Keep the loudest expected voice, music, alert, or transition below 0 dBFS; use a compressor only to control uneven loudness and place a limiter last as a peak safety ceiling. An OBS fader or limiter cannot repair distortion that has already occurred at the microphone, interface, or another upstream stage.
Find where the clipping starts
Work from the source toward the stream. Listen at the earliest point you can monitor—such as a microphone’s headphone output or an audio interface’s direct monitor—then compare that sound with OBS monitoring and a test recording. If it is already distorted before it reaches OBS, reduce gain at that earlier stage. Lowering the OBS fader afterward makes the distorted signal quieter, not clean.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide puts the principle simply: “Always start at the device in question.” Its guidance covers microphone gain, mixer channel and master controls, operating-system recording levels, and application volume. A system slider does not behave identically on every setup, so test what it changes on your own computer. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Check the gain stages in order
- Microphone: If it has a physical gain control, lower it when the mic’s own monitor or output distorts on loud speech.
- Interface or mixer: Check the input gain for the relevant channel, plus any mixer master control. Some interfaces need manufacturer software; consult the device’s controls and instructions.
- Operating system and app: Check the recording level and any application-specific volume control. Test their effect rather than assuming they change the same part of the signal chain.
- OBS: Once the signal is clean entering OBS, set the source’s mixer fader so the OBS meter has headroom during the loudest material.
Read the OBS meter during loud moments
Keep OBS’s Audio Mixer visible while setting levels. The moving bar is a peak program meter; its peak-hold marker shows the loudest level over the preceding 20 seconds, according to OBS documentation. Use it after a loud phrase, breath, alert, or transition instead of judging the mix only during a quiet stretch. OBS describes green, yellow, and red as level cues: speech can reach the lower end of red, while background music and sound effects should remain in green. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

OBS’s technical meter guide gives -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as the permitted maximum level. Treat these as references from OBS documentation, not universal targets for every source or streaming platform. The guide says OBS currently uses a sample-peak meter; it notes that oversampling could measure maximum peaks more accurately. For a relaxation mix, leave practical headroom for a sudden spoken line or alert above the soft ambience. OBS Technical Audio Overview
Use compression and limiting for different jobs
Filters can help shape a clean signal, but they cannot substitute for safe input gain. A compressor reduces material above its threshold and is generally placed near the beginning of the filter chain. It can help tame speech that varies in loudness; too much compression can make a calm stream sound unnaturally flat or cause the ambience to swell and recede audibly. OBS’s documented compressor defaults—threshold -18.00 dB, ratio 10:1, attack 6 ms, and release 60 ms—are defaults, not a recommended relaxation-stream preset. OBS Compressor Filter

If the microphone should take precedence over music or ambience, OBS supports sidechain ducking on the music source. The music is reduced when the chosen sidechain source, such as the microphone, crosses the compressor threshold. Treat any example settings in OBS’s guide as a starting point: a gentle relaxation mix may need less obvious level change. OBS Compressor Filter
A limiter is the final ceiling for peaks. OBS describes it as a compressor with a fast attack and high ratio that prevents output from exceeding its threshold. Put it last in the filter chain; OBS explicitly advises that order. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release, not universal recommendations. Record a representative pre-stream test
Test the complete scene and routing, not just an isolated microphone. OBS recommends testing settings before relying on them in a first stream or recording and listening back to a normal session. OBS Streaming and Recording Tips
- Open the scene and sources you plan to use live, with the actual routing and filters enabled.
- Record a short sample containing the loudest likely speech, normal music or ambience changes, and any alerts or transitions you expect to use.
- Watch the mixer meter and peak-hold marker through those moments. If the source distorts, lower gain at the earliest stage where you hear it; if the signal is clean but too high in OBS, adjust the OBS fader.
- Listen to the recording through headphones or speakers at a sensible level. Check that speech remains intelligible, ambience stays calm, and no peak sounds harsh, crunchy, or abruptly flattened.
- If you changed gain or filters, make another recording. Do not rely on the meter alone to judge how the final mix sounds.
Troubleshoot common clipping symptoms
- The mic sounds distorted even in its own monitor: The overload is likely at the microphone or an earlier input stage. Reduce its gain, then check the interface or mixer input.
- The source sounds clean before OBS but distorted in OBS: Inspect interface or mixer channel gain, OS recording level, app volume, and OBS filters. Reduce the earliest stage that is overloading, then retest.
- The meter looks safe, but the recording still sounds clipped: Listen to the source earlier in the chain and review the recorded loud moments. A later fader reduction cannot repair distortion baked in upstream; verify that the full scene and routing were tested.
- Speech is fine but an alert or transition peaks: Include those events in the test and lower the level of the source that causes the peak. Keep the limiter last as a safety ceiling rather than relying on it to fix a routinely overloaded mix.
- The ambience pumps or ducks too noticeably: Reduce compressor action or sidechain ducking and listen again. Compression manages dynamics, but a strong effect can undermine the steady feel of a relaxation stream.
- Noise suppression or a gate has not stopped clipping: Those filters address unwanted background sound, not an overloaded signal. Return to the gain stages and locate where the distortion begins.
When different hardware might help
You do not need to buy equipment just to fix clipping. If your current audio device lacks useful input gain adjustment, a USB audio interface with a gain control may give you a practical way to set the level at the source. For several inputs, a mixer with channel and master controls may help manage the chain. Check compatibility and the device’s own setup requirements before buying; neither product type is a universal fix.
