Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a prerecorded event replay, start with 1080p at 30 fps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and normal latency. Use the bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen codec only if your connection can sustain it steadily. Test an unlisted broadcast and monitor stream health before going public.
There is one crucial catch: a single YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If viewers need a complete replay, use shorter broadcasts and keep a local recording backup.
Recommended OBS settings at a glance
| Setting | Starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Use a lower output if the source is lower resolution or your connection cannot sustain the required bitrate. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Choose 60 fps when the source has motion that benefits from it and your upload can support the higher bitrate. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use the same constant bitrate throughout the stream; prioritize connection stability over a higher setting. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | Use it where available; YouTube recommends it because stream data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers. |
| Latency | Normal | Use a lower-latency mode only when near-real-time interaction matters more than playback buffer and feature availability. |
| Video codec | H.264 | H.265/HEVC and AV1 are also documented by YouTube; actual availability depends on your encoder and hardware. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265 and does not support AV1. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | Listen through the full loop to catch silence, clicks, or abrupt joins. |
YouTube’s recommendations can change; check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a major broadcast.
Set video size and frame rate
Match the source rather than upscaling it
In OBS, the base canvas is the workspace for arranging sources; the output (scaled) resolution is what OBS sends to YouTube. Start at 1920×1080 when the recording has that detail and your connection can reliably carry the bitrate. Do not upscale a lower-resolution video expecting added detail. Keep the source aspect ratio intact, then preview the result for cropping or letterboxing. OBS explains these distinctions in its Studio overview.

Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the recording
For a mostly static replay, 30 fps is a sensible starting point and needs less bitrate than 60 fps. Use 60 fps for motion-heavy footage only if the source benefits from it and the connection can sustain the additional data. The highest available setting is not automatically the best: a stable, uninterrupted broadcast matters more than nominal resolution or frame rate.
Choose a bitrate your upload can hold
Set OBS to CBR and use YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation as a target only after testing confirms your sustained upload can handle it. YouTube’s published ingestion figures are:

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular picture quality. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a level the connection can sustain. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Its troubleshooting page suggests 75% of total upload as a starting point, but that is a rough troubleshooting guideline—not a universal guarantee. See YouTube’s encoder guidance, its recommended upload speed guidance, and OBS’s dropped-frame troubleshooting.
Configure the YouTube broadcast for a replay
Use normal latency unless interaction requires less delay
Normal latency is the safer default for an unattended replay because a larger playback buffer can help smooth delivery. Lower latency may increase buffering. Ultra-low latency excludes resolutions above 1080p and closed captions, so it is a poor fit if you need those features. Review YouTube’s live stream latency and broadcast controls.

Enable DVR only for the rewind experience you need
Turn on DVR if viewers should pause or rewind during the live event. It does not guarantee unlimited rewind: YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable when a stream runs longer than 12 hours. The archival limit is separate from the DVR setting.
Choose auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
Auto-start can begin the broadcast when the encoder connects; auto-stop can end it when the source stops. For a continuous loop, a brief interruption may trigger a stop depending on the broadcast configuration. Test reconnection before launch and decide whether a person should review the event before it resumes. YouTube documents these controls in its LiveBroadcasts API; the OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide describes reconnection considerations for its scheduled-broadcast workflow. Studio controls may vary by channel and interface.

Test visibility and audience settings
Run an unlisted test before making the event public. Set visibility and the audience declaration accurately for the actual content, and confirm the current options in YouTube Studio before each broadcast.

A single 24-hour live event is not a dependable way to create a complete replay archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Separately, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Recording-from-start or archive-related broadcast controls do not remove that Help Center caveat.

If the full event must remain available as a replay, schedule broadcast segments below the 12-hour boundary and record locally as a backup. Verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive; its live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance explain the limits.
Preflight checklist and troubleshooting
Before the public event
- Make an unlisted test using representative footage and audio, as YouTube recommends.
- Watch the test from a separate device and network. Check framing, sound, buffering, playback quality, and the loop transition.
- Check stream health and diagnostic messages in YouTube Live Control Room; use YouTube’s stream health guidance to interpret them.
- Test the failure modes that matter for unattended operation: source looping, reconnection after a brief disconnect, and restart after a system interruption.
- Keep a local recording if a complete replay matters, especially for broadcasts that may exceed 12 hours.
If OBS reports dropped frames
- Likely cause: The connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- What to do: Lower the bitrate until the stable upload can support it. Check for network congestion and test whether another ingest server or network path is more reliable. Confirm the result in OBS and YouTube stream health.
If viewers report buffering
- Likely cause: The chosen bitrate or latency setting may be too demanding for the delivery path or viewer connection.
- What to do: Test a lower bitrate or normal latency and check YouTube’s stream health diagnostics. Do not assume a higher encoder setting will improve the viewing experience.
If the replay is cropped, silent, or has a bad loop join
- Likely cause: A mismatch in canvas/output dimensions or aspect ratio, missing audio routing, or an edit at the source clip’s beginning or end.
- What to do: Inspect the output preview and playback on a separate device; verify audio is continuous and adjust the source or scene before broadcasting.
If the broadcast stops after a brief interruption
- Likely cause: Auto-stop or the scheduled-broadcast reconnection behavior may have ended the event when the encoder or source disconnected.
- What to do: Re-test the exact interruption scenario, review the auto-stop choice, and decide whether a manual restart or review is required.
Keep the replay eligible and usable
OBS settings cannot resolve rights or policy problems in the recording. Before streaming, make sure you have permission for the event footage, music, game audio, and any other material in the replay. A technically healthy stream is not a substitute for checking YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. For archive-dependent events, retain the original recording separately rather than treating the live archive as the only copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection running throughout the event, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that loops uploaded videos. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the computer can be off. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
