The loop repeats the file; it does not guarantee a seamless join or uninterrupted broadcast, so test the preview and stream health before leaving it running.
What you need before starting
- A video file that plays correctly, with intentional audio (or an intentional silent track).
- FFmpeg installed with the encoder and network protocol you plan to use. Confirm the build supports H.264 encoding and RTMPS if you choose that endpoint.
- A YouTube Live stream configured in Live Control Room, where you can copy its server URL and stream key.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream plus other network traffic.
Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it as the credential that lets an encoder send video to your stream; do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or post.
Choose YouTube-compatible video settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, where your FFmpeg build and the server endpoint support it. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. These H.264 recommendations are from YouTube’s current Help page, accessed 2026-10-03:

| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps — H.264, YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps — H.264, YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps — H.264, YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps — H.264, YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03 |
These are recommendations, not guarantees of image quality or connection stability. For other formats, use the corresponding row in YouTube’s live encoder table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The example below is for 720p30 H.264; the 6 Mbps value is YouTube’s recommendation for that format, not 1080p30.
For a GOP-size approach, set the keyframe interval to roughly twice the frame rate: at 30 fps, -g 60 gives a two-second interval. Adjust the value if your source frame rate differs. Choose a target resolution and frame rate that suit the source and your upload capacity.

Set up the loop and start FFmpeg
- Check the source file. Play it through and check its image, audio, duration, and ending. Decide whether a hard cut back to the beginning will be acceptable; looping does not create a transition.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Use the RTMPS server address if available and supported by your FFmpeg build.
- Set the command’s destination. Replace the placeholder destination and key in this illustrative command with the exact address and key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the completed command if it contains your real key.
- Run the command and inspect the preview. Check that video and audio arrive, the preview looks right, and YouTube reports a healthy stream before relying on it for a longer broadcast.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This is an illustrative starting command, not a tested command or a universal prescription. It assumes a 30 fps H.264 output and uses a 720p30 bitrate recommendation; set the output dimensions to match the intended stream and use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation. Input characteristics, FFmpeg build, URL format, and YouTube stream configuration can require changes.
What the loop and pacing options do
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; place it before the corresponding -i. -re reads the file at its native frame rate, rather than as quickly as the computer can process it. FFmpeg documents this as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. Apply it to the file input here, not blindly to an actual live capture input: FFmpeg warns that limiting read rate on a live input can cause packet loss. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.

Change the bitrate and keyframe interval when needed
The example’s -b:v 6M and -maxrate 6M set a 6 Mbps video rate, with -bufsize 12M as the rate-control buffer. For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps; for 720p60 H.264, 8 Mbps; and for 1080p60 H.264, 12 Mbps. Each figure is YouTube’s recommendation for that format on its current Help page, accessed 2026-10-03. Select the row that matches your actual output. Keep CBR behavior consistent with YouTube’s guidance and verify the output in the live preview.
The sample uses -g 60, suitable for a two-second interval at 30 fps. If your output frame rate is different, set the GOP size to approximately twice that frame rate to preserve a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

Check bandwidth, preview, and archive expectations
YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Its networking tips recommend 20% upload headroom beyond the primary plus backup bitrate. Run an upload speed test, account for other devices and traffic, and leave enough capacity for the stream. A network disruption can interrupt delivery; a successful FFmpeg start alone does not show that the connection will remain stable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
- Open the watch page to confirm that viewers can reach the live stream.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the intended meditation video.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test failover as YouTube recommends.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Check the loop join before leaving it unattended
At each loop, FFmpeg starts the source file again. That restart is not automatically a seamless visual or audio transition. A secondary FFmpeg technical guide notes that stream-copy looping assumes the source begins on a keyframe and that audio/video length differences can contribute to pauses. Inspect the actual file and test its loop in the live preview; re-encoding may be worth investigating if the join is poor, but it is not a guaranteed fix. See FFmpeg’s technical guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg reads the file too quickly or timing is erratic: Confirm
-reappears before-iand applies to the file input. Do not apply it indiscriminately to a true live capture input. - YouTube receives no preview: Recheck the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the selected protocol is supported by the FFmpeg build, and check upload capacity.
- RTMPS SSL or timeout error: Verify both the protocol and server address use the RTMPS endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also mentions port 443 as a possible URL setting when needed.
- The picture or audio stutters: Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s row for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; check available upload bandwidth and other network traffic; then inspect the stream-health messages.
- A click, pause, or jump occurs at the loop boundary: Inspect the source’s start and end, keyframe structure, and audio/video lengths. Test any change in the preview before restarting a long broadcast.
FFmpeg’s infinite loop runs only while the process and its output continue. The host computer, network connection, YouTube ingest, and stream configuration can all affect continuity; -stream_loop -1 by itself is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
Copyright, live rules, and monetization
YouTube requires live-stream content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A meditation label does not itself establish that a particular recording is permitted, monetizable, or prohibited. Confirm you have the rights to the video, music, ambient recordings, and any other material you stream. Eligibility and content suitability for monetization depend on current YouTube Partner Program rules; YouTube’s encoder setup page notes that eligible partners can monetize live streams, but the workflow itself does not confer eligibility. See YouTube’s encoder setup page and YouTube Community Guidelines.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your meditation recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so your computer can be off.
