How to Loop a Nature Video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg in India

You can loop a prerecorded nature video into YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on a computer or server, repeating the local file as its input, and sending the output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Your channel must be eligible for live streaming, the upload connection must sustain the chosen bitrate, and you should test the feed before relying on it. The setup below is for encoder-based streaming—not broadcasting live camera footage.

Before you start: YouTube eligibility and the footage

  • Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel and complete any verification YouTube requests. YouTube also requires that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Have FFmpeg installed on a computer or remote server that can stay online for the broadcast. You need a stable upload connection with enough sustained bandwidth for the stream.
  • Use footage and audio you own, or confirm that the relevant rights permit public livestreaming, in your territory, for the intended duration and monetization. Check third-party music, sound effects, and visuals as well as the video itself.

In India, the Copyright Act, 1957 includes visual recordings and accompanying sound recordings within its definition of a cinematograph film, and describes communication to the public broadly. This is a practical rights reminder, not legal advice or a complete account of Indian copyright exceptions; see the Copyright Office of India’s Copyright Act materials. Labels such as “nature,” “royalty-free,” or “public domain” do not by themselves establish that a particular recording is cleared for your stream.

Create the YouTube encoder stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. In Live Control Room, create or select a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides it. Do not paste the key into a public post, screenshot, or shared script: it functions like a password. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  3. Keep the URL and key available to the FFmpeg process without making them publicly visible. Avoid saving a command containing the key in a public repository or sharing terminal output that reveals it.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder ingestion. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Prepare a looping FFmpeg command

FFmpeg can read a local media file and write encoded output to a streaming URL. The -stream_loop input option repeats the input; a value of -1 requests indefinite looping. FFmpeg options are positional, so put input options before the corresponding -i, and output options after it. The example below is a template, not a tested universal command: confirm the option syntax and RTMPS behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and the media file you plan to stream.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/nature-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-YOUTUBE-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"

Replace the file path and the RTMPS destination with the values for your system and stream. Do not publish a command after substituting your actual stream key. This example requests H.264 video at 30 fps, a 4 Mbps video rate, a two-second GOP/keyframe interval, and AAC audio. The settings are an illustrative SDR starting point; they are not a guarantee that every source file, connection, or FFmpeg build will work unchanged.

Choose a bitrate and frame rate your connection can sustain

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not universal guarantees. Choose a resolution and rate that the source supports and your measured upload bandwidth can sustain continuously, with headroom for network variation. The example uses the 4 Mbps recommendation; if you change frame rate or resolution, adjust the encoder settings accordingly and check YouTube’s current table before going live.

The command uses -re to read the file at approximately real-time speed rather than sending it as fast as possible. Its -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 values correspond to a two-second interval at 30 fps. If you choose another frame rate, recalculate the GOP interval so keyframes remain about two seconds apart and no more than four seconds apart.

Re-encode or stream-copy?

The example re-encodes video and audio, which lets you request compatible output settings but uses CPU. Stream-copying can avoid re-encoding work when the source codecs and stream parameters are already suitable, but the source may not match the settings you need. Inspect the file’s codecs and properties, then validate the result in Live Control Room; neither choice is right for every input.

Start, test, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Run the command in a terminal on the machine that will remain connected. Watch for FFmpeg errors and confirm that the process continues to report output rather than exiting.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that both moving video and audio are present. If you want to check the setup without a public audience, use a private or unlisted stream where those visibility options are available.
  3. Monitor the machine, FFmpeg process, and network for the duration you intend to broadcast. If the process exits or the connection fails, the feed can stop; this command does not provide a validated automatic restart or failover mechanism.
  4. When finished, stop FFmpeg deliberately and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a complete archive for an indefinite stream or one lasting 12 hours or longer.

Copyright checks for a nature livestream

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its copyright guidance for live streams says a stream may be replaced by a placeholder or interrupted or terminated if matching content is detected. A license from a rights holder does not necessarily prevent that interruption: YouTube says the channel may need to be added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist.

Potential safe-use routes include permission, applicable Creative Commons terms or exceptions, and material from YouTube Audio Library or Creator Music, but YouTube warns that none guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. Review the specific terms for every component of your video and arrange allowlisting with the rights holder where appropriate. See YouTube’s copyright overview.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that live streaming is enabled, the channel is eligible, and the RTMPS URL and key match the selected encoder stream. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
  • FFmpeg exits immediately: Verify that the input path is correct and readable, the installed build supports the selected encoders and options, and the RTMPS destination is complete. FFmpeg’s documentation explains its command-line input/output model and option order.
  • Video appears but audio is missing: Check whether the input has an audio track and whether FFmpeg reports an audio-encoding error. If there is no audio track, the command cannot produce source audio; decide whether silence is acceptable and test the chosen output before broadcasting.
  • Stream health is poor or the image stalls: Reduce the bitrate or resolution, confirm the connection can sustain the chosen upload rate, and inspect the machine’s CPU load if re-encoding. A static nature scene does not have a special YouTube bitrate rule in the encoder recommendations.
  • The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the flagged material and its license. If you have permission, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; permission alone may not stop an automated interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or home connection to run FFmpeg throughout the broadcast, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option for uploaded recordings and playlists. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
