To run sleep music continuously on YouTube, use a verified channel with live streaming enabled, secure rights for every recording and visual, and send a continuous feed through an encoder or a cloud service built for prerecorded streams. Test the feed before going public, keep enough network capacity for the stream, and plan for interruptions and YouTube’s archive limit. For a cloud option that plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream without keeping your computer on.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel: it must be verified and have had no live streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A continuous video-and-audio feed: this can come from a local software or hardware encoder, or a cloud service that streams prerecorded videos.
- Rights to all content: confirm permissions for both the musical composition and the sound recording, as well as any visuals. Check that the license covers live transmission, territories, duration, archives or replays, and monetization if you intend to monetize.
- A reliability plan: a local setup depends on a powered computer, working encoder, electricity, and internet connection. A cloud service can remove the need to keep a streaming computer running at home.
YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to represent that they hold the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. The permissions required depend on the rights chain and applicable jurisdictions; a general “royalty-free” label does not establish that a particular license covers this use.
How to create a 24/7 sleep music stream on YouTube
1. Enable live streaming
- Verify the YouTube channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days.
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. If this is the channel’s first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
2. Prepare music and visuals you are allowed to use
- Identify the rights holder or holders for each track. A composition and its sound recording can have different rights holders.
- Read the actual license or obtain written permission. Confirm that it covers YouTube live transmission, your intended territories and stream duration, and any archive or replay YouTube may make available. Confirm commercial-use terms separately if you plan to monetize.
- Keep copies of licenses, permissions, and any relevant correspondence. If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether your channel can be added to its allowlist where applicable. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still interrupt a live stream if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Apply the same checks to visuals, including backgrounds, artwork, and animations. Use assets you created or have permission to use for this live-streaming purpose.
A purchase, subscription, or permission to use a track in ordinary videos does not by itself establish permission for an always-on live stream. Creator Music licensing and revenue-sharing tracks are not a blanket solution: YouTube’s Creator Music terms say eligible tracks under those arrangements cannot be used in live streams.
3. Choose how to send the continuous feed
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. For a local encoder workflow, YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS; HLS is not required merely because a stream is continuous. YouTube describes HLS as useful for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or show it in a screen recording.
- Configure the encoder to send the prepared sleep-music video and audio continuously. YouTube’s guidance cited here does not specify a bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or computer specification for this particular use case, so do not assume one universal setting. Follow the current encoder and YouTube guidance for the format you select.
- Start sending the feed, check the Live Control Room preview and stream status, and only then make the stream public.
4. Check connection capacity and monitor the stream
YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Use a reliable connection, check the preview before going public, and monitor stream quality after launch. A local encoder needs the computer to keep sending the feed throughout the broadcast; plan how you will respond to power, internet, or software failures.
5. Decide how you will handle the archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not promise a complete archive for a longer stream, so do not rely on a 24-hour broadcast becoming a full replay. If a replay matters, consider planned sessions under 12 hours and confirm the current Live Control Room behavior before depending on the archive.

Can I stream music overnight on YouTube?
Yes, if the channel is eligible, the feed remains connected, and you have the necessary rights. Overnight operation does not change the rights requirement or remove the need to monitor reliability. If you use a local encoder, the computer and its connection must continue sending the stream. If you use a cloud service, review its current features and terms, including looping, recovery, and how it handles a YouTube interruption.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. An unresolved match can interrupt or terminate a stream, even when you believe you have a license. Keep your permissions available and check Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder where applicable.

Making an always-on stream with a local encoder
A local setup gives you direct control over the encoder and feed, but it makes the stream dependent on equipment and connectivity at the location. YouTube does not prescribe a particular computer, UPS, router, or sleep-music bitrate in the guidance cited here. Choose equipment based on the encoder and media you will run, rather than treating a specific computer model or configuration as a platform requirement.
- Keep the computer powered and prevent planned updates or sleep settings from stopping the encoder during the broadcast.
- Protect the stream key and have a recovery procedure for encoder crashes, power loss, or an internet outage.
- Check the preview and stream health after starting, and keep the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- Do not assume a longer-than-12-hour session will produce a complete archive.

Having a music license does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility or approval for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and require original, authentic content. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its former “repetitious content” policy covers repetitive or mass-produced material and renamed it “inauthentic content.” Make your authorship and creative contribution clear; a channel made up of interchangeable, minimally varied templates may be ineligible. These are channel-level policy reviews, not preapproval of a particular stream.
Troubleshooting an always-on sleep stream
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is not available yet | The channel is not verified, has a recent live restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. | Verify the channel, check restrictions from the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming. |
| The encoder cannot connect | The stream URL or key may be wrong, or the encoder may not be sending a supported feed. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, enter them in the encoder, start sending, and inspect the preview and status. |
| The stream is unstable or drops | Network capacity, connectivity, power, or encoder operation may be interrupting the feed. | Check the connection and encoder, maintain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom above total stream bitrate, and follow the recovery plan for the setup you chose. |
| YouTube interrupts or ends the stream | A third-party content match may be unresolved, or the feed may have stopped. | Check Live Control Room notices and the relevant rights status. Contact the rights holder about the claim and Content ID allowlisting where applicable; restart the feed after resolving the cause. |
| The replay is missing or incomplete | The session exceeded the under-12-hour automatic archive guidance, or archive behavior has changed. | Do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will archive in full. For an important replay, use planned sessions under 12 hours and confirm current Live Control Room behavior. |
Cost and workflow trade-offs
A local encoder avoids a cloud-streaming subscription but requires an operating computer, continuous connectivity, and a way to recover from failures. A cloud service can keep the feed running without a home computer, but its current price, limits, archive handling, and recovery behavior should be checked before choosing. YouTube identifies Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos; that identification alone does not establish its current price or comparative performance. For a local encoder, OBS is one option YouTube lists among HLS-capable encoders.
