Restore your internet, check the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then restart the encoder with the correct YouTube stream URL and current stream key. Wait until the Live Control Room preview shows the feed before treating the stream as recovered. You do not need to buy new equipment just to try this recovery workflow.
Reconnect the existing YouTube Live event
This applies to a podcast broadcast sent to YouTube Live from an encoder. YouTube’s documented connection process is the same for podcasts as for other encoder-based streams; it does not describe a separate podcast recovery path.
-
Restore and verify outbound internet
Confirm that the computer or streaming device has internet access. Then test upload speed: a connection that can load websites or download quickly may still be unable to send a live feed reliably. YouTube recommends choosing a stream quality your connection can sustain and leaving bandwidth headroom. If upload problems continue, contact your internet service provider. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips cover these checks.
-
Check the event’s status and stream health
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room and select the event. Read its status and any stream-health error messages. The preview is the practical confirmation that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. The event’s status matters: if YouTube shows that it has ended or cannot accept the feed, do not assume the same event can be resumed; use the controls shown in Live Control Room to create or manage a stream as needed. YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions describe the Live Control Room flow.

-
Check the encoder destination and stream key
Make sure the encoder is configured for the intended YouTube stream URL and the current stream key shown for that event in Live Control Room. The URL and key tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. If the encoder reports a startup or key error, copy the key from Live Control Room into the encoder and retry. Do not reset a key reflexively after an outage: YouTube describes resetting as appropriate for cases such as a compromised key, while its troubleshooting instructions advise copying the current key when an encoder cannot start.
-
Resume sending and wait for the preview
Start or resume the encoder’s output. Watch both its own status and the Live Control Room preview. If the preview returns, confirm that video and audio are present and the stream health is acceptable before telling listeners that the broadcast is back.

If it still will not reconnect
Check the encoder’s error output, confirm the selected audio/video sources and routing, and update the encoder if appropriate. Recheck outbound upload connectivity and the URL/key pair. If the event is ended or remains unable to accept the feed, follow the options shown in Live Control Room rather than repeatedly assuming that the interrupted event is resumable.
What an outage does—and does not—guarantee
YouTube’s official guidance explains encoder setup, stream keys, network troubleshooting, and preview monitoring, but it does not specify a universal reconnection timeout or promise that every event interrupted by an outage can resume. It also does not guarantee that reconnecting preserves the same live-event URL, audience session, or archive. Use the actual event status in Live Control Room to decide what to do next.

Prevent the next connection drop from becoming a stream failure
Leave upload headroom
YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% between the stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth; this is guidance, not a measured guarantee. Its streaming tips warn, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” If the connection fluctuates, lower the stream quality to a level it can sustain rather than targeting the highest available setting.
Use settings matched to the stream
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the actual format. As one example, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; those figures are not universal requirements for every podcast stream. YouTube also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; using RTMPS does not itself recover a feed after an outage.

Consider backup connectivity only if your situation warrants it
A wired connection, backup mobile internet, or power backup may help in a particular setup, but none is a universally required purchase for reconnecting. Backup service availability, data caps, and upload performance vary by location and provider. First identify whether the failure is the network, encoder, stream configuration, or event state.
