For a live service: compare production encoders
A live-production encoder takes camera and audio sources, combines them with scenes or graphics, and sends the resulting broadcast to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder page names OBS, vMix, Wirecast and Ecamm as options. The available evidence does not establish a comparative winner, current prices or formal 24/7 reliability for these products.

Ecamm’s features are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results. Its production documentation should be checked for current system and upload requirements before choosing it. If YouTube is your only destination, a relay service may add complexity without solving a requirement. Restream’s church page markets simultaneous distribution and prerecorded scheduling; treat those as vendor claims, not evidence of audience reach or reliability.
Match the encoder to the service
- Count camera angles, microphones and mixer feeds, then confirm that the computer and software can accept them.
- Decide whether you need lyrics, slides, lower thirds, scene switching or prerecorded inserts.
- Check whether the software can record locally while streaming and whether volunteers can operate it reliably.
- Use a USB webcam only if it fits the room, lighting, framing and computer. Ecamm documents USB webcams as an input option; YouTube describes external audio and video hardware for encoder productions. See Ecamm’s webcam documentation.
Set up YouTube and the stream responsibly
Enable live streaming and connect the encoder
- Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- In YouTube’s live control room, create or schedule the broadcast and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the channel.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before making the event public. Confirm the correct camera, audio source, graphics and visibility settings.
- For an ongoing operation, assign a named person to scheduled checks. Monitor picture, sound, playback transitions and connection status, and document who can restart the encoder or switch to a backup.
Protect the archive
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it “may not be captured at all.” Keep a local recording when the service or its replay matters, and verify that the recording file is complete. Do not treat a continuous stream as a guaranteed single YouTube replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Clear rights for music and video
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate it if the content remains, and a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. A license alone may not prevent interruption: the rights holder may need to allowlist the church’s channel. Confirm rights for the actual songs, recordings, backing tracks, territories and live and archived uses. Streaming software does not grant those rights. Troubleshoot the common failure points
