You can run a continuous YouTube music stream from an Ubuntu server by sending authorized audio and video through FFmpeg to YouTube Live. Create a stream in YouTube Studio, configure FFmpeg for YouTube’s ingest requirements, and keep the process running on an always-on host. The setup does not remove the need to secure music rights, monitor ingest health, or plan for outages and YouTube’s archive limit.
How do I run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with FFmpeg?
The basic path is media your server can access → FFmpeg → YouTube Live ingest. FFmpeg reads the audio and any accompanying visual, encodes the output, and sends it to the server URL using the stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The host must stay online for the stream to continue.
1. Check live-stream access
YouTube’s live-streaming help page says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s access in YouTube Studio before building an unattended setup. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
2. Create the stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream into your encoder configuration.
- Store the key in a restricted environment file or secret store, not in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the media formats, FFmpeg build, desired visual, and reconnect behavior, so do not assume one generic command is safe to paste unchanged.

3. Prepare media and encoding settings
Choose authorized audio and a visual input suitable for your stream. The image might be a still or video, but the selected inputs and encoders need to work together. Configure output to meet YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, then test before relying on it unattended. For a long music stream, make sure the media plan and repetition are intentional rather than assuming that looping a file solves every operational issue.
What bitrate should I use for a YouTube live stream?
Use the bitrate guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. Supported video codec options listed in the guidance include H.264, H.265, and AV1; the table below gives H.264 reference values.

These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest figures, not a measurement or guarantee of the upload capacity of an India-based home connection or VPS. How can I keep FFmpeg running on an Ubuntu server?
For an unattended setup, use an Ubuntu host that stays online and can sustain the required upload. A common pattern is to loop server-accessible media in FFmpeg and use a systemd service to start the process at boot and restart it after a process failure. At a high level, the service needs to read the chosen inputs, loop them when appropriate, encode compatible output, send it to the YouTube ingest URL with the private key, and make failures visible in logs. Configure the service to restart after a failed process, but recognize what that does and does not solve:
- A service manager can restart a crashed FFmpeg process; it cannot guarantee that the network path or YouTube ingest is available.
- Looping local files keeps the media input available; it does not ensure the stream reconnects correctly after an ingest interruption.
- A reconnect or restart may not preserve the same live event. Test this behavior and check both FFmpeg logs and YouTube Studio stream health.
Do not expose the stream key in command-line history or logs. Validate your actual input formats, FFmpeg build, key handling, and reconnection plan before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Can FFmpeg stream a looping playlist to YouTube?
Yes. FFmpeg can read media files and repeat inputs as part of a continuous output, and an Ubuntu service can keep that process running. Whether a playlist behaves as intended depends on how the inputs are arranged and whether the chosen formats and transitions suit the stream. Test the full sequence—including changes between tracks and recovery after a disconnect—before leaving it unattended. Repetition is only a playback mechanism; it does not clear rights to the tracks.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24/7 session producing a complete archive. Decide whether to use shorter sessions, create separate recordings, or run the stream without expecting a complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Can I play copyrighted music on a YouTube live stream if I have a license?
Only if the rights cover the intended live-stream use and territory, and even a license may not prevent an interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can trigger a warning, a placeholder image, an interruption, or termination. YouTube also says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review Copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses), and other royalty participants. “Free” online, purchased for another purpose, or licensed for an ordinary video does not automatically mean cleared for a live stream. Confirm rights for each recording and composition, territories, live use, monetization, and any allowlisting directly with rights holders or qualified counsel. YouTube’s Creator Music information describes availability for U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion beyond the U.S. pending, and says Creator Music tracks are not for live streams.
