YouTube Studio schedules events; it does not provide a built-in playlist that automatically rotates prerecorded episodes forever. For a single persistent live page, you can run a continuous feed and start separate broadcasts from it—but distinct episode pages and archives generally call for separate broadcasts.
Choose how episodes should appear to viewers
YouTube uses two related building blocks: a liveBroadcast is the event and video viewers watch, while a liveStream is the incoming audiovisual feed sent by your encoder. Google’s official API guide puts it simply: “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” A stream configuration can be reused for multiple broadcasts when the encoder setup is the same.
| Approach | What viewers get | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | One persistent live page with episodes played in sequence. | A radio-style channel where one live URL matters more than separate episode pages. | Episodes aired inside the continuous broadcast are not automatically separate broadcasts or archives. |
| Separate scheduled broadcasts | A distinct scheduled event and watch page for each episode. | Episodes need their own title, description, reminder, or distinct event identity. | You must create and manage each event and arrange the feed transitions. |
| Continuous feed plus separate broadcasts | An always-running incoming feed can be used to start individual broadcasts. | A recurring show that wants separate event pages while keeping the encoder feed available. | Requires coordination between event scheduling and the playback/encoder automation. |
The YouTube Live Streaming API documents reusable stream settings and the pattern of a 24/7 feed with separate broadcasts started from that feed. Which arrangement is right depends on whether you value one persistent URL, distinct episode pages, or both.
Schedule and prepare an episode broadcast
- Choose the broadcast pattern. Decide whether you need one ongoing live event, separate scheduled events, or a continuous feed that supplies individual broadcasts. For recurring episodes using the same encoder setup, YouTube’s API documentation describes reusing the stream configuration.
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, select Manage, then Schedule Stream. Add the episode’s event details and choose public, private, or unlisted visibility. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, with a Notify me option for viewers.
- Connect the encoder. In the encoder, enter YouTube’s Live server URL and the stream key for the event or reusable stream configuration. The server URL routes the feed; the key identifies the feed to YouTube. Treat the key as a password. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it and update the encoder.
- Queue the episode content. Set up the episode files in your encoder or a compatible playback-automation system, in the intended order. Add any transitions or interstitials you want between episodes. YouTube’s documentation explains events and incoming feeds, but does not specify an episode-playlist tool; confirm that any playback product you choose supports playlists, scheduling, and unattended operation.
- Test before the announced start. Start a test feed and check the Studio preview, event title and description, visibility, picture, sound, and captions if used. Start the encoder when ready, then follow Studio’s control flow or use configured auto-start behavior. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop controls; its API reference describes auto-start when streaming begins and auto-stop around one minute after the feed ends.
- Decide how you will publish archives. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that episodes inside one uninterrupted stream will each receive their own archive. Use separate broadcasts or upload episode videos separately if distinct episode pages and archives are important.
One stream key for every scheduled episode?
Not universally. YouTube supports reusable stream settings and custom reusable keys, and its API supports associating one stream with multiple broadcasts under the documented conditions. Reuse is appropriate when the encoder configuration is the same; the broadcast remains the event viewers watch. If the setup changes, or you are unsure which stream is associated with an event, check the stream assignment in Studio rather than assuming every scheduled episode should use the same key.

Keep the show running without a home computer
For a do-it-yourself setup, the encoder or playback automation must remain available to send the queued episodes. A scheduled YouTube event alone does not play the files. If you use a home computer, plan for power, internet reliability, and unattended playback; if you use a cloud service or other automation, verify its playlist and scheduling behavior before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or compare plan lengths. Start your free day on StreamNeo.

Common scheduling problems and fixes
- The scheduled page is live, but no episode is playing: Scheduling creates the event; it does not supply the audiovisual feed. Start the encoder and confirm the correct episode is queued.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the encoder has the correct Live server URL and stream key, and that the selected stream is associated with the scheduled broadcast. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The wrong episode or order appears: Check the playback queue or automation schedule. YouTube’s event scheduling does not define episode order.
- Viewers cannot find the upcoming event: Recheck the event’s visibility and schedule details in Live Control Room. Public scheduled streams may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds; private or unlisted visibility changes who can access them.
- There is no separate archive for each episode: If episodes aired inside one continuous broadcast, YouTube does not thereby create a separate broadcast for every segment. Schedule separate broadcasts or publish individual episode videos when separate pages are required.
- The feed stops when playback ends: Review the encoder’s auto-stop configuration and the playback system’s end-of-queue behavior. YouTube documents auto-stop around one minute after streaming ends; an ongoing show needs the feed and playback automation to continue supplying content.
