Set levels at the microphone or interface first, balance each source separately in your streaming software, use gentle compression to tame unusually loud speech, and place a limiter last as a peak guard. Then record or run an unlisted test with representative audio and listen back. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify an integrated loudness target for live streams, so there is no official YouTube Live LUFS number to aim for.
Build a consistent signal before it reaches YouTube
Audio passes through several stages: the microphone or other source, any interface or mixer, the streaming software, and YouTube. Set and check each stage in that order. Raising a quiet software fader may make the meter move, but it cannot remove noise or distortion already introduced at the source.
Start with the microphone and room
- Use a quiet room and keep a steady distance from the microphone. Moving closer and farther away changes the level before software processing can help.
- Set the input gain on the microphone, interface, or mixer. OBS recommends adjusting gain at the device—including a microphone gain control or mixer input gain—before fine-tuning levels in OBS.
- Speak at the loudest level you expect during the show while setting gain. Include excited speech, laughter, and interruptions in the check; ordinary conversational speech alone may not reveal peaks.
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends testing audio and using a microphone. Its equipment guidance notes that advanced arrangements can include multiple microphones and a mixer. A separate interface or mixer is useful when you need controllable gain or independent inputs, but it is not a prerequisite for every setup.
Balance speech, music, game audio, and guests
Adjust each source independently before changing the master output. In OBS, use the Audio Mixer to balance the microphone against music, game sound, alerts, or remote callers. OBS’s mixer guidance places speech in the upper yellow region and background music or alerts in the green. Treat these as practical meter references, not a universal loudness specification.

The main OBS meter bar shows peak volume—the loudest signal level—not integrated loudness over the whole show. A smaller moving marker is a VU-style indicator that averages level over a short interval and can help you judge the apparent strength of speech. The peak-hold indicator can help reveal the loudest recent moment. These readings answer different questions; neither is an integrated LUFS measurement.
- Keep digital audio below 0 dBFS. Reaching or exceeding that ceiling can cause clipping distortion.
- Listen to the mic and other sources through OBS monitoring while you adjust them. A meter will not tell you whether a voice sounds harsh, a room echoes, or one side of a stereo connection is missing.
- If viewers need to hear the host over game audio or music, lower those background sources rather than pushing the microphone toward clipping.
Use compression and limiting for different jobs
Compression: reduce the gap between normal and loud speech
An OBS Compressor filter reduces signals above its threshold. Its controls include threshold, ratio, attack, release, and output gain. Compression can make a host’s level less variable, but it cannot fix a clipped input, a noisy room, or poor microphone placement. Start gently, listen for natural-sounding speech, and adjust to the voice and source level; there is no single suitable threshold for every podcast.

Limiting: catch peaks at the end of the chain
A limiter prevents peaks from exceeding its threshold. OBS says the limiter should be the last filter in the chain. Its default threshold is -6 dB, but that is a software default, not a required target for every stream. Choose a ceiling that leaves practical headroom and confirm the result by listening to loud passages.
Do not use either filter to compensate for a bad source level. If the mic is too quiet or distorted before processing, correct the gain or source problem first; processing later in the chain cannot undo damage already present.

Run a representative test and monitor the actual stream
- Rehearse the full format. Include typical speech, the loudest likely moments, guest interruptions, music or game-audio transitions, and remote callers if you use them.
- Record a normal session in OBS. Listen to the recording before the event. OBS recommends recording a normal session and playing it back so you can assess what the mix actually sounds like.
- Test the YouTube output. YouTube recommends testing before going live and using audio representative of the real stream. An unlisted test stream lets you check the YouTube preview or playback on a second device where practical.
- During the show, watch and listen. Watch for peak levels and source balance, but use your ears as well. A meter cannot reveal every problem, including room echo, harshness, or a disconnected stereo channel.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate as technical encoder settings. These are not loudness targets. Follow the applicable YouTube encoder settings for your stream, and do not confuse delivery format with the perceived level of the mix.
LUFS numbers: useful context, not a YouTube Live rule
YouTube’s current encoder guidance does not state an integrated loudness target for YouTube Live. In particular, -14 LUFS should not be presented as an official live-stream requirement.

A different reference is the Audio Engineering Society’s 2021 Technical Document TD1008, which recommends -18 LUFS for speech and -16 LUFS for music when the two are normalized separately for internet audio streaming. Its distribution examples also include -18 LUFS for news/talk, -17 LUFS for mixed format, and -16 LUFS for pop music. These are AES recommendations for internet streaming and on-demand distribution—not YouTube-specific live encoder thresholds. Apply them as context only, not as a substitute for checking your live mix.
OBS documentation also describes a -20 dBFS alignment level and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum meter level. Those figures explain OBS meter conventions; they are not prescribed speech targets for every stream.

Common level problems and what to check
| What you notice | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Speech sounds distorted even after lowering the OBS fader | The microphone, interface, or mixer may be clipping before the software stage. | Reduce gain at the source device, then listen and watch the OBS meter again. A compressor cannot repair clipping introduced earlier. |
| Voice level swings between quiet and loud | Mic distance, source gain, and speaking dynamics may be changing. | Keep microphone distance steady, set source gain during a loud rehearsal, then try moderate compression on speech and listen back. |
| Music or game audio overwhelms the host | Separate sources may not be balanced against each other. | Lower the background source in the mixer and recheck speech and transitions in a recording. |
| Meters look safe, but the recording sounds harsh or echoey | Meters show level, not room acoustics or every sound-quality issue. | Check the room and microphone placement, and listen to a representative recording or test stream rather than relying on meter color alone. |
| A recent loud moment is easy to miss on the meter | The peak may have passed before you look. | Use OBS’s peak-hold indicator to inspect the loudest recent level, then review the corresponding recording if needed. |
| Playback seems more even for some viewers than others | YouTube’s Stable volume is a viewer-side option and may not apply to every video; Voice boost and viewer settings are not production controls. | Make the mix consistent before sending it to YouTube rather than relying on playback enhancement to correct it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a live podcast mixed from microphones, guests, or game audio, use the workflow above: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not go live from a camera or live microphone. If your show is a finished recording you want to loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
