In OBS Studio, enable Settings → Output → Automatically Reconnect, then set a retry delay and maximum retries. OBS will try to restore its encoder connection if it drops, but that does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same broadcast. After reconnecting, check the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm that the viewer-facing page plays.
Set OBS to reconnect after a disconnect
- Open OBS Settings. In OBS Studio, select Settings, then Output.
- Enable reconnecting. Turn on Automatically Reconnect.
- Set the retry options. Choose a Retry Delay and Maximum Retries appropriate for your stream. OBS documents that the retry interval doubles on successive attempts to avoid overloading streaming services. A maximum of zero disables reconnecting. There is no universal retry count that YouTube recommends for every stream.
- Apply the settings. Select Apply, then OK, and make a test broadcast before relying on the setup unattended.
This is encoder-side recovery: OBS attempts to reconnect its output to YouTube. It cannot by itself guarantee that the existing YouTube broadcast stays live or that viewers see uninterrupted playback.
Check YouTube’s broadcast controls separately
In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and inspect its Auto-start & auto-stop settings. These are separate from OBS’s reconnect option. When YouTube’s options are enabled, starting or stopping the encoder can start or stop the stream. Understand how they are set for your broadcast before depending on an encoder reconnect to restore it.
Confirm that viewers can see and hear the recovered stream
- Wait for OBS to report that it has reconnected.
- Check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and review the stream preview and health.
- Open the public or unlisted watch page and verify that video and audio play. Keep monitoring both after recovery; an encoder message alone does not confirm that the viewer-facing broadcast has resumed.
If OBS does not reconnect or YouTube does not resume
- Encoder cannot start or authenticate: Copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. If the encoder uses account login rather than a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team.
- OBS reconnects, but the broadcast is not live: Check the stream’s status in Live Control Room, its Auto-start & auto-stop settings, and the viewer-facing page. Reconnecting OBS is not the same as confirming YouTube resumed the broadcast.
- Repeated drops: Reconnect helps with temporary interruptions, not a persistent network or encoder problem. Check the encoder and connection, then test a recovery plan before leaving a long broadcast unattended.
For unattended streams, test a backup encoder
A backup encoder is a more involved option than enabling reconnect in OBS: it requires a second encoder setup. YouTube’s failover test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Test your actual setup; do not assume viewers will experience uninterrupted playback just because a backup exists.

Keep a local recording of a long bhajan stream
YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For a long bhajan broadcast, make sure local recording is enabled and that the computer or encoder has enough storage; do not rely on YouTube’s archive alone.
