To loop lofi audio into YouTube Live with FFmpeg, repeat a local media input, pace file playback in real time, encode a continuous audio-and-video feed, and send it to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The example below is a starting template—not a tested, universal profile—so verify the loop option on your installed FFmpeg build and test the feed before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A local video file containing both your lofi audio and a visual that can run continuously. If your audio and visual are separate files, you will need to map the intended streams explicitly and test how their durations and loop boundaries behave together.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay online and sustain the upload. A file-based source must be delivered at real-time pace rather than sent as fast as the computer can read it.
- A YouTube live event and its current stream URL and stream key, available in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Music and visuals you have the rights to use. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules; using a track without permission can lead to claims or other consequences under YouTube’s policies.
Verify FFmpeg’s loop option
The loop control is an input option, so it belongs before the -i for the file it should repeat. The commonly used option for an indefinite input loop is -stream_loop -1. FFmpeg’s option definitions can vary by build, and the current manual excerpt available for this guide does not establish its syntax; check the installed version before using it:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -h full
Confirm that the help output for your installed build supports -stream_loop and the -1 value. FFmpeg options are positional: input options go before their corresponding -i, while output options go before the output destination. The FFmpeg command-line documentation explains option placement and real-time input reading. Its -re option is equivalent to -readrate 1; it is useful for pacing file input, but should not be applied at a low read rate to an already-live capture or stream input because that can cause packet loss.
Send a looping file to YouTube Live
If one MP4 contains both the lofi track and the visual, use a command shaped like this after confirming the loop option. Replace the placeholder destination with the current RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for your event:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lofi_visual_with_audio.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a command verified against a particular file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube event. The video bitrate, frame rate, encoder preset, output format, and GOP values need to match your resolution, upload capacity, encoder support, and YouTube’s current recommendations. In particular, do not treat the example’s 3000 Kbps video bitrate or 30 fps as universal settings.
What the important options do
-repaces the file input at its native rate so the output is delivered in real time.-stream_loop -1requests indefinite repetition of the input, if supported by your installed build. It appears before-ibecause it applies to that input.-c:v libx264selects H.264 video encoding, and-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding.-g 60and-keyint_min 60set a 60-frame GOP in this example. At 30 fps, that is two seconds; if you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP to retain the desired interval.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset example video-rate controls. Choose values suitable for your actual output rather than copying them blindly.-b:a 128k -ar 44100sets the example audio encoding to 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvselects the container typically used for RTMP output.
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; its stereo audio guidance specifies 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not independent performance measurements. Consult the current guidance when choosing video settings, since the suitable video bitrate depends on output resolution and frame rate.

Use separate audio and visual files carefully
When the lofi track and visual are separate, make each input’s loop and stream selection explicit. Do not assume that a generic combination command will keep running correctly: mismatched durations, unsupported codecs, timestamps, or a visual input that ends can stop the output or trigger errors. The exact filter and shortest-stream behavior depends on how the inputs are composed and on your FFmpeg build.
- Check each file’s streams and duration before building the command. Confirm which input contains audio and which contains video.
- Use the appropriate input options before each matching
-i, and use explicit-mapoptions to select the audio and video streams you intend to send. - Choose a loop arrangement that keeps both intended streams available for the full output. Do not rely on unspecified automatic stream selection or assume that one input’s end will be handled as you want.
- Run a short private or unlisted test and inspect the transition at the loop boundary. Confirm that audio does not drop out, repeat with a gap, or drift from the visual.
Because the correct filter and duration handling depend on the files, there is no single separate-input command that can be presented as guaranteed without testing it on your target FFmpeg version.

Connect FFmpeg to the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, create or select your live event and open the Live Control Room.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key, then use them as the FFmpeg output destination. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find the connection details.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots or public command history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder command.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health information. Start the event as appropriate for its auto-start configuration, then check that the video is continuous and audio is present.
- Watch Live Control Room health while the broadcast runs. YouTube identifies problems such as incorrect format or codec, bitrate, and keyframe frequency; correct the corresponding encoder settings if it reports an error.
YouTube Help explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative audio and moving video, not just a static preview, and watch the event’s stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s live encoder settings page and its stream health guidance.
Keep the feed running and preserve the archive
With this local FFmpeg method, the computer, process, and internet connection all need to remain available for the broadcast. If the process stops or the connection fails, the outgoing feed can stop; a reliable always-on setup therefore needs monitoring and a recovery plan. A VPS is one possible deployment route, but it adds hosting cost and operational work, including process supervision, upload capacity, and access to your media files. It is not a YouTube requirement.

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer broadcast will be fully archived. If preserving the entire run matters, check YouTube’s current policy and consider keeping a local recording or dividing the broadcast into shorter events.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg rejects -stream_loop or exits before connecting |
The installed build may not support the option or value as entered, or the input path may be wrong. | Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h full; confirm the option precedes the intended -i and the file exists. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The destination URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the event may not be selected/configured as expected. | Copy the current URL and key from the event’s Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, reset it and update FFmpeg. |
| YouTube reports a format, codec, bitrate, or keyframe error | One or more output settings do not match its current live guidance. | Use the Live Control Room error details and YouTube’s current encoder settings. Check CBR, the keyframe interval, supported audio encoding, and resolution-appropriate video bitrate. |
| The audio loops but the visual ends, or the output stops | Separate inputs have different durations, loop behavior, or end-of-stream handling. | Explicitly map intended streams and test the combined output and loop boundary in a short private or unlisted event before a longer run. |
| Audio or video stutters during a local-file broadcast | The machine or upload may not sustain the chosen output, or a live input may have been incorrectly rate-limited. | Check system and network capacity, reduce output settings if appropriate, and reserve -re for file-based real-time playback rather than applying a low read rate to an already-live input. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs a looping uploaded video online without keeping a home computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.
