To loop a prerecorded video through Switchboard Live, set the repeat option on an OBS Media Source, then send OBS’s feed to Switchboard and start the YouTube destination. Switchboard relays the incoming stream; it does not store or loop the video file for you.
What you need before you start
- A prerecorded video file and a computer that can play it through OBS.
- An OBS scene containing a Media Source for that file. Switchboard’s OBS walkthrough also explains how to connect OBS to its workflow: Connecting Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) to Switchboard.
- A Switchboard workflow with a YouTube destination connected. Switchboard’s FAQ says prerecorded video works through an encoder that can play the file, and that Switchboard does not store the video; its documented ingest protocol is RTMP. The FAQ lists OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as encoder examples: Switchboard FAQ.
- YouTube live streaming enabled on your channel. Switchboard’s activation guidance says phone verification may be required and activation can take up to 24 hours; this is vendor guidance, not a guaranteed wait time for every account. See Connecting YouTube to Switchboard Connect.
Set up the video loop in OBS
- Add the file: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source, select the prerecorded video, and confirm it appears in the preview.
- Enable repeat: Open the Media Source properties and check its repeat/loop option. The exact checkbox wording can vary by OBS version. This is the control that repeats playback; Switchboard is not the player.
- Check playback: Start or preview the source and make sure video and audio behave as intended. If the source is hidden behind another scene item, move it above the covering item in the Sources list.
A local file does not require a capture card. Use OBS’s Video Capture Device source only if you are bringing in an external camera or other capture-device feed; the hardware needed for an HDMI source depends on the computer and equipment.
Connect OBS to Switchboard and YouTube
- Prepare the YouTube destination: In Switchboard, connect the YouTube destination to the relevant Stream Group or workflow. If you need to authorize YouTube first, use Switchboard’s connection guidance linked above.
- Copy the workflow credentials: In OBS, go to Settings → Stream. Set Service to Custom, then enter the Stream URL and Stream Key provided for the Switchboard workflow. Copy each value exactly and keep the key private.
- Send the feed: Click Start Streaming in OBS. Confirm the video reaches the Switchboard confidence monitor and that its receiving indicator is green.
- Start the destination: Once the incoming feed is confirmed, start the YouTube destination in Switchboard. Check that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the correct video is playing.
- Verify the result: Open the YouTube viewing link in a separate browser or device and check playback before sharing it more widely.
Choose the YouTube visibility and event type
Public, unlisted, or private
Choose visibility deliberately in the YouTube destination settings. Switchboard documents public, unlisted, and private options in its guide, How to change the visibility of your live video. Unlisted means anyone with the link can view the stream; it is not access control. Private is the restricted option, subject to YouTube’s current rules for eligible viewers.
Regular destination or scheduled YouTube event
For a regular stream, the workflow above sends the OBS feed to the connected YouTube destination. A scheduled event can require a separate event-specific stream URL and key, plus coordination with YouTube Live Control Room. Switchboard’s scheduled-event guide describes adding those credentials as a custom RTMP destination: How to create a scheduled YouTube Event and Go Live with Switchboard. That guide is about a year old as of October 3, 2026; check the current Switchboard and YouTube interfaces for the event’s exact steps and capabilities.

Check copyright and YouTube rules before leaving a loop live
A video playing repeatedly is still a YouTube live stream. Use footage, music, and other material you have permission to stream, and make sure your planned use complies with YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Repeating content does not itself establish that you own the rights or that a channel qualifies for monetization. Review the relevant YouTube rules in Studio before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot a loop that will not reach YouTube
- The video does not repeat: Reopen the OBS Media Source properties and confirm its repeat/loop option is enabled. Also verify that the source is visible in the active scene.
- OBS is streaming but Switchboard shows no incoming video: Check that OBS uses Custom service and that both the workflow Stream URL and Stream Key were copied correctly. Confirm OBS is actually sending, then check the Switchboard receiving indicator and confidence monitor.
- Switchboard receives the feed but YouTube is not live: Confirm the YouTube destination is connected to the right workflow and has been started. For an event, verify that the event-specific credentials and Live Control Room steps match the scheduled event.
- You cannot enable YouTube live streaming: Complete the channel verification steps shown by YouTube. Switchboard’s guidance notes activation can take up to 24 hours, so an newly enabled channel may not be ready immediately.
- The stream is visible to the wrong audience: Check the destination’s visibility before sharing its link. Unlisted links can be passed along; use private visibility when restricted access is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep going without leaving your computer on, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
