You can add songs to an encoder-based YouTube livestream without taking the channel offline: keep the encoder connected, prepare the audio source in advance, then start it or switch to it while the encoder continues sending its feed. In OBS, use a Media Source for a supported local audio file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist. The technical steps do not grant music rights, so confirm that your permission covers livestreaming and any replay before you play the tracks.
Prepare the song source before the stream
This walkthrough assumes an encoder such as OBS is already sending a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a continuing connection to the stream URL and key; stopping the encoder feed ends that connection. Keep the encoder running while you add or activate a source. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Open the running OBS project. Find the scene currently being sent to YouTube and decide whether the new song should play in that scene or in a separate prepared scene. Do not stop the encoder feed to insert the source.
- Add the appropriate source. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source for a single local audio file. OBS documents support for audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a queue of files, add a VLC Video source; VLC must be installed. OBS’s source documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so labels and controls may differ in your installed version. See OBS Media Sources and the OBS Sources Guide.
- Choose tracks you are authorized to use. For a VLC playlist, set the order and any loop or shuffle behavior before going live. A track being playable on your computer or available through a consumer music service does not establish livestream rights.
- Test the audio path and transition. Check that the source is audible in the encoder’s output, the existing audio is balanced, and enabling the new source does not mute or double the program audio. YouTube recommends testing and checking the Live Control Room preview before the event. Use a private or unlisted test where suitable. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Start or switch songs while staying live
When ready, leave OBS connected and sending its feed. Start or enable the prepared Media Source, or switch to the scene that contains it. The exact control sequence depends on your scene layout and OBS version; the key is to change the source within the running encoder rather than stopping and restarting the encoder feed. Keep monitoring the stream output and YouTube’s Live Control Room for warnings.
If a copyright warning appears, stop or replace the flagged material promptly. YouTube says that a live stream may show a placeholder and warn the creator to stop third-party content; if the material continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Ended streams under 12 hours are automatically archived through YouTube’s documented encoder workflow, so consider replay rights as well as live playback. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its encoder workflow.

Confirm music rights before playing Indian songs
The workflow solves a continuity problem, not a licensing one. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators represent that they have the rights needed for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
For Indian songs, do not assume that a consumer subscription, a purchased track, credit in the description, or permission from one participant covers every right needed. Confirm that the permission applies to your repertoire, intended territories, livestream use, monetization if relevant, and archived replay. Ask the relevant rights owners or a qualified rights provider whether your channel needs to be added to a Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel; archived streams may also receive Content ID claims. The applicable rights and permissions depend on the material and agreements involved; no specific India-wide licence or blanket permission is established here. See YouTube’s live copyright guidance and its livestream terms.

YouTube’s separate live Content ID matching feature is intended for eligible Content Manager partners with global rights and exclusive ownership. It is not a method for an ordinary streamer to get permission to play someone else’s music. See YouTube’s live Content ID matching guidance.
Choose a single-track source or a playlist
| Option | Best fit | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local audio track or a source you will start individually | Use a supported local audio file, such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV; test its playback and audio routing. |
| OBS VLC Video source | Multiple queued files | Install VLC, create the playlist, and set its order and loop or shuffle behavior before going live. |
Both approaches let you prepare content for the existing scene; neither changes the rights required for the music. OBS documents these source options in its Media Sources page.

Troubleshoot without dropping the encoder feed
- The song does not play: Check that the source points to the intended local file and that the file is in a supported format. For a VLC playlist, confirm VLC is installed and the playlist items are available.
- The stream is silent after switching: Check that the source is enabled in the scene being sent, then inspect the encoder’s audio output and test the transition in preview. Avoid stopping the encoder as a first response.
- The song is too loud, too quiet, or doubled: Check the source and existing program mix in the encoder, then test the output again before making the source live.
- YouTube displays a copyright warning or placeholder: Stop or replace the material and review the Live Control Room warning. If you believe the use is licensed, verify the scope of the permission and whether the rights owner has allowlisted your channel; a licence alone may not prevent Content ID interruption.
- The live stream ends unexpectedly: Check whether the encoder feed was stopped and whether YouTube reported a content warning. Keep a prepared alternate source available if you have rights to use it.
