You can use FFmpeg to send a prerecorded lesson loop, camera feed, or other media source to YouTube Live, but a genuinely continuous stream also needs an always-on host, reliable upload, monitoring, and a plan for reconnecting. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; FFmpeg encodes and publishes your selected source. This guide gives you a source-aware setup and the settings to verify before leaving a stream running.
How do I stream a video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg?
The basic chain is source input → FFmpeg encoding and muxing → YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. Create or schedule a live event in YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current server URL and stream key into your publishing setup, then check the preview and stream-health status before you rely on the stream.
- Prepare the source. Decide whether FFmpeg will read a local lesson file, a playlist, a live camera, or a generated slate. These sources need different input handling; there is no single command that safely covers all of them.
- Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and retrieve the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes copying those values into the encoder’s stream settings: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose the output settings. Select a supported video codec, constant bitrate (CBR), an appropriate frame size and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Add compatible audio if the program has sound.
- Publish to the ingest endpoint. Configure FFmpeg to encode or pass through the chosen source as appropriate, mux it for the selected protocol, and send it to YouTube’s current ingest URL with the stream key.
- Verify the stream in YouTube. Confirm that the preview appears and inspect stream-health messages. A running FFmpeg process by itself does not establish that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP, and Google describes it as RTMP transmitted through an SSL connection. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing, but the exact command depends on the source, installed FFmpeg build, and current event endpoint. Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source-control repositories, and logs. Put it in a protected environment or secret store rather than committing it in a command file. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room before publishing again.

What FFmpeg settings should I use for YouTube Live?
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a keyframe frequency of two seconds; do not exceed a four-second interval. Follow YouTube’s current table for the codec and resolution you choose, because bitrate guidance varies by codec and format.

The 720p30 H.264 profile is a practical starting point for a modest lesson stream; move to a higher resolution only if your encoder and sustained upload support it. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30 in its current table; use the full table for the chosen format rather than applying one bitrate to every resolution. These figures are recommendations, not a promise that a specific connection will remain healthy.

Test with the real lesson material
Run a preflight using representative movement and audio. A static title slide may not reveal the same encoder load or network behavior as a lesson with screen changes, animation, or spoken audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking health messages during the event. Its encoder guidance says tests should include audio and movement similar to the intended stream; see YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
How can I loop a video 24/7 on YouTube?
For a prerecorded lesson, the source must be read repeatedly and paced as a live output. Exact FFmpeg input and looping flags depend on the media format, whether audio is present, and how the file’s timestamps behave. A command that works for one file or FFmpeg build may fail or drift with another, so validate the loop before scheduling continuous operation.

- Confirm the file decodes cleanly from beginning to end and has the audio tracks you expect.
- Check that the transition from the end of the lesson back to its beginning is acceptable; a hard cut or silence may be noticeable.
- Use real-time pacing for a file source so it is emitted as a live program rather than processed as fast as possible.
- Watch for timestamp discontinuities or audio/video mismatch at the loop boundary.
- Keep a local copy of the media and test any playlist or sequence changes before replacing the live source.
For a camera, use the input method appropriate to the capture device and operating system. For a generated slate, configure a video source and decide whether it needs an audio bed. In all cases, the YouTube ingest side remains the event’s current server URL and stream key.
How do I keep an FFmpeg livestream running if the connection drops?
Continuous operation is an operations problem as much as an encoder command. FFmpeg can exit, the host can restart, power can fail, or the upload route can become unavailable. Plan how the process is monitored and restarted, and test that recovery behavior before using the stream for lessons.

Local computer or hosted compute

Whichever you choose, use an external supervisor or equivalent process manager if you need automatic process restart; FFmpeg alone is not a universal 24/7 recovery system. Add checks that distinguish “process exists” from “YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio,” and arrange alerts that a person will actually see. Verify reconnect behavior against the event and ingest endpoint you use. - Upload capacity: use a sustained connection with headroom above the configured video and audio bitrate; do not infer reliability from a brief speed test.
- Monitoring: inspect YouTube Live Control Room health and preview, and check logs or alerts for encoder exits, stalled input, and repeated reconnects.
- Recovery: test what happens after a deliberate encoder restart and a temporary network interruption. Decide whether a human needs to intervene.
- Credentials: limit access to the host and the stream key, and rotate the key if it is exposed.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 livestream?
YouTube’s encoder workflow says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving to produce a complete archive of a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. If recordings matter for students, plan local recording or separate, deliberately scheduled sessions, then verify the current platform behavior before depending on an archive. The stated archive condition is in YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Make sure you have permission for the content and any embedded audio or video, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting.
