Silence can come from the radio program, its routing into the encoder, the encoder’s audio settings, the connection to YouTube, or a viewer’s playback. Find the point where audio disappears before changing equipment: listen to the encoder output, check YouTube’s Live Control Room, inspect a local recording if available, and compare reports from other viewers.
First, find out who is affected
Ask whether the stream is silent for one person or for several viewers on different internet connections. If only one viewer has the problem, check that viewer’s playback and device. If multiple viewers on separate connections report silence, investigate the encoder and the stream path rather than assuming each viewer has the same local issue. YouTube recommends using this pattern to help distinguish an individual playback problem from an encoder issue: YouTube livestream troubleshooting.
Trace the audio from the source to YouTube
Check each stage in order. The first stage where sound is missing narrows the likely cause; a silent YouTube player alone does not prove that a microphone, mixer, cable, or other hardware is defective.
- Listen to the program source and encoder output. Monitor the audio in your encoder or streaming software. If it is silent there too, check that the radio program is playing and that its audio is routed to the encoder’s intended input. Also check that the encoder has audio enabled. YouTube lists source quality and routing among possible causes when audio is already poor at the encoder: troubleshooting guidance.
- Read the Live Control Room messages. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health, and timestamped errors. YouTube’s live streaming error messages include “Your encoder is sending no audio” and warnings about multiple audio streams. If you see one, check the encoder’s audio output and configure it to send a supported, single audio stream.
- Compare the preview and a local archive. If a local recording is available, listen to it as well as the Live Control Room preview. If the encoder and local recording contain sound but YouTube playback does not, the original program source is less likely to be where audio disappears. Continue checking stream health and connectivity instead of replacing hardware immediately.
- Check the outbound connection if encoder audio is healthy. YouTube advises checking the internet connection when the encoder output looks and sounds good but the livestream does not. Test the upload connection; if it shows problems, contact your internet service provider. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
Use the evidence to choose the next check
| What you find | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The encoder output is silent | Confirm the program is playing, inspect audio routing and input selection, and verify audio is enabled in the encoder. |
| The encoder sounds right, but YouTube reports no audio | Check the encoder’s outgoing audio configuration and the Live Control Room error details. |
| YouTube flags multiple audio streams | Review the encoder output and make sure it sends one supported audio stream. |
| The encoder and local archive have audio, but YouTube playback does not | Check the preview, stream-health messages, and outbound connection; do not assume the source hardware is at fault. |
| Only one viewer reports silence | Have that viewer check playback and compare with another viewer on a different connection. |
| Several viewers on separate connections report silence | Prioritize encoder output, Live Control Room errors, and the connection to YouTube. |
Test before the next broadcast
Run a test stream with audio similar to the planned radio program. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, then monitor both audio and stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting, streaming tips, encoder setup guidance, and creator livestream tips cover preparation and monitoring.
