How to Loop Worship Videos in OBS for a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one worship video in OBS, add it to your scene as a Media Source, choose the file, and turn on Loop in the source properties. For a rotation of several clips, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. Then test the full playback and YouTube connection before the service; OBS looping a file does not grant permission to stream its music or visuals.

Choose the OBS source that fits your worship video

Setup OBS source What to know
One video file Media Source Enable Loop to replay the file when it finishes. The setting is off by default.
A sequence of video files VLC Video Add clips to its playlist and use Loop Playlist, which is on by default. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents these source options and their playback behavior in its Media Sources guide.

Set up one worship video to loop

  1. Prepare the file. Make sure the video is available on the computer running OBS, then open the scene where it should appear.
  2. Add a Media Source. In Sources, select the add button, choose Media Source, then create a source or select an existing one.
  3. Choose the video and set playback. Browse to the local file and enable Loop. Decide whether Restart playback when source becomes active should remain on. It is on by default: when the source becomes visible again after a scene change, playback starts over. Turn it off if you want playback to continue from its current position when the source becomes active again.
  4. Check the scene layout. Position and size the source in the preview. Confirm that another visible source is not covering it.
  5. Test the loop. Let the clip reach its end and confirm it starts again. Check the transition, picture and audio rather than assuming the setting is working because it is enabled.

Loop a playlist of clips instead

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. In Sources, add a VLC Video source and add the worship clips to its playlist.
  3. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as on by default.
  4. Check the source’s visibility behavior. VLC Video is documented to stop when it is not visible and restart when visible, so a scene change can interrupt playback and start it again.
  5. Play through the playlist, including the final clip returning to the first, before using it in a broadcast.

Use Media Source when one file is easy to manage and its scene re-entry behavior suits the service. Choose VLC Video when maintaining a multi-clip playlist is more useful and installing VLC is acceptable.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the broadcast

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the stream using the encoder workflow and locate the stream key. YouTube describes the key as what allows the encoder to send its feed to the stream; treat it as private.
  2. Connect OBS using YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Labels can vary with software versions, so follow the current YouTube encoder setup guide.
  3. Set video output for the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast, and choose an encoder bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current recommendations for H.264 are 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; the corresponding minimums are 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can hold a stable stream.
  4. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for other resolutions, frame rates and encoder details.
  5. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast. Preview the feed in Live Control Room and check the video loop, audio and stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; see its streaming tips.
  6. During the service, keep an eye on both OBS and Live Control Room for playback, sound and connection issues.

Do not treat 1080p settings as mandatory for every stream. Choose settings for the actual output, encoder and sustainable upload capacity, leave headroom where possible, and test before relying on them live.

Check copyright and licensing before streaming worship content

Being able to play a local file in OBS does not mean you have permission to stream it. Rights may differ for the song, the particular recording and the video’s visual content, and rules vary by territory.

CCLI’s US Streaming License information says its Streaming License covers qualifying worship songs performed live online. Streaming Plus extends coverage to certain authorized master recordings and multitracks. CCLI says video content in a stream usually requires permission from the copyright owner; it identifies SongSelect Lyric Videos as a stated exception for Streaming Plus license holders during a live stream. This is US-facing information, not a universal license or clearance for every song, recording, commercial music video or visual.

Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems

  • The video plays once and stops: For a Media Source, open its properties and enable Loop. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist.
  • The video starts over after changing scenes: Media Source has Restart playback when source becomes active on by default. Turn it off if playback should continue from where it was when the source becomes active again.
  • A playlist stops or starts over on a scene change: VLC Video is documented to stop when hidden and restart when visible. Plan around that behavior or keep the source visible in the scene as appropriate.
  • VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC, and ensure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The source is missing from the preview: Check that the source is visible and not obscured by another source; adjust its position and size in the scene.
  • YouTube shows connection or stream-health trouble: Check the encoder connection and private stream key, then review the resolution, frame rate and bitrate against the available upload capacity. Test again with similar audio and motion, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
  • A video is claimed, blocked or otherwise flagged: Recheck permission for the song, recording and visuals, plus the applicable license terms. Holding a license does not ensure a platform will leave every upload available.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded worship videos playing around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping OBS running on a local computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
