The practical setup is: confirm your channel can livestream, clear the rights to everything you broadcast, connect an encoder with your YouTube stream key, test the stream, and arrange monitoring and recovery. YouTube documents this encoder workflow, but its guidance does not promise that a single stream can stay live indefinitely or that a continuous broadcast will always be fully archived.
What you need for a continuous YouTube radio station
A YouTube “radio station” is a live video stream whose main content is audio: for example, music, talk, or a visualizer paired with a static image. An encoder sends that program to YouTube. You can run encoding software on a computer or use standalone encoder hardware; YouTube describes both options in its encoder setup guide.
Plan for four essentials before you go live:
- A channel with live access. The channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Permission for the whole program. You are responsible for the music and other content rights needed for your broadcast and its relevant territories.
- An encoder and stable upload connection. The encoder must remain connected and send a consistent feed. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate.
- A monitoring and restart plan. Someone or something needs to detect silence, network failure, encoder problems, or a rights interruption and take action.
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a YouTube guarantee. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish indefinite runtime, guaranteed uptime, or complete archiving of a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Clear music and content rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for rights on the broadcaster: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the Livestream terms and conditions and confirm that your permissions cover the intended live use and territories.

Do not assume that buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or seeing a “royalty-free” or “public domain” label automatically clears a YouTube live broadcast. What a license permits depends on the rights holder and the agreement. Check whether the permission covers livestreaming, the countries where viewers may watch, and any archive or replay you plan to keep.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even if you have a license, a match may interrupt the stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its allowlist where needed; a license by itself may not prevent an interruption. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Set up the station and connect it to YouTube
- Verify the channel and check access. Sign in to the channel you intend to use and confirm that livestreaming is available. If enabling live streaming for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Review YouTube’s eligibility requirements and guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.
- Prepare a rights-cleared program. Assemble the music or talk content, any visuals, and the order in which they will play. Keep the relevant licenses and any Content ID allowlisting confirmation accessible to the people operating the station.
- Choose an encoder. Use encoding software on a computer or standalone encoder hardware. YouTube’s encoder guide lists options and notes that listed encoder products are not made by YouTube. OBS appears in YouTube’s HLS encoder guidance; that does not make HLS necessary for a simple radio-style stream.
- Create the encoder stream in Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream that uses an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube explains these controls in Manage live stream settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the new key.
- Choose a supported ingestion protocol and configure the encoder. RTMPS is a recommended secure ingestion option in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. YouTube also supports HLS for compatible encoders; its HLS guidance notes higher latency than RTMP. Choose the path supported by your encoder and use the settings YouTube recommends for that protocol.
- Set the video and audio parameters. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with no more than 4 seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps; the documented audio formats include AAC and MP3. A static image or visualizer does not remove the need to configure audio correctly. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the precise settings supported by your chosen format and resolution.
- Test the complete path before announcing the station. Send representative audio and video, check the preview in Live Control Room, then verify the public watch page on desktop and mobile. Listen for clipping, silence, dropouts, or an incorrect playlist transition, and check the stream’s health indicators before relying on it.
- Budget upload bandwidth and monitor the broadcast. Measure the available upload connection while other expected network use is active. YouTube says, “We recommend leaving a bit of room (20% recommended).” Apply that headroom to the total bitrate being sent, including a backup stream if you use one. Its Streaming tips also recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming a connection will remain stable.
- Plan archiving and restarts. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not rely on that statement as a promise of a complete archive for a stream running longer than 12 hours. Decide in advance whether to split the schedule into shorter broadcasts and how an operator will restart the encoder or create the next stream.
Keep the broadcast running when something fails
Continuous operation is as much about the operating plan as the initial setup. A local encoder depends on the machine staying powered, the software continuing to run, and the internet connection continuing to upload. YouTube recommends testing equipment, watching the preview and stream health, and allowing bandwidth headroom; its documentation does not promise automatic recovery from every encoder, network, or policy interruption.
Plan who responds
- Assign someone to notice a stopped feed, silence, or a rights warning, including outside normal working hours.
- Document how to check the encoder, connection, Live Control Room status, and Content ID or policy alerts.
- Test the recovery procedure before relying on it. Include what happens if the computer reboots, the encoder exits, or the stream key needs to be reset.
- If a rights holder has licensed your music, confirm the channel allowlisting process before launch; do not wait for a live interruption to discover that a match blocks playback.
Decide how to handle long sessions
Because YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, a station operator should decide whether to schedule shorter sessions and restart them, or accept that a longer broadcast’s full archive is not established by that guidance. A restart also needs an operator plan: the encoder must reconnect to the correct stream, and viewers may experience an interruption while it does so.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel may not be verified, may have a recent livestream restriction, or may still be waiting for first-time enablement. | Check the channel’s live eligibility and restrictions. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation. See Get started with live streaming. |
| The encoder cannot connect | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the wrong stream may be selected, or the chosen protocol may not match the encoder setup. | Compare the encoder’s connection fields with the values in Live Control Room, confirm the selected stream and protocol, and replace the key if it was exposed. See Manage live stream settings. |
| Playback stutters or drops | Upload capacity may be unstable or too close to the stream’s total bitrate. | Test upload speed under realistic network use, lower the bitrate if necessary, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the encoder and Live Control Room preview. See Streaming tips. |
| Audio sounds wrong or disappears | Audio format, sample rate, bitrate, or the program feed may be misconfigured; the encoder may also have stopped advancing through the playlist. | Check the audio source and encoder meters, then verify supported AAC or MP3 settings and the recommended stereo values of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Listen to the preview and watch for silence during transitions. See encoder settings guidance. |
| The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match | A third-party match may have been detected, including when the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights holder. | Review the rights and any claim details, contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable, and do not resume the same material until you have confirmed the necessary permissions. See Copyright issues with live streams. |
| The archive is incomplete or missing after a long broadcast | YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance specifies streams under 12 hours, not guaranteed full archiving for longer sessions. | Check the stream duration and archive status. For future schedules, consider shorter sessions and plan the restart around the station’s programming. |
