There is no official RAM minimum for running a 24/7 nature stream on a VPS. If the VPS only relays an already encoded feed, 2 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point to test—not a guaranteed minimum. If it also runs OBS, builds scenes, applies filters, or transcodes video, its needs depend on that workload. Measure the actual setup before settling on an instance.
First decide whether the VPS relays or processes the video
Relay: forward an encoded stream
A relay receives video that has already been encoded and forwards it without decoding and re-encoding. FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode copies input packets without decoding or encoding; it can suit simple forwarding or container changes, but cannot apply frame filters. For this design, 2 GB RAM is a sensible initial test size, with room left for the operating system and monitoring. It is an estimate, not a published requirement for nature streams. FFmpeg documentation
Processing: compose, filter, or transcode
Running OBS to build scenes, add browser sources or filters, or render overlays adds work beyond forwarding. Transcoding also decodes and re-encodes the video; FFmpeg describes this as computationally expensive in most cases. These workloads can shift the main constraint toward CPU or hardware-encoder availability as well as memory. OBS notes that scene complexity, sources, filters, resolution, and frame rate affect rendering and encoding performance. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
What to check when choosing a VPS
- Usable RAM: allow room for the operating system, streaming process, and monitoring; use observed peak memory to decide whether the instance has adequate headroom.
- CPU allocation and sustained performance: important if the VPS transcodes or renders scenes. OBS says CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity.
- Hardware encoding: OBS can use supported hardware encoders to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Do not assume a VPS exposes a suitable encoder; verify it for the instance you intend to use. OBS hardware encoding
- Network allowance and egress: a relay receives and sends the stream, so account for both directions and any provider transfer charges. OBS’s SRT/RIST guide advises considering roughly twice the video-stream bandwidth for proxy traffic; this is bandwidth guidance, not a RAM requirement. OBS SRT/RIST guide
- Storage: include it if the VPS will keep recordings or source files; a forwarding-only setup may have different storage needs.
- Operations: look for monitoring and restart controls, and decide how the stream should reconnect after a process or connection failure.
How to size and validate the instance
- Choose the workload. Confirm whether the VPS only forwards an already encoded feed or also runs OBS, renders a scene, applies filters, or transcodes.
- For a stream-copy relay, test a modest instance. Start with 2 GB RAM as an estimate, not a minimum. Run the actual feed and monitor peak memory, CPU, network throughput, and dropped or reconnected streams.
- Test the full processing workload if applicable. Use the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, sources, filters, encoder, and destination. Increase capacity based on measured behavior rather than assuming that a RAM increase alone will fix instability.
- Run a representative continuous test. Observe the service long enough to capture its normal workload and likely interruptions. Keep operational headroom and a restart or reconnect strategy based on what you observe; the cited documentation does not specify a guaranteed buffer or 24/7 uptime target.
- Recheck after changes. A new overlay, filter, resolution, frame rate, or encoding mode changes the workload. Repeat the test before treating the old VPS size as sufficient.
Why RAM may not be the limiting resource
For stream copy, FFmpeg avoids decoding and encoding, so the relay does not do the same work as a transcoder. With OBS or transcoding, CPU, GPU encoder availability, and scene-rendering load may be more important than RAM. Network capacity is a separate constraint: a relay must receive and send the stream, and bandwidth requirements should not be mistaken for memory requirements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully. Its published system-requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, does not provide a RAM threshold for this VPS workload. OBS system requirements
Common sizing problems and fixes
- Memory use rises or the process is stopped: check peak memory during the actual stream and leave more room for the operating system and monitoring. If the VPS also runs OBS or transcodes, test that complete workload rather than sizing it like a relay.
- Encoding or rendering falls behind: inspect CPU use, encoder choice, scene complexity, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm whether the instance provides a supported hardware encoder before relying on one.
- The stream drops or reconnects: check network throughput and the relay’s restart and reconnect behavior alongside memory. A RAM increase does not by itself resolve a network or recovery problem.
- The relay is undersized despite low memory use: examine CPU performance and receive-and-send network capacity. OBS’s approximate twice-the-stream-bandwidth guidance applies to relay traffic, not to RAM.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your nature video is a pre-recorded video for a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining your own VPS process: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops the upload, supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
