A 24/7 YouTube podcast stream can use anywhere from about 21.6 GB to 2,952 GB (about 2.95 TB) in a 30-day month, depending mainly on the playback quality. At 144p, the published estimate projects to 21.6–64.8 GB per month; at 1080p, it projects to 1,800–2,952 GB. These are planning estimates, not guaranteed YouTube usage figures: bitrate, frame rate, buffering and app behavior all affect the actual total.

Estimated data use by playback quality

The hourly estimates below are reported by Android Authority. The daily and monthly figures are calculations from those hourly ranges: hourly use multiplied by 24 hours or 720 hours, respectively. The monthly column assumes a 30-day month.

Playback quality Estimated per hour Estimated per 24 hours Estimated per 30 days
144p 30–90 MB 0.72–2.16 GB 21.6–64.8 GB
240p 180–250 MB 4.32–6 GB 129.6–180 GB
360p 300–450 MB 7.2–10.8 GB 216–324 GB
480p 480–660 MB 11.52–15.84 GB 345.6–475.2 GB
720p 1.2–2.7 GB 28.8–64.8 GB 864–1,944 GB
1080p 2.5–4.1 GB 60–98.4 GB 1,800–2,952 GB

These figures show why a mostly audio-led podcast can still consume substantial data if its video is left playing continuously. Even the lowest listed quality projects to tens of gigabytes per month. The high end is not an expected result for every stream; it reflects the reported range, not a fixed amount for each resolution. Android Authority’s estimates and explanation describe YouTube use as variable rather than constant.

Why your actual total may differ

Resolution is only one factor

Higher playback quality generally uses more data, but resolution alone does not determine the stream’s bitrate. Two streams at the same resolution can use different amounts, and frame rate and encoding also matter.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Buffering and content affect downloads

YouTube may download video in chunks and preload some material ahead of playback. As a result, data use may not correspond exactly to the time you actively watched. Android Authority reports that live-stream use in its testing was roughly comparable to a video at the same resolution and frame rate; that is not a guarantee for every stream.

Creator bitrate guidance is not a viewer data calculator

YouTube’s official live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations are for sending a creator’s stream to YouTube. Its recommended upload encoding settings are also creator-side guidance. Neither table directly predicts how much data a viewer’s phone or broadband connection will use.

Indian provider estimates are broad context, not YouTube-specific figures

Jio’s India-facing guidance gives general video estimates of up to 0.3 GB per hour for low quality, 0.7 GB for medium, 1 GB for high, 3 GB for HD and 7 GB for Ultra HD. Jio says usage varies by app or website, including YouTube, so these bands should not be treated as measurements for a YouTube podcast. Jio’s video-resolution guidance provides that provider-level context.

How to reduce data use and estimate your own stream

  1. Lower playback quality. In the YouTube app, select a lower resolution for the stream or choose Data Saver when watching over mobile data. The available controls and labels can vary by app version and device.
  2. Measure a representative period. Check YouTube’s mobile or cellular data use in your phone’s settings after watching for a few hours. Menu names vary by Android or iOS version and device; Astound’s device-level checking guidance offers general steps.
  3. Project from your measurement. Divide the observed data by the hours watched to estimate an hourly rate, then multiply by your planned daily hours or by 720 for a 30-day, all-day schedule. Treat the result as an estimate because the stream and buffering behavior can change.
  4. Check your connection’s allowance and terms. Confirm the current data limit and any relevant conditions with your mobile or broadband provider; allowances vary by plan.
