You can send an internet radio feed to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by pairing the station’s audio URL with a still image, encoding both as a video stream, and sending that stream to the RTMPS endpoint and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is an illustrative starting pattern, not a tested recipe: confirm your station’s format, your FFmpeg build, and the endpoint for your account before using it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube account and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio under Create → Go Live. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to retrieve the stream URL and key in Live Control Room: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • An FFmpeg build that can access the radio URL and includes the video and audio encoders used in the example, notably libx264 and AAC encoding. FFmpeg’s available options vary by build; consult the FFmpeg documentation.
  • A directly accessible radio stream URL, plus its actual audio format and any authentication details. A station-specific URL was not provided here, so the example cannot validate one.
  • A still image, such as station artwork, that you have permission to use. It will be the video track accompanying the audio.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the configured video and audio bitrate.

Before relaying a station, check its terms and obtain the necessary permission for both the station feed and the underlying recordings, including any territory restrictions. The technical setup does not establish that a particular station or recording may be rebroadcast.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream and open its Live Control Room details.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, commit it to a public script, or include it in logs or screenshots.
  3. For encrypted ingest, use the RTMPS URL revealed through the lock icon in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not assume an ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Use the endpoint exactly as displayed. The URL’s path and the way the key is appended can vary, so do not assume the slash-and-key format in an example is universal.

Illustrative FFmpeg command

Replace cover.jpg, RADIO_STREAM_URL, and the output destination with your own values. The destination must use the RTMPS endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room, kept private. This template has not been run or tested:

ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -i cover.jpg -i 'RADIO_STREAM_URL'
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 2500k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

What the inputs and mapping do

  • -loop 1 -i cover.jpg uses the image as a repeated video input in commonly used FFmpeg builds. Check the behavior and still-image timing against your installed version.
  • -i 'RADIO_STREAM_URL' opens the radio feed. Its URL may require authentication or use a format different from the example assumptions.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 explicitly takes video from the image input and audio from the radio input. The mapping must change if the actual inputs expose different streams.
  • -f flv selects the output container used in this RTMP/RTMPS-style example. The endpoint itself must come from YouTube’s Live Control Room.

What the encoding settings mean

The example encodes H.264 video at 30 fps with a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a 2-second keyframe interval at that frame rate, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. It sets a 2.5 Mbps target video bitrate, a 3 Mbps maximum rate, and a 6 Mbps buffer. These are example values, not universal requirements. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval not exceeding 4 seconds. For 720p30, it gives 3 Mbps recommended video bitrate, with a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum, and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The command uses -c:a aac to provide a straightforward baseline. If your station feed already has a suitable audio codec, remuxing may be possible instead of transcoding, but the appropriate choice depends on the source and output compatibility. If your FFmpeg build lacks libx264 or AAC encoding, choose an encoder it supports and verify that YouTube accepts the resulting format.

Choose settings that suit a static radio stream

Decision Practical choice What to know
Video codec H.264 in this template YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. H.264 is the conventional choice used by this illustrative command.
Resolution and bitrate For 720p at 30 fps, 3 Mbps recommended video bitrate YouTube lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum for that specific mode. Choose a rate your upload can sustain and run a speed test; those figures are not a guarantee of connection capacity.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends these audio settings. Confirm the radio input is actually stereo if stereo output is intended.
Keyframes 2-second interval recommended YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. In this command, -g 60 at 30 fps requests a 2-second GOP.
Ingest protocol RTMPS for a straightforward static-image stream YouTube recommends RTMPS. HLS is a documented alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, but its segmented delivery has higher latency; see Set up an HLS stream.

For a mostly static image, video motion is minimal, but the stream still needs a video track and a bitrate that the connection can maintain. YouTube recommends testing with conditions similar to the intended broadcast. Its encoder guidance states: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Start the stream and verify it in Live Control Room

  1. Run the modified command and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  2. Check that the preview shows the intended image and that the radio audio is audible and stable. Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages before starting the broadcast.
  3. Test under conditions resembling the real stream, including the expected audio and any planned visual movement. Resolve errors in the preview or stream health before relying on the setup.
  4. When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat one session as an unlimited, uninterrupted broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No radio audio or FFmpeg cannot open the input The URL may be inaccessible, require authentication, or expose a different format than expected. Confirm the URL and credentials with the station operator, then inspect which audio stream FFmpeg can read. Adjust the input options and mapping to match the actual source.
Video appears but audio is missing The radio input may not expose an audio stream as 1:a:0, or the mapping may be wrong. Inspect the input streams and update -map to select the actual audio stream. Confirm FFmpeg can decode or pass through its codec.
FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder The installed build may not include libx264 or AAC encoding. Check the encoders available in that build; select supported YouTube-compatible video and audio encoders, or install a build that includes the required ones.
YouTube does not receive the stream The endpoint or key may be wrong, or the wrong protocol URL may have been used. Copy the current URL and key again from Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, retrieve its address from the lock icon and preserve the endpoint’s exact formatting.
Unstable stream health or dropped connection The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the radio source may be interrupted. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and connection stability. Reduce the configured bitrate if needed, test again, and investigate whether the station feed itself remains online.
The stream stops when the computer or network goes offline FFmpeg is running on that computer and depends on its power, process, and internet connection. For a local setup, keep the machine and connection available and monitor FFmpeg. This method alone does not establish a dependable 24/7 restart configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an uploaded recording or playlist to run as a 24/7 YouTube stream without leaving FFmpeg, a computer, or a home connection on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube, not from a live radio URL or camera, so it is not a direct replacement for the FFmpeg method above unless your content is available as an uploaded video.
