First confirm your channel is eligible, secure rights to every element, then configure the stream in YouTube Studio and test the feed before leaving it running. For a 24/7 setup, plan how to manage streams longer than YouTube’s automatic archive window and how the encoder will be monitored or recovered.
Before you start: check eligibility and prepare your content
Enable YouTube Live in advance
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before announcing a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Prepare the audio and visuals
Gather the ocean recording and any images, animation, or other video you plan to show. You need the necessary rights for every part of the live content, including music and visuals. Keep copies of licences and written permissions so you can verify what they cover, such as livestreaming, worldwide use, and any limits on duration or platform.
Make sure the audio is suitable for a continuous background stream: listen for abrupt cuts, silence, clipping, and unwanted changes in volume at loop points. These are practical quality checks, not YouTube requirements. If you use a playlist, check that each item has the required rights and that transitions work as intended.

Set up a continuous stream through YouTube Studio
YouTube’s encoder workflow is suitable for sending a prerecorded ocean-sounds feed as a live stream. The encoder can be software or hardware; YouTube also describes cloud-based services for continuous streaming of prerecorded video. The exact controls vary by encoder, so follow its instructions for entering YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream. In YouTube Studio, use the live-streaming workflow to create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder option. Check the current YouTube instructions at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, send it to viewers, or include it in screenshots. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure your prerecorded feed. Load the ocean recording or playlist into the encoder or streaming service. Confirm that the selected source, audio, and visuals are the ones you intend to broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Begin sending the feed, then verify the preview in Studio before starting the public stream. Confirm that audio is audible and clean and that the picture is present and stable.
- Start the live stream and check viewer access. Verify that the event opens from your channel and watch page, and check it on a mobile device. Keep the encoder status and stream preview available while you confirm playback.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality. If you are recording an archive locally as well, check that the file exists and continues to grow.

Choose latency and DVR deliberately
YouTube Studio’s stream settings include latency and DVR controls. Lower latency can make the stream more prone to buffering, while DVR lets viewers pause and resume. For ocean sounds intended as background listening, immediate interaction may matter less than reliable playback; choose settings for your audience and test the result. YouTube also documents encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls in its stream settings guidance.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions require creators to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights.

A licence alone may not prevent interruption: a rights holder may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm this with the rights holder when applicable, and retain documentation of permissions and any allowlisting. Do not assume that ambient sounds, recordings found online, or a purchased track are free to use in a continuous YouTube broadcast.
Plan for streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean a single 24/7 broadcast will produce one automatically archived recording. The documentation does not prescribe an exact restart schedule for long-running streams, so choose a segment length and restart approach that suit your content and operations.

Before relying on archives, decide whether you need a local recording or separate copies of the source files. If you record locally, monitor that the archive file is being created and growing, and check its integrity after a segment ends. An uninterrupted live feed and a usable archive are separate outcomes; verify each one.

A local computer gives you direct control over the encoder and media files, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. A cloud-based continuous-streaming service can operate the feed remotely; YouTube’s encoder guidance describes this service category, but it does not establish a particular provider’s price, uptime, or recovery behavior.
