How to Loop a White-Noise Video on YouTube Live Overnight

Use an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled to send repeating white-noise video to YouTube Live. This guide covers setup, stream checks, archives and a cloud alternative.

To loop a white-noise video on an actual YouTube Live broadcast, add the video to OBS Studio as a Media Source, enable Loop in that source’s properties, and send OBS to YouTube using an encoder stream key. YouTube’s Loop button only repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not create a livestream.

Before you start

  • Live access: Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
  • A video file you may use: Make sure you have permission to stream both the visuals and the white-noise audio. The setup steps do not grant rights to material in the file.
  • An encoder route: OBS is a software encoder that runs on a computer. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders, so a computer is not the only possible route; check that any alternative supports your local-file looping workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the available encoder workflow.

Set up the overnight loop with OBS

  1. Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, confirm that the channel can go live. If this is your first stream, allow time for activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create a scene and add the file. Install and open OBS Studio, create or select a scene, and add a Media Source. In the source properties, select your local white-noise video. OBS documents support for common local video formats such as MP4 and MOV. See OBS Media Sources.
  3. Turn on the source loop. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS will restart the file when playback completes. Check the preview to make sure the video and its audio play as intended.
  4. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and set up a stream or select one you have already created. Copy the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or publish it.
  5. Preview and test before the overnight session. Start the encoder workflow and check both the OBS preview and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video and audio are present, then check stream health. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring audio and video before and during a broadcast; its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom.
  6. Start the broadcast and monitor it. Begin streaming from OBS and complete the Live Control Room workflow to take the stream live. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality where possible. A network disruption can break the stream, so a successful test is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted overnight session.

Choose encoder settings for the connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance to select settings that your upload connection can sustain. There is no single bitrate established as necessary for every white-noise stream: the right choice depends on the output resolution, frame rate, encoder and available upload bandwidth. A static image may be visually simple, but the stream still needs stable audio and a reliable connection.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 encoder options with protocol-specific qualifications. Follow the guidance for your chosen encoder and protocol rather than assuming every combination is supported. This basic OBS loop does not require HDR or HLS; see YouTube’s HLS setup information only if you specifically need that workflow.

Plan for the archive and interruptions

Archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not promise a complete automatic archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If preserving the full overnight session matters, plan for a broadcast shorter than 12 hours or arrange a separate recording. YouTube’s encoder setup guide gives the archive qualification.

Connection drops

YouTube warns that network disruption can interrupt a stream. Leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, test the connection, and monitor stream health. Do not treat a loop setting as an automatic reconnection feature: it repeats the media file, not the internet connection or broadcast.

Viewer loop versus livestream loop

The Loop control in YouTube’s watch player repeats a video for the person watching it. It does not send that video out as a live broadcast. For a real YouTube Live stream, an encoder must continuously send the looped media as its output: in this workflow, OBS plays the Media Source repeatedly and streams the scene to YouTube. See YouTube’s player-loop instructions alongside its encoder setup guide.

Troubleshooting

  • The channel cannot go live: Check verification and live-streaming restrictions in YouTube Studio. If this is your first broadcast, activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: Open the OBS Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled for the correct source.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS against the stream selected in Live Control Room. If you exposed the key publicly, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • There is no audio or video in the preview: Check the OBS scene and source, then verify both the OBS and YouTube previews before taking the stream live.
  • The stream health is poor or the broadcast disconnects: Check the upload connection and encoder settings, preserve bandwidth headroom, and test again. Network disruption can break a stream; the loop setting does not prevent it.
  • The full overnight stream is not in the archive: Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours, not guaranteed for longer ones. Arrange a separate recording if the full session must be retained.
