If OBS crashes, it stops sending its feed to YouTube. The practical way to keep a broadcast available is to prepare a separate backup encoder, configure it to send to the same YouTube event, and test that the player switches to it. That is failover—not a way to restart the crashed OBS process—and YouTube does not promise a seamless, interruption-free handoff.
What happens when OBS crashes
OBS is the encoder producing and sending the live feed. If the program crashes, that feed stops. YouTube’s continuity approach is to have another encoder ready to provide a feed. The backup must be configured and available independently; a local recording alone cannot keep the broadcast live.
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Set up and test a backup encoder
1. Prepare the YouTube event and both encoders
Create or configure the event in YouTube Live Control Room, then set up OBS as the primary encoder and a separate backup encoder. The backup could be software on another device or a dedicated hardware encoder; YouTube’s guidance supports backup-encoder failover generally but does not certify a particular product or prescribe a specific device arrangement. Make sure the backup can provide the video and audio sources your broadcast needs, including any overlays you rely on.

In the backup encoder, enter the correct YouTube server URL and stream key for the event. YouTube describes the stream key as the information an encoder uses to send its feed. Treat it as a credential: do not share it publicly. You can review the event’s settings in Manage live stream settings and the encoder setup guidance in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
2. Verify both feeds before going live
Check the preview in Live Control Room and confirm the event is accessible on its watch page and on mobile. Monitor audio and video quality. If you are recording locally, confirm that the archive file is growing. YouTube recommends these checks as part of event preparation.

3. Test actual failover
- Start the primary and backup encoders using the intended event configuration.
- Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable to simulate the primary feed failing.
- Watch the YouTube player and verify that it rolls over to the backup feed.
- Check that the backup’s picture, sound, and required production elements are present.
- Restore the primary setup after the test and confirm which encoder should be active for the event.
YouTube’s specific test instruction is: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” The test matters: having a second encoder configured does not establish that your particular setup will switch as expected. YouTube does not quantify handoff time or guarantee that viewers will see no interruption.
Choose a backup that is genuinely independent
- Second software encoder on another device: This can avoid relying on the OBS computer, provided the other device is configured, connected, and available before the failure. Test the real arrangement rather than assuming it will take over.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events and identifies hardware as one kind of encoder. A second encoder can be considered for a redundant setup, but the cited guidance does not certify a particular model or guarantee a seamless handoff.
- HLS backup ingestion: YouTube documents a backup server URL for HLS. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. It is an ingestion option, not a mechanism for restarting OBS after a crash. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
- Local recording: A local archive preserves a copy for recovery or editing, but it does not maintain the live broadcast. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. See Archive live streams.
When comparing setups, focus on whether the backup is independent of the OBS computer, how quickly it can take over, whether it has the right sources and overlays, and what latency or interruption viewers may experience. YouTube’s cited material does not provide a handoff-time figure.

Troubleshoot a backup that will not take over
The backup encoder cannot connect
Check that its YouTube server URL and stream key match the intended event. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder with the new one. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps say to copy the key from Live Control Room into the encoder. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
The player does not roll over during the test
Do not assume that the backup is ready for an event. Recheck its event settings and connection, then repeat the test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet. Verify the result in the player, as YouTube recommends. The cited guidance does not specify a guaranteed switching interval.

The video returns, but production elements are missing
Check the backup’s own sources, audio, and overlays. A backup feed only carries what that encoder is configured to send; test the complete program output rather than just whether a picture appears.
The live feed fails and the archive is unavailable
A local recording is a separate safeguard, not failover. Confirm during the event that the file is growing, and account for YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be automatically archived.
