You can run a YouTube radio stream from an India-based VPS by placing your audio or video files on the server, configuring an encoder such as FFmpeg to send them to YouTube Live, and setting up a supervised process that restarts if it fails. The VPS removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: you still need to configure and monitor the encoder, protect your stream key, plan for failures, and have the rights to broadcast the media.
This guide covers the do-it-yourself VPS setup and the YouTube settings that matter. YouTube’s published guidance is global; it does not establish which India VPS provider or data-center location will give you the best route to YouTube ingest.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The signal path is:
Media file or playlist → encoder process on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers
The VPS supplies an always-available machine and network connection. The encoder reads your media and sends a live feed to YouTube. For a radio-style channel, the source might be audio with a static image, a sequence of visualizers, or video files. A server being online does not by itself keep the stream live: the media must be readable, the encoder must run, and the connection must remain usable.

A looping FFmpeg process is one possible implementation. A secondary VPS tutorial illustrates that general pattern, but it is not official YouTube guidance or a tested guarantee of continuous operation: VPS 24/7 livestream tutorial.
Check YouTube eligibility before renting a server
YouTube requires the channel to be verified, to have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer to be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before you schedule a launch. Check YouTube’s current requirements at live-streaming eligibility and its encoder setup instructions.

Choose a VPS for the actual workload
Do not choose a plan solely because its provider advertises an India location. Compare the provider’s current terms and specifications for sustained outbound transfer, CPU availability, data-transfer allowance, monitoring, recovery options, support, and backups. The available information does not establish an ideal India region, provider, plan, price, or route quality to YouTube ingest.
- Already-encoded files, sent without re-encoding: the server has less encoding work to do than if it must decode, resize, and encode video again. Confirm that the files and chosen streaming format are compatible with the workflow you configure.
- Software re-encoding: the VPS CPU must handle the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate continuously. A plan’s listed CPU allocation is not proof it can sustain your particular workload; test the exact media and settings on the plan you intend to use.
- Network capacity: allow for the chosen video and audio bitrate as continuous outbound traffic. Check the provider’s transfer and throughput terms rather than treating a location label as evidence of usable capacity.
Prepare the channel, live event, and stream key
- Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming. Complete this early because first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm the channel is eligible before continuing.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Use the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Exact controls can change; use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the stream key secret. It lets an encoder send a feed to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public screenshots, shared shell history, public configuration files, or logs. YouTube explains stream keys in its stream key settings guidance.
- Prefer a protected way to supply the key to the encoder. Restrict access to configuration and logs on the server. Do not paste the key into material that other users can read or share.
Choose encoder settings from YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS where available. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval—not over four seconds. Use YouTube’s table for the codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you actually choose: YouTube encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion guidance.

| Example H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Audio guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 128 Kbps recommended for stereo audio |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommended H.264 bitrates, not measured minimum VPS capacities. Other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates have their own guidance in YouTube’s table. Match the encoder to the source and to the VPS you have selected, then test for stable delivery. CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval are encoder settings, not reasons to assume that a server can handle a given workload.
Put the media on the server and keep the encoder running
- Upload or otherwise place the source media on the VPS. Store it somewhere the encoder’s operating-system user can read. For a playlist, make sure every referenced file is present and paths remain valid.
- Configure the encoder to read the media and send it to the YouTube endpoint. Use the stream URL and protected stream key from Live Control Room, select compatible codecs and settings, and configure the intended looping or playlist behavior. The exact command depends on the media, operating system, FFmpeg build, and whether you are copying encoded streams or re-encoding; no universal command can be assumed safe or reliable for every file and VPS.
- Use a service supervisor or equivalent restart strategy. Configure the operating system to start the encoder after a reboot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Check the service’s logs and confirm the recovery behavior instead of assuming that a background process will survive failures.
- Test the whole chain before making the broadcast public. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Check YouTube’s preview for audio, video, and stream-health warnings. Restart the encoder or VPS during the test to verify that your process starts again and that YouTube receives the feed. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health: live-streaming tips.
The steps above describe the deployment pattern, not a provider-specific or operating-system-specific command recipe. Service configuration, file permissions, FFmpeg options, and restart behavior depend on your system; test them against the actual media and server rather than deploying an unverified command unattended.

Plan around long streams, archives, and DVR
A continuous signal and a continuous replay archive are not the same thing. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a separate local recording if preserving the broadcast matters, and consult YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
You can consider shorter scheduled sessions if archive access is important, but the cited YouTube guidance does not require session splitting or promise that it will guarantee an archive. Choose based on whether uninterrupted listening or replay availability matters more to your channel, and test the schedule you intend to use.

Clear music and content rights before going live
Having a file, subscription, or ability to play a track does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the content provider must hold the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights and territory requirements. The applicable license depends on the catalog, use, and territories; this guide cannot determine whether a particular collection is cleared. Read the YouTube live-stream terms and confirm that your permissions cover the intended live broadcast and any replay or archive use.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| You cannot start an encoder stream | Check channel verification, live-stream eligibility, and whether first-time enablement is still processing. Activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm the stream URL and key are the ones shown for the selected Live Control Room stream. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Confirm the encoder process is running, the endpoint and key are correct, and the VPS can make outbound connections. Inspect the encoder and service logs without exposing the key. Prefer RTMPS when available. |
| Stream-health warnings or unstable delivery | Compare actual encoder output with YouTube’s codec, CBR, keyframe, resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate guidance. Check sustained outbound capacity and test the chosen workload from the VPS. |
| Audio is missing, silent, or wrong | Verify that the chosen input file or playlist contains the expected audio track, that the encoder selects it, and that the YouTube preview plays it. Check the audio codec and stereo bitrate guidance. |
| The broadcast stops after a reboot or process failure | Inspect the operating-system supervisor configuration, startup behavior, and logs. Confirm that media paths and permissions remain valid and test a deliberate restart before relying on unattended operation. |
| A long-running stream has no complete archive or rewind | Check the 12-hour archive and DVR caveats. Keep an independent recording if replay matters; shorter sessions are an option to evaluate, not a guarantee of capture. |
