If your Restream-to-YouTube stream keeps dropping, first find out which connection is failing: your encoder-to-Restream feed, Restream’s YouTube destination, or the network between them. Then adjust the relevant settings or authorization rather than changing everything at once. This guide walks through that diagnosis, the encoder and network checks, and ways to reduce dead air while you recover.
Identify what is disconnecting
At the next drop, note the time and any error message, then check each point in the route:
- Encoder or source: Does your encoder report a network disconnect or stop sending?
- Restream ingest: Does Restream stop receiving your incoming stream?
- YouTube destination: Does Restream show a problem with YouTube while the incoming stream remains present?
- YouTube Studio: Does Studio still show an incoming stream, or has it disappeared?
These observations help narrow the cause; a dashboard status by itself does not prove which component failed.
Compare with a direct YouTube stream
If possible, test the same encoder and network by streaming directly to YouTube without Restream. Restream recommends a direct test when a YouTube stream will not start. If direct streaming also fails, investigate the encoder, local network, or broader connection. If it is stable, focus on the Restream ingest, YouTube channel connection, or route between your setup and Restream. A direct test is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular fault.

Match encoder settings to the connection
Check the encoder’s output format and bitrate before changing more complicated settings. Restream’s YouTube setup guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a resolution from 240p to 2160p, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second recommended keyframe interval (4 seconds maximum). Its overall YouTube bitrate range is 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. See Restream’s YouTube setup guide.
Use a bitrate suited to resolution and frame rate
Restream publishes these YouTube encoder bitrate recommendations. They are targets, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them.
| Output | Restream recommendation |
|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These resolution-specific figures come from Restream’s YouTube bitrate recommendations. For Restream Studio, the same article lists 6 Mbps at 1080p/30, 5 Mbps at 720p/60, and 4 Mbps at 720p/30; Studio adjusts bitrate according to the selected resolution.

Leave headroom for upload-speed variation
Restream advises keeping encoder bitrate at no more than half the available upload speed. Under that rule of thumb, a connection measuring 10 Mbps upload corresponds to a maximum encoder bitrate of 5 Mbps. Upload speed can vary, and one speed test does not show whether the route will remain stable throughout a broadcast. If your chosen target is too close to or above the available upload capacity, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
Recommended Free Tools
Restream’s general encoder guide gives baseline ranges of 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p/30 and 4,500–6,000 Kbps for 1080p/30, alongside H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Those general starting points are presented differently from its YouTube-specific table; use the YouTube-specific recommendations when choosing an output for YouTube, while ensuring the connection can carry it. See Restream’s general encoder settings guide.
Check network stability and routing
Test a wired connection
If your computer or encoder and router support it, try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Restream recommends a wired connection where possible. This can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix an ISP outage, upstream routing problem, encoder misconfiguration, or issue on the destination side. If you are on Wi-Fi now, a suitable Ethernet cable may let you test this change; no particular cable category is established as necessary.

Review firewall rules on managed networks
On a school, office, venue, or other managed network, ask the administrator to check whether its firewall or security gateway permits the services required for your streaming mode. Restream lists *.restream.io and these ports for the corresponding functions:
| Port | Restream function |
|---|---|
| 443 | Web content/HTML5 HLS and WebSockets |
| 1935 | RTMP/RTMPS encoders |
| UDP 2010 | SRT encoders |
| UDP 3478/3479 | Restream Studio broadcasting |
Requirements depend on how you send the stream. Use Restream’s network requirements to identify the relevant mode rather than opening every port without checking.
Investigate a suspected route problem
Restream describes traceroute as a way to inspect route hops and delays. Its guidance suggests live.restream.io for automatic detection or a specific Restream server hostname where applicable. Asterisks in traceroute output can mean a hop did not respond; that alone does not establish that the hop caused a stream drop.

If the route suggests a connection issue, Restream’s suggested next steps include contacting your ISP about line or routing problems, lowering bitrate, using a wired connection, and restarting the router or modem. Follow Restream’s traceroute guidance for the applicable procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconnect the correct YouTube channel
If only YouTube appears affected, verify that Restream is connected to the intended Google account and YouTube channel. Restream’s troubleshooting flow recommends removing and re-adding the channel if needed and describes resetting the YouTube stream key during reconnection. Follow the current dashboard prompts carefully: after resetting a key, update the encoder credentials if the new key is required there. See Restream’s YouTube connection troubleshooting steps.
A YouTube live event created through the YouTube mobile app is not supported for going live through Restream because that event is locked to mobile streaming. If that applies, check your event and stream settings or test directly on YouTube instead.

Reduce dead air while recovering
Use Disconnect Protection when eligible
Restream Disconnect Protection can play a fallback video if an RTMP or SRT source drops. Restream says it requires a Business or custom Enterprise plan, must be configured before going live, and offers fallback windows of 5, 15, or 30 minutes. If the source reconnects within the selected window, the live feed resumes; if the window expires first, the stream ends and must be restarted. The fallback can reduce dead air, but it does not repair the encoder, source, or network problem. See Restream’s Disconnect Protection guide.
Consider a backup stream for higher-stakes broadcasts
Restream also documents a backup-stream option. It recommends using separate network connections for primary and backup sources to reduce the chance that a single connection failure affects both. A backup adds setup and operating complexity, so it may be unnecessary for a casual stream. See Restream’s backup-stream guide.
Common symptoms and next steps
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The encoder reports a disconnect or stops sending | Check upload stability, bitrate, encoder output, and Wi-Fi versus Ethernet. |
| Restream stops receiving the source | Inspect the encoder-to-Restream route, relevant firewall rules, and any available route diagnostics. |
| The incoming feed remains, but YouTube is the only destination affected | Confirm the Google account and channel, then follow Restream’s channel reconnection and stream-key recovery flow. |
| A direct YouTube test also drops | Investigate the encoder or broader network rather than assuming the Restream relay is the cause. |
| Traceroute shows asterisks | Treat them as non-responses, not proof of a faulty hop; consider ISP or routing support if other evidence points that way. |
| A mobile-created YouTube live event will not work through Restream | Use a supported event setup and check the YouTube stream settings, or test directly on YouTube. |
