To run an internet radio-style Indian music stream from a cloud server, install AzuraCast on a Linux VPS using its recommended Docker method, configure its AutoDJ and streaming output, and test the public stream from another device. Before broadcasting, get written confirmation that your music rights cover both the musical works and sound recordings, internet streaming, and the territories you plan to reach. The software can automate playback; it does not grant music rights or guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
What you are building
AzuraCast is server-based radio station software for a VPS or other server. Its documented components include Liquidsoap for AutoDJ and Icecast-KH as the broadcasting frontend. In practice, you upload music you are entitled to use, organize it into playlists, configure automated playback, and make the resulting stream available to listeners through a player or stream URL. This is a self-hosted internet radio setup, not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime. A single VPS can fail, lose connectivity, or need maintenance. Availability depends on the host, network, monitoring, backups, and how quickly you can recover. AzuraCast documents AzuraRelay as an option for distributing a stream or handling high incoming traffic, but whether it is useful depends on your audience and architecture: AzuraRelay documentation.
Clear music rights before you configure AutoDJ
For Indian commercial music, treat rights in the musical and literary works and rights in the sound recordings as separate clearance questions. A license for a venue, terrestrial broadcast, or other use does not necessarily cover a public internet stream. Get written answers from the relevant rights holders for your exact catalogue, use, distribution territories, and commercial model before making the stream public.

Musical and literary works
IPRS identifies “Internet Non Interactive” (INTB) as a licensing category. It says platforms using music from its repertoire, including online streaming services, need a license and/or must pay the author royalty share to IPRS for IPRS author members. A radio-style stream may be relevant to the non-interactive category, but confirm the applicable route directly with IPRS for your operation and repertoire. Sound recordings
PPL India states that its standard tariff license covers on-ground music use and “DOES NOT permit any non-physical / digital usage.” Its FAQ directs radio-broadcast licensing enquiries to its licensing team. Do not assume that an on-ground license—or even a radio-broadcast license—automatically clears an internet simulcast. Ask PPL whether the planned internet-only stream and recordings are covered, and contact other relevant labels or recording owners as needed. PPL India advertises a repertoire of more than 1.04 crore songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Haryanvi. That is PPL’s stated library, not proof that a particular recording is in the repertoire or cleared for internet streaming; verify the rights and territory for the music you intend to use. Choose and size the VPS
AzuraCast lists these server resources. They are vendor requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee of listener capacity; actual needs depend on the media library, stream configuration, and any transcoding load.

Check the current AzuraCast requirements when selecting a server. AzuraCast lists one-click installer options from Linode (Akamai), Vultr, and DigitalOcean as well as self-installation in its installation guide. Compare providers by server location relative to listeners, bandwidth and egress terms, support, the ports you need to expose, and the available snapshot or backup features. Provider locations, features, and prices can change, so check their current terms rather than relying on a fixed price estimate.
Install AzuraCast on the VPS
- Create a compatible Linux VPS. Choose a 64-bit x86 or ARM64 server with at least the minimum resources above; for a small hobby deployment across a few stations, start with AzuraCast’s recommended resources. Use a fresh, minimal host where possible.
- Connect with administrator or sudo access. Follow the current AzuraCast Docker installation guide from an SSH session. It documents the Docker method, installer, and cloud-init options. Use the commands and prerequisites shown in the live guide; do not reuse commands from an old tutorial without checking that they remain current.
- Complete the web setup and create a station. Use the installation’s web interface to finish initial setup and create the station. Keep administrator credentials private and use a unique password.
- Upload only cleared audio. Add recordings for which you have the required permissions. Organize the station’s library and configure playlists and AutoDJ so playback follows the schedule or rotation you intend.
- Check the stream from outside the VPS. Confirm that the station’s public mount point and player work from a different network or device, not just from the server’s own interface. Check that audio plays as intended and that the playlist advances.
Set up a domain, HTTPS, backups, and updates
Point a domain at the server and enable HTTPS
Use a domain or subdomain that points to the AzuraCast installation before configuring Let’s Encrypt. AzuraCast’s SSL guide says a domain is required for Let’s Encrypt; follow its current steps at SSL & Let’s Encrypt. Protect the administration interface and keep its credentials private.

Back up station data and plan maintenance
Back up both your station configuration and media library, and check that you know how to restore them. Schedule updates for a low-listener period and notify listeners beforehand: AzuraCast’s update guide warns that stations will be briefly offline during updates and recommends backing up first. Follow the current AzuraCast update guidance.
