and administration needs. Keep remote access restricted, and do not expose desktop or administration services broadly to the internet just to make OBS accessible.

3. Install OBS using current distribution instructions

Follow the official OBS Linux installation guidance for your distribution. OBS lists an Ubuntu package-repository method for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and recommends Flathub on non-Ubuntu distributions. Because the installation page dates from 2021, check its current instructions and your distribution’s compatibility before installing; do not rely on a package command copied from an older guide without verifying it.

Connect OBS to YouTube

1. Create or select the live stream

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream, or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key for the encoder connection. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance for the current interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Add the connection details in OBS

  1. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
  2. Select the YouTube service or the relevant custom RTMP option if your configuration requires it.
  3. Enter the server URL shown for your YouTube stream and paste the matching stream key into the key field.
  4. Save the settings, then confirm that the selected YouTube stream in Live Control Room is the one you mean to broadcast to.

Treat the stream key as a connection credential: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, support post, or command that may be logged. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the replacement key.

Set encoder, video, audio, and network settings

YouTube’s encoder guide recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. It lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s guide lists 10 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are platform settings recommendations, not a guarantee that your EC2 instance can encode or upload reliably. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact stream you plan to send.

  • Connection: use the RTMPS server information supplied for the YouTube stream.
  • Rate control: set CBR and use the bitrate row matching the video codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: use AAC or MP3 as supported by YouTube’s guidance, and check that the intended audio source is active in OBS.
  • Network margin: YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. Include audio and any other outgoing stream traffic when assessing the available bandwidth.

There is no bitrate value that can compensate for an overloaded encoder or unstable network. If OBS reports encoding or connection trouble, test a lower resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, or bitrate as appropriate, then compare the result with YouTube’s current recommendations and stream-health feedback.

Start with a realistic test

  1. Set up the same scenes, sources, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings you expect to use continuously.
  2. Use motion and audio similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends a realistic test rather than testing with an idle or materially different scene.
  3. Start streaming from OBS and open the Live Control Room preview. Check that video and audio arrive as intended and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
  4. Run the workload long enough to observe whether the chosen EC2 configuration remains stable; verify CPU or other available system-resource indicators as part of your own monitoring.
  5. Test what happens if OBS exits, the VM reboots, the network drops, or YouTube disconnects. Confirm your restart, alerting, and reconnection behavior rather than assuming it works.

YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing, preview, bandwidth margin, and failover testing. Official guidance does not define a complete OBS-on-EC2 service manager, reboot recovery design, alerting setup, or failover configuration. Those are engineering decisions you need to implement and verify for your own deployment.

Plan stream continuity and archives

A 24/7 broadcast can be interrupted by either side of the connection: OBS or the VM can fail, the network can break, or YouTube can drop the ingest connection. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains how to connect an encoder and manage a stream, but it does not certify automatic recovery for this EC2/OBS setup. Decide how you will detect an interruption, restart OBS or the host when necessary, reconnect to YouTube, and notify someone if recovery fails. Test those actions instead of treating a permanently running instance as a recovery plan.

Be careful about archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to a single broadcast longer than 12 hours. If preserving an archive matters, consider dividing the broadcast into sessions and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a continuous stream to produce a replay. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes the under-12-hour archive condition.

Check rights and channel policy before looping content

Before broadcasting gameplay, music, or other recorded material, make sure you have the rights needed to use it in a live stream and that the content complies with YouTube’s current policies. Do not assume that owning a game or having permission to upload a recording automatically settles every music, third-party footage, or monetization question. Keep evidence of relevant permissions and check the applicable terms for the material and channel. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist as a planning aid; it is not a substitute for the rights holder’s terms or YouTube’s policies.

Estimate AWS cost for your configuration

There is no defensible universal monthly price for this setup without choosing a Region, instance family and size, operating system, storage, networking, and runtime. A 24/7 machine runs continuously, so estimate compute for the full operating period and account separately for storage and data transfer. AWS says On-Demand pricing depends on instance usage and OS; its pricing page describes per-second billing for several OS families with a 60-second minimum and also covers data-transfer tiers and related services. Rates and details can change, so check the current EC2 On-Demand pricing for your actual choices rather than relying on an unqualified monthly estimate.

  • Compute for the selected instance and OS at continuous runtime.
  • Storage volumes and any local recordings retained on the VM.
  • Network configuration and outbound data-transfer charges.
  • The operational cost of monitoring, patching, reconnecting, and restoring service after failures.

Compare that total—not just the instance’s hourly compute rate—with an always-on local machine or a service built to keep uploaded videos streaming. AWS gives you control of the VM, but you also own its configuration and recovery work.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast from uploaded videos rather than an OBS scene you need to control, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not replace OBS for a live camera feed or custom interactive scene.
